A handy sized, informative guide to rivers in our area. We have used this to plan numerous trips on rivers and have found the guide to be (relatively) accurate and easy to use. Having said that, we discovered (duh!) that rivers change over time and that this guide is a great STARTING point for trip planning. Good scouting and maybe talking to people with experience on the river in question are valuable parts of good trip prep. There is a website for the book where people can submit changes or inaccuracies that they have discovered - this helps to keep the guide current. All in all one of the best we've looked at.

Purchased this book so my wife and I could do some canoeing in Connecticut. The book is pretty good. Some of the rivers they mention are not deep enough in the rainy season to float a boat. One example is the river in Devils Hopyard. The book lists it as a deep enough river to paddle on. I hike there all the time. It has never been deep enough for a trip on the river. To shallow, and narrow.

If you are going to canoe in Maine, this book is a good starting point to orient yourself.

Required reading for those with boats in or visiting Maine. Thank you AMC.

A ton of great info to have if there are rivers you have been thinking about exploring but werent sure if it was worth the drive. I bought it just for 2 rivers, nad now am hoping to check out 2 other ones this summer. A kind of guide you can browse through and get ideas from.

How he managed to not get caught has as much to do with luck, as it does with skill. By all accounts, William Queen should be dead,Although his undercover work did result in the breakup of one of the worst motorcycle gangs in existence, it unfortunately also took a toll on his marriage and family. This guy stared death in the face every single day for a very long time, yet somehow survived.If you like suspenseful nonfiction, than this is the book for you. You'll find it hard to believe that Queen survived some of the no win situations that he found himself in. This is a 5 star thriller!

I recently watched the television movie about William Queen's story of his undercover life as Billy St. John, the member in good standing with the Mongol M.C.I bought the book to see if anything was better/worse than the TV movie and surprisingly, they are both terrific examples of the sordid yet loving atmosphere of the brotherhood. I recommend this book with 5 stars to anyone with the curiosity to learn how the true 1# lives their lives. It's gut-wrenching, ugly truths run side by side with the love these brothers have for one another and the struggle of Billy vs William and how it wrecked his true family at the same time wrecking his M.C. family. An honest,gritty view of the importance of the police force and the tough demands it makes of its best members.Read this. You won't be disappointed!

To start off with, people who rode in MC's or are a fan of the biker community are probably gonna call this guy a snitch or a rat ATF federally. Frankly I dont care I like this guy, he is telling it like it is. The stories he tells in this book are 100% accurate and can be confirmed. This reviewer lives in Ventura County, California where the Hells Angeles have done some long term damage to my town. Ventura County is mentioned often in this book, Southern California specially the Inland Empire has been the hub for such big name MC's such as the Vagos, the HA's and yes the Mongols. When Billy St. John as he called in this book infiltrated this organization he certainly did many So Cal residents a favor, as they were causing significant havoc in the region.If I'am not mistaken I saw a program on the National Geographic Channel with Bill Queen further going into detail as the events of this book. A lot of this material was used in Kerrie Droban's Vagos, Mongols, Outlaws and was also used in Gangland Undercover.As far as the book is concerned it is probably one of the most interesting pieces of literature I have read in the past decade. Which is saying much since this book is starting to become dated but will ultimately have some importance in the years to come as we as a nation face some challenges. Bill Queen has certainly led an amazing life serving this nation in Vietnam, the mid west apprehending white supremacist organizations. and even the Mongols MC. An absolute page-turner. This is a story of criminal motorcycle gangs and how they operate. It's no surprise that their members are mired in all kinds of criminal activity, ruthless, and capable of unspeakable acts. The surprising parts are the high degree of organization of the gangs (officers, by-laws, the whole bit), and the camaraderie and loyalty among gang members who otherwise aren't really nice people. Queen's ability not only to infiltrate one of these gangs, but to rise to a high level position, is more than impressive. He had to repeatedly find ways to avoid taking drugs and committing various crimes without arousing suspicion, maintain a charade in the face of a gang who was borderline paranoid about being infiltrated by cops, rely on the ATF to set up a fake identity that would fool the gang, and give up nearly all semblance of any normal life outside of his undercover assignment. Trust me, you will enjoy this story.

This is, I believe, the best book that I have read about outlaw motorcycle clubs, and I have read many. William Queen was an ATF agent who infiltrated the vicious Mongol Motorcycle Club by becoming a full-patched Mongol. This is no mean feat, as the book very carefully and accurately explains. No other book I have read does a comparable job to this book in taking the reader inside one of these clubs (and the Mongols are arguably the worst of the group) and showing what this strange world is really all about.The author reveals that the Mongol M/C is, or at least was in the early 2000s, at its heart a criminal enterprise. According to the author the Mongol life made an orderly work life unlikely, and only a few members of the authors' chapter held regular jobs. Barfights and drugs were the order of the day.Reading this book the reader gains an appreciation for the frightful strain that an undercover agent must undergo. The author was always in danger of summary execution by the Mongols, should they discover his activities. And the ATF itself appeared unappreciative of his sacrifices, as he became isolated from the internal politics of the ATF and perhaps largely forgotten by his peers.Overall, this one is well worth reading. RJB.

The book does an excellent job of showing the history and influences of dancehall music. It is well written and the attention to detail is worth mentioning and the format of the book is appropriate, with breakdowns of each era of dancehall, from what influenced its inception to when it solidified its place as a genre in the 80s. The author was able to describe the sound system culture that dancehall came from and how reggae, ska, and dancehall music grew from sound systems not having American and British records, and how the sound system culture itself grew from radios not playing the music that citizens were interested in. The book also touches on issues of racism and political conflict without being heavy handed. The pictures spread out throughout the book are great, and do an excellent job of breaking up the text, making the book more enjoyable to read. The articles, and interviews about individual artists and studios are really interesting and are scattered throughout the book and add to the overall idea of the book without having to be part of the actual narrative flow. They add details that flow well with the general theme and are well done. The book overall is very informative and is a very good read, and I will probably be picking it up again.

Nor can one ever hope to see such photos unless they're from Yard, or know someone who lived in JA during the 80's. This book is just large. Adams' conversational tone is perfect for this amazing true adventure story that spans centuries. In a way, it's better than being there, since I'd just be one of those inconsequential tourists getting the superficial overview instead of the rich, meaty history Adams provides.

Mr. Adams took me on a revisit of not just Machu Picchu, but deep into the Sacred Valley of the Incas along the Urubamba River and Ollantaytambo and beyond. I absolutely loved how he was able to weave Inca history (of which im a longtime student) Into the arduous adventure of his trek along Bingham's footsteps. I have traveled to Peru over a dozen times and have many friends in the Quechua communities in and around Cusco. I got many a chuckle about the idiosyncrasies of these hardy and unique descendants of the Inca. I found myself nodding in agreement with the author and enjoyed the interspersing of historic accounts and different aspects of interpretation of what remains a mystery to this day.Yes, it was a true rediscovery of Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail which I hiked at the age of 62 in 2002, highlight of my adult life. I'm grateful for the many hours of armchair travel the author provided me as chances are that I will not be able to return unless someone volunteers a golden litter and a couple of handsome chasquis!

I got this and 'The Last Days of the Incas' (by Kim MacQuarrie) as reading material leading up to and while traveling in Peru. 'Last Days' is a heavy historical book (I knew it would be) but I thought I would want some historical background on the ruins and sites we were visiting. 'Turn Right' was more fun and included all the relevant highlights on the historical conflict between the two brothers and Spain's 16th c relationship was with the Incas. I ended up leaving 'Last Days' at a hotel before I finished it.Mark's book contained fun tidbits and factoids that I could share with my travel companions. Sometimes I read whole sections out loud to them. Machu Picchu was the last stop on our 2.5-week journey and it was fun to arrive about the same time Mark did at the end of his book.

Adams, an editor for a travel/adventure magazine, realized that despite his profession he had never been on a proper adventure of his own. For his first endeavor, he chooses to follow in the footsteps of Hiram Bingham, the American explorer often credited with the discovery of Peru’s “lost city” of Machu Picchu.Bingham, who originally received a lot of accolades for his discovery, later became a highly controversial figure. To this day, in fact, arguments about his accomplishments and practices are still taking place, particularly regarding the artifacts that he collected (stole? borrowed?) and took to the United States. There are those who maintain that Machu Picchu was never lost at all; that Bingham merely happened to be the first outsider to come across it. Regardless of whether he truly discovered Machu Picchu or simply became its publicist, Bingham is undoubtedly responsible for worldwide awareness of and interest in the mountain city. Every once in a long while I read a book that's so good I feel I have to write a review. This is one of them. My family and I went to Machu Picchu just a few weeks before I read this, and so of course some of the places mentioned were especially personal, but overall I learned SO MUCH about Hiram Bingham and the "discovery" of Machu Picchu through this book. The author combines history with his own story and personal relationships and I just found his style very enjoyable and educational. I heartily recommend this book if you have any interest in Machu Picchu, Peru, or Indiana Jones. : ) Great book...I was sad when it was over.

My brother and his wife went to Machu Picchu recently; I probably won't ever make it there. I'm looking forward to their first-hand accounts and now that I've read this book I will have more than a vague idea of what they are talking about.I'm not going to regurgitate what other reviewers have said about the author's fun yet informative writing style and how easy it is to understand the historical facts.I loved the cover page artwork, but what REALLY helped me follow the story were the 16 pages of black-and-white photographs, including some dating back to 1911. The 45 photos added immensely to the narrative.If you like reading adventure travel stories, are attracted to South American (and Inca) history, and want to be entertained while you are being educated, you will probably enjoy this book.Now, off to see if Mark Adams has written any other books!

I don't know how it could have been any more perfect. Mr. Adams who writes with a sense of humor and a love of history juxtaposes his grueling trips to Machu Picchu with the trips of explorer, Hiram Bingham who has been given credit for discovering Machu Picchu one hundred years ago. It's not just about the history of the discovery, but also about the events that sourrounded Hiram Bingham for years. An abbreviated biography.Mr. Adams hired a great guide, John, who knew all the right people to hire. John is an interesting and funny man and Mr. Adams describes him so well that I didn't have to see the pictures to know what he looked like.I enjoyed this book completely and would love to make plans to go to Machu Picchu as soon as possible. This book has made me appreciate it so much more than I would have without it.

And he’s her advisor in her masters degree program. These two start a friendship even though they are completely attracted to each other. They didn’t want to risk anything by having a relationship.Poppy thought at one point that she couldn’t have anything with Zach but he was adamant about having a relationship with her. Then they couldn’t hold back any longer. Zach handled Poppy secret soooooo well that I’ve chosen him Book boyfriend of the year. He was the sweetest.And to add more fun to this?! Zach mom was off the chain hilarious and Poppy friends were a close second. Her parents were also really supportive. I love this book!!!

I had so much fun reading xo, Zach; it was sweet, a little angsty, and a nice light book to fill an afternoon. It was a good way for me to break up a long string of books that dealt with some pretty heavy themes; a palate cleanser, if you will. I always count on Kendall Ryan’s books to deliver on witty banter and enough levity to ensure her books leave me feeling happy.xo, Zach is a standalone novel. It is told in dual first-person perspective, by Poppy and Zach.I loved that Poppy and Zach’s love for writing and literature played such a large part in this book. As literary junky, it was wonderful to see a couple brought together, in part, due to their love of words. It was especially lovely to see Zach use his art not only to help win over Poppy but to help others perfect their art to ensure their futures.xo, Zach was in the grey area between socially acceptable and taboo, it was that aspect of the book that made it so fascinating. The ambiguity provided by their not-quite-student-teacher relationship provided an intriguing dynamic while they were trying to figure out what they were and what would happen if they decided to pursue the feelings developing between them.My wish for xo, Zach would be to have more of Poppy and Zach’s writing included in the text. Much was made of his poems to her and he often spoke of how amazing Poppy’s writing was, but we saw very few examples of either.Kendall Ryan books are always enjoyable for me. Whether she’s writing a dramatic piece involving difficult topics or a light piece with people just trying to find their happily ever after, she always delivers characters I can identify with – in some way – and entertaining storylines. I had a wonderful time reading this book and can’t wait to see what else Ms. Ryan has in store for her readers in 2018.

I was a little apprehensive honestly in the beginning. She just seemed so wishy washy about everything, but I'm glad I stuck to it! I love the consept of the single young mother, not your template boy meets girl. The dynamic between the two is real, I wish there was more of Connor, her son in it would be my only draw back. He is such a big part of her life that I feel should have had a bigger part of the story. I didn't feel him like I should have. Just throwing that out there, hopefully maybe miss Ryan will see that and throw us another feel good story our way. Looking forward to Baby Daddy coming out next!

xo, Zach is a very cute story about an adviser and his student in college. The two meet previously one night before finding out they would be paired up at school. So it comes as a shock to them both when they have their first meeting at school. Now how awkward is it, VERY! Zach is very into Poppy, and Poppy is too, but she is more reserved about it. Then add the situation, that they are adviser and student, and its probably not allowed in the school policy. So this has Poppy a bit freaked out. She keeps turning down Zach, but their is only so much she can take. Zach does not give up easily.The push and pull from these two, is so thick, you can slice it with a knife. They both petty much can't stop thinking (dreaming) about each other, and the more days pass, the stronger the connection. And when Zach starts fighting with poems, how does a girl resist that. Poppy was a goner! Yes, you read that right, he started writing her poems and she could not resit a man, that could write such beautiful words.So after the push and pull, they finally give in. Well, I should say, Poppy does. Zach was giving up already and about to move on. Poppy finally came to her senses, and gave it a shot. Zach wasn't prepared for Poppy's big surprise. How did he take it? Guess you'll have to find out and read the book to know.This book is another great one by Kendall Ryan. I love all her stories. She doesn't fail at giving us guys we can't help failing for. This story is cute and a fast read. If you love HEA, then grab xo, Zach today. Forgot to mention, how much I love that title. - Yara
