The book does an excellent job of showing the history and influences of dancehall music. It is well written and the attention to detail is worth mentioning and the format of the book is appropriate, with breakdowns of each era of dancehall, from what influenced its inception to when it solidified its place as a genre in the 80s. The author was able to describe the sound system culture that dancehall came from and how reggae, ska, and dancehall music grew from sound systems not having American and British records, and how the sound system culture itself grew from radios not playing the music that citizens were interested in. The book also touches on issues of racism and political conflict without being heavy handed. The pictures spread out throughout the book are great, and do an excellent job of breaking up the text, making the book more enjoyable to read. The articles, and interviews about individual artists and studios are really interesting and are scattered throughout the book and add to the overall idea of the book without having to be part of the actual narrative flow. They add details that flow well with the general theme and are well done. The book overall is very informative and is a very good read, and I will probably be picking it up again.

This book offers great insight into a culture that still remains largely a homegrown experience. Try as we might, there just is no way anyone can ever fully recreate the sheer explosiveness and creativity that emerged from one tiny likkle island in the Caribbean so many years ago; but it sure is fun to keep a dance yard-style. Sure the dancehall 'style' has been adopted on many a foreign soil, and spawned a multi-million dollar industry (Hip-Hop anyone?), but ah no anyone can do it like they do ina Jamdown. Nor can one ever hope to see such photos unless they're from Yard, or know someone who lived in JA during the 80's. This book is just large. If you consider yourself a dancehall fan you would do well to get your hands on a copy of this book, fi real. You'll learn a lot.

Adams' conversational tone is perfect for this amazing true adventure story that spans centuries. In a way, it's better than being there, since I'd just be one of those inconsequential tourists getting the superficial overview instead of the rich, meaty history Adams provides.

Mr. Adams took me on a revisit of not just Machu Picchu, but deep into the Sacred Valley of the Incas along the Urubamba River and Ollantaytambo and beyond. I absolutely loved how he was able to weave Inca history (of which im a longtime student) Into the arduous adventure of his trek along Bingham's footsteps. I have traveled to Peru over a dozen times and have many friends in the Quechua communities in and around Cusco. I got many a chuckle about the idiosyncrasies of these hardy and unique descendants of the Inca. I found myself nodding in agreement with the author and enjoyed the interspersing of historic accounts and different aspects of interpretation of what remains a mystery to this day.Yes, it was a true rediscovery of Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail which I hiked at the age of 62 in 2002, highlight of my adult life. I'm grateful for the many hours of armchair travel the author provided me as chances are that I will not be able to return unless someone volunteers a golden litter and a couple of handsome chasquis!

I got this and 'The Last Days of the Incas' (by Kim MacQuarrie) as reading material leading up to and while traveling in Peru. 'Last Days' is a heavy historical book (I knew it would be) but I thought I would want some historical background on the ruins and sites we were visiting. 'Turn Right' was more fun and included all the relevant highlights on the historical conflict between the two brothers and Spain's 16th c relationship was with the Incas. I ended up leaving 'Last Days' at a hotel before I finished it.Mark's book contained fun tidbits and factoids that I could share with my travel companions. Sometimes I read whole sections out loud to them. Machu Picchu was the last stop on our 2.5-week journey and it was fun to arrive about the same time Mark did at the end of his book.

Adams, an editor for a travel/adventure magazine, realized that despite his profession he had never been on a proper adventure of his own. For his first endeavor, he chooses to follow in the footsteps of Hiram Bingham, the American explorer often credited with the discovery of Peru’s “lost city” of Machu Picchu.Bingham, who originally received a lot of accolades for his discovery, later became a highly controversial figure. To this day, in fact, arguments about his accomplishments and practices are still taking place, particularly regarding the artifacts that he collected (stole? borrowed?) and took to the United States. There are those who maintain that Machu Picchu was never lost at all; that Bingham merely happened to be the first outsider to come across it. Regardless of whether he truly discovered Machu Picchu or simply became its publicist, Bingham is undoubtedly responsible for worldwide awareness of and interest in the mountain city. Every once in a long while I read a book that's so good I feel I have to write a review. This is one of them. My family and I went to Machu Picchu just a few weeks before I read this, and so of course some of the places mentioned were especially personal, but overall I learned SO MUCH about Hiram Bingham and the "discovery" of Machu Picchu through this book. The author combines history with his own story and personal relationships and I just found his style very enjoyable and educational. I heartily recommend this book if you have any interest in Machu Picchu, Peru, or Indiana Jones. : ) Great book...I was sad when it was over.

My brother and his wife went to Machu Picchu recently; I probably won't ever make it there. I'm looking forward to their first-hand accounts and now that I've read this book I will have more than a vague idea of what they are talking about.I'm not going to regurgitate what other reviewers have said about the author's fun yet informative writing style and how easy it is to understand the historical facts.I loved the cover page artwork, but what REALLY helped me follow the story were the 16 pages of black-and-white photographs, including some dating back to 1911. The 45 photos added immensely to the narrative.If you like reading adventure travel stories, are attracted to South American (and Inca) history, and want to be entertained while you are being educated, you will probably enjoy this book.Now, off to see if Mark Adams has written any other books!

I don't know how it could have been any more perfect. Mr. Adams who writes with a sense of humor and a love of history juxtaposes his grueling trips to Machu Picchu with the trips of explorer, Hiram Bingham who has been given credit for discovering Machu Picchu one hundred years ago. It's not just about the history of the discovery, but also about the events that sourrounded Hiram Bingham for years. An abbreviated biography.Mr. Adams hired a great guide, John, who knew all the right people to hire. John is an interesting and funny man and Mr. Adams describes him so well that I didn't have to see the pictures to know what he looked like.I enjoyed this book completely and would love to make plans to go to Machu Picchu as soon as possible. This book has made me appreciate it so much more than I would have without it.

They didn’t want to risk anything by having a relationship.Poppy thought at one point that she couldn’t have anything with Zach but he was adamant about having a relationship with her. Then they couldn’t hold back any longer. Zach handled Poppy secret soooooo well that I’ve chosen him Book boyfriend of the year. He was the sweetest.And to add more fun to this?! Zach mom was off the chain hilarious and Poppy friends were a close second. Her parents were also really supportive. I love this book!!!

I had so much fun reading xo, Zach; it was sweet, a little angsty, and a nice light book to fill an afternoon. It was a good way for me to break up a long string of books that dealt with some pretty heavy themes; a palate cleanser, if you will. I always count on Kendall Ryan’s books to deliver on witty banter and enough levity to ensure her books leave me feeling happy.xo, Zach is a standalone novel. It is told in dual first-person perspective, by Poppy and Zach.I loved that Poppy and Zach’s love for writing and literature played such a large part in this book. As literary junky, it was wonderful to see a couple brought together, in part, due to their love of words. It was especially lovely to see Zach use his art not only to help win over Poppy but to help others perfect their art to ensure their futures.xo, Zach was in the grey area between socially acceptable and taboo, it was that aspect of the book that made it so fascinating. The ambiguity provided by their not-quite-student-teacher relationship provided an intriguing dynamic while they were trying to figure out what they were and what would happen if they decided to pursue the feelings developing between them.My wish for xo, Zach would be to have more of Poppy and Zach’s writing included in the text. Much was made of his poems to her and he often spoke of how amazing Poppy’s writing was, but we saw very few examples of either.Kendall Ryan books are always enjoyable for me. Whether she’s writing a dramatic piece involving difficult topics or a light piece with people just trying to find their happily ever after, she always delivers characters I can identify with – in some way – and entertaining storylines. I had a wonderful time reading this book and can’t wait to see what else Ms. Ryan has in store for her readers in 2018.

I was a little apprehensive honestly in the beginning. She just seemed so wishy washy about everything, but I'm glad I stuck to it! I love the consept of the single young mother, not your template boy meets girl. The dynamic between the two is real, I wish there was more of Connor, her son in it would be my only draw back. He is such a big part of her life that I feel should have had a bigger part of the story. I didn't feel him like I should have. Just throwing that out there, hopefully maybe miss Ryan will see that and throw us another feel good story our way. Looking forward to Baby Daddy coming out next!

xo, Zach is a very cute story about an adviser and his student in college. The two meet previously one night before finding out they would be paired up at school. So it comes as a shock to them both when they have their first meeting at school. Now how awkward is it, VERY! Zach is very into Poppy, and Poppy is too, but she is more reserved about it. Then add the situation, that they are adviser and student, and its probably not allowed in the school policy. So this has Poppy a bit freaked out. She keeps turning down Zach, but their is only so much she can take. Zach does not give up easily.The push and pull from these two, is so thick, you can slice it with a knife. They both petty much can't stop thinking (dreaming) about each other, and the more days pass, the stronger the connection. And when Zach starts fighting with poems, how does a girl resist that. This story along with the fun illustrations was captivating to my toddler after a trip to the natural history museum and aquarium in which he saw real scuba divers getting into the water. For weeks afterwards he was dressing up as a scuba diver and sliding around on the floor. The story is somewhat detailed for a tot but he still got a lot out of parts of the story and the illustrations.

Wonderful story and beautiful illustrations. My students loved it.

I got this book for my kid, who love all things ocean. They really enjoy the book. It tells the story simply with beautiful pictures.

Wonderful gift for my 5 year old grandnephew. He loves nature, inventing new or modifying existing objects. Since he was around 3 he identified needs or wants and figured out what to do so he had what he wanted. He is a true problem solver and innovator. We love reading this book over and over. Doing so reinforces his creative process and problem solving skills. Cannot thank you enough!

This hardcover book is a nice story but it is a little confused if it wants to be a small child's book or an older child's book. It appears to be a nice picture book and starts off at one level but then gets technical. I liked it because it is a true story and I like Jacques Cousteau.

We've accumulated quite an extensive storybook library at our house, and this was a fast favorite. The illustrations are beautiful - imaginative and colorful, definitely plenty to keep our five month old engaged. And the story is a substantial enough one (I even learned a fair amount about Jacques Cousteau from reading it) that I imagine we'll keep this one around for a long time, with our son growing into it.

Dinosaurs are such a part of the cultural mainstream that most people, I would imagine, don't even realize how speculative our depictions of even "well known" varieties are. I had some inkling: as a kid, I lost interest in studying dinosaurs when the news came out that Brontosaurus was being renamed Apatasaurus (going off memory, but I think that's the phonetic name, if not exactly the spelling) because the all-knowing scientists I idolized had put the wrong skull on the Brontosaurus skeleton. As a WAY too serious kid determined to know what was "real" and what wasn't, I reasoned that if we couldn't even be sure that one of the most famous dinos was "real", then it was possible nearly everything I knew about dinos might turn out to be bunk one day.If my defeatist reaction was juvenile my skepticism was richly warranted, as this book illustrates in a thought-provoking and often hilarious way. It provides alternative reconstructions of extinct creatures--many but not all being dinosaurs--that are at least as plausible as the stereotypical portrayals of muscular lizards trying to chomp, or avoid being chomped, that we're all familiar with.In many cases the depictions are actually much more plausible, which was my favorite feature of the book. Dinos are good for business, and Dinos!...in ACTION! are better yet, to the point that it's difficult to imagine them rolling happily in the mud like a pig, or without colorful scales and menacing claws, because nearly all depictions of them focus on the flamboyant, the bizarre, and of course, the ACTION!, no matter how speculative. But they were animals, and so surely they looked and behaved more like animals today than we usually imagine they did.Or maybe not. But again, the alternative depictions in this book are at least as plausible and usually more so; and the text gives solidly scientific justifications without getting too dense or detailed. Equally enjoyable was the second part of the book, illustrations how modern animals might be reconstructed by paleontologists far in the future, based upon the parts of the animals' bodies likely to be be preserved and potentially dug up as fossils. It's funny and a bit unsettling, and I'll say no more to avoid spoiling anything.I really enjoyed this book, which is part of why I gave it four and not five stars: even at the reasonable price of $8-10, I want a book to have more than 30 or 40 minutes material in it. Yes, I understand that the illustrations are the focus but I wanted to see more of those, even if it meant not all could be as well done artistically, or that some had to have abbreviated text accompanying them. Other people, perhaps, will find the amount of material satisfactory, but like the carnivorous dinos depicted in most pictures, books, movies, etc., all I do is consume and I'm never satisfied...

I got this for my dinosaur-loving roommate. I read it and love it so much I want a copy for my library too.It's alternate views of the soft tissue and behaviors that point out the traditional ways we've depicted dinosaurs are just traditional and not necessarily accurate. Then it ends with current-animals reconstructed by a hypothetical future scientist after we're all extinct, showing the types of errors that are probably common in our dino-reconstructions applied to animals we know.Good pictures, interesting text explaining the limitations of current science in how these & more-traditional-dino-art are based on facts but also, by necessity, contain some educated-guesswork.

This book gives a brief overview of the history of dinosaur reconstruction in art, pointing out early mistakes, tired cliches, and the importance of being aware that there is still so much we don't know.It also brings up a good point (at least I wasn't the only one who noticed): "Palaeoart" already is the term for art created in prehistoric times; the creation of prehistoric scenes should note properly be termed "palaeography".My only negative criticism would be that this book is too short and could use more illustrations. However, one runs into copyright problems that way, so it's understandable.

I got this book for myself as an adult who still has a passing interest in dinosaurs. The illustrations are very well done and the explanations really make you think about how paleontology has changed over the years. I think it can be appreciated by people of all ages, although heads up if you're going to give this to a younger kid, there's a section in it that discusses (and illustrates) dinosaur reproduction so if they haven't thought about that process much you might end up needing to answer questions. I also noticed the book had a few typos (in normal words, not the scientific parts as far as I could tell) but it doesn't detract from the readability.

A thoughtful book that puts the meat on the bones of dinosaurs. There are myriad beautiful and sometimes whimsical, or even amusing, paintings and drawings of dinosaurs going about their daily life... a life that includes much more than chasing prey or being chased. The last segment of the book explores how contemporary creatures might be reconstructed if aliens from the future tackled them with all the same tools and information we have as we reconstruct dinosaurs. Overall, a very charming, beautiful, interesting little book.Other than wishing it were longer, I only have one real qualm with this book- many of the wonderful illustrations bridge across the whole spread, and since the book is perfect bound, that means a lot of detail and information is lost in the binding. I almost wish the book was coil bound so it would lay flat, because now I'm torn between protecting the spine and trying not to let it bother me, or crushing each spread flat to see the art but ultimately more or less destroying the book.
