These stories are TOO simple for my liking. Classic stories like "Daniel And The Lion's Den" are simplified even further, referring to the lion's den as "the lion place." The story of the birth of Jesus completely skips the Holy Family's journey to Bethlehem and being directed to the inn's stable. "Sin" is renamed "badness" and the final page assures children that Jesus came to take away their "badness" too -- but the intellectual age this is written for are unlikely to have reached the "age of reason," in which they are even capable of sin. (To top it off, as a parent, I really don't like "badness" as a synonym for "sin." To me, "badness" implies a negative characteristic that the child possesses, rather than a incorrect action that the child chose to do.) I gave it two stars, rather than one, because I do like the quality of the binding.I am returning this book.

Wow i was so skeptical at first about this book when i first heard about it i ended up getting it used. Now i am buying ALL of them and brand new. Just such lovely simple stories for children to understand. I highly recommend it to all parents. My toddler really understood the stories.

The Read Aloud Bible Story series is amazing. If you are a parent or a Bible class teacher, you need to get this set. You will not regret it, it is worth every penny you spend. My daughter is now 24 years old, so I have used these books for over 20 years. They are still in good condition and you never tire of the stories. You can tell that the author is a person who has told Bible stories to young children for years. Very Biblical, but simplified for children to understand. The artwork to go along with the stories is wonderful, very creative way of showing the story and the impact of what happened in the story. Perfect for preschoolers, but even elementary aged children will be engaged with a wonderfully told story.

Book reads so beautifully and artwork is gorgeous! My 3 yr old loves this and I love that she is learning about Jesus through these Bible stories. It is written in a way that is catchy and fun to read out loud. I was worried it would be too juvenile since there are so few words on a page but the large images coupled with the carefully chosen words really make kids (and me!) think/reflect. Highly recommend!!

Good book, not as many stories as I would have liked but I guess that why there is 3 volumes. The language is great for 3 year olds and the pictures are good. The stories may be a little short but that depends on the child. Good book overall and we are planning on purchasing the others as well soon.

These Bible stories are the best children's Bibles Stories I have found. The pictures are clear and the writing is concise and easy for children to grasp. There is great emotion expressed in this book regarding the love of Jesus toward people. It is a wonderful book that children actually like reading. I have read it to my children and now grandchildren. Other children's bible books are too long or if they are short stories they leave out important points. This book has all the right components. If you really want your children to understand God and Jesus's love for them THIS IS THE BOOK.

I wanted to expose my 4yo grandson to the stories I grew up with knowing he was not being raised the way I was and my children were. So I bought this book along with several other books that were my daughters favorite at that age. When I ask him if he liked his books and if his mommy was reading to him. He said yes he got them, yes his mommy was reading to him. I said well do you like them? He said yes especially the one about the Bible.

I read these to my kids, and loved them so much that now I give them as shower gifts. These Bible stories are told in such vivid language with art work that draws kids in! I cant praise the entire series enough - different than other Bible Stories - and really capture young children! I've bought and given many sets of these! All of them are terrific!

I was almost put off by the cover art (since posting this review new cover art has appeared). Also, the modern sounding title that reminded me of the 1990 Alan Rickman film & the 1997 Savage Garden song "Truly, Madly, Deeply" rather than a 19th century love story; however, there I was without any other offering of a P&P variation to read, so I downloaded a sample & then happily purchased the whole book. This was the second story by this particular author that I have read & I was quite wary about trying another but to my surprise I found I liked it much better than her other effort (Becoming Mr Darcy).This was a quite bright & scintillating tale with a plot full of romantic entanglements that needed to be straightened out. While the book followed many of the events of canon there were enough changes, including a new central character, to make it an interesting & exciting novel. The author's extensive vocabulary was used to great effect to bring the story vibrantly alive, although she did use numerous & sometimes extensive sections of dialog verbatim from Austen's original work which was not necessary as her own wiitticisms were excellent. A masquerade ball was a key plot device & explained the peculiar picture on the front cover. The story was told principally from the point-of-view of four main romantic protagonists (ie. Elizabeth & Darcy, Jane & Bingley) while the usual cast of P&P stalwarts appeared in the storyline as required. Overall, this was a very good book that I am happy to recommend.

Although it isn’t totally love at first sight, it is close enough to explain the instant attraction Bingley and Jane and Darcy and Elizabeth feel in the early chapters of this engaging variation. I enjoyed many of the unexpected twists this book took and the happy endings for ODC, Jane and Bingley, and Lydia. I may even read this book a second time! I suggest you read it at least once ;)

A story of musical chairs in that the couples keep switching partners. Fast moving with all the best villains. Hope the Colonel does not end up with “Pocahontas.”

Fair Trade by Kate Bedlow ranks as one of my favorite variations, thus, I was glad to see she had published a new P and P tale. Sorry to say, I was quite disappointed. IMO, the masked ball mix up, between Lydia, Bingley, and Jane and the surprising fate of Wickham, Lydia, and Carter are the only original points of interest. Not caring to keep it in my library, I am returning for refund.

4.5 rounded up to 5 starsI don't know exactly why, but Regency books that incorporate a masquerade into the plot always get my attention. I love my Pride and Prejudice variations, but there aren't many that find a way to use a masquerade in the story. Happily, this is one of them! It's a bit of a stretch, but it sets up the rest of the story really well.Thanks to Aunt and Uncle Gardiner, Jane and Elizabeth are able to attend a very high society masked ball. I love Jane's character here. She has crippling shyness explained by the fact that her beauty and well-shaped figure cause uncomfortable ogling from men all the time. Wearing a mask that hides her face makes her feel a little braver than usual, and she and Charles Bingley make an instant connection. When they exchange names, having been channeling her little sister's personality for inspiration, Jane impulsively says she is Lydia. Elizabeth and Darcy also see each other in passing. Unfortunately, both groups must leave the ball sooner than they would like, and these potential relationships are left behind.Except that Bingley and Darcy show up in Hertfordshire, and Bingley becomes convinced that Lydia Bennet is the girl he met at the masquerade. Darcy has been lecturing him about his tendency to fall in and out of love too easily, so when he finds himself starting to feel more attracted to Lydia's sister Jane, Bingley stubbornly resists changing allegiance. Lydia is enjoying all the attention from Bingley but also from all the new militia officers in the area. Darcy, meanwhile, finds Elizabeth extremely appealing and, as usual, resists because of her family's low connections and horrible behavior.I enjoy the way Ms. Bedlow shifts the important events of canon, including the order that things happen. It's Lydia who goes to Netherfield with her mother's expectation that a rainstorm will keep her there overnight, but things don't play out that way. Captain Carter's character is expanded so he's a significant part of the story. It turns out he's extremely handsome but equally narcissistic. At Rosings, Anne de Bourgh drops a major bombshell on Darcy that I thought was inspired. The Wickham-and-Lydia elopement has a wonderfully satisfying resolution. (I wish more JAFF would deal with Wickham like this!) The Netherfield ball doesn't occur until the end of the book with the story's delightful climax.I'm surprised at the 2-star reviews here on Amazon. I found the writing engaging and the plot well-executed. The Elizabeth-and-Darcy and Jane-and-Bingley romances are well done, too, with all the principals fighting the gut instincts pulling them to the correct partner. It may stretch credulity a bit too far at times, but I didn't ever feel annoyed with that. I highly recommend it.

Everything I could ask for in a Historical Romance and more!The Good: Being so character driven of course I have to list Lillian and Marcus as being the "Good" in this book. Their banter is delightful. Lisa Kleypas certainly knows how to do entertaining dialogue. I love that both Lillian and Marcus profess their complete dislike of each other throughout the book yet find their amazing chemistry at odds with their brains. There is a scene at towards the beginning where 3 of the Wallflowers go to the wishing well to wish Marcus a wife. Well, in 2 of their cases they wished for a wife/love of his life but in Lillian's case, after decided that he is infuriating, wishes a woman for him that'll bring him to his knees. I love her. I love him. I love them.The ended was pretty amazeballs and after our hero rescued our heroine from the dastardly villain one can't help but wonder how Kleypas could possibly turn that villain into a hero. Not the first time she's done that but it amazes me each and every time. I guess I'll have to read the next book to find out how she does it.The Bad: I got nothing. Nada. Zilch. I loved this book and everything about it.In a Nutshell: Another wonderful book by Lisa Kleypas. Another great installment of the Wallflower series. Another book to put on my Keeper shelf. I'll keep this book and read it again some day when I'm in a funk and can't find my way out. It's that good.

I loved this book and was reading it compulsively right up to the part where the hero chose to have sex with the heroine for the first time (and of course it was her very first time) when she was drunk and he was not. So when she woke up she was a little unclear what had happened, and he was all dressed and she was still naked. I can't get over the ick factor even though I otherwise liked the book, so I'm not sure how I should rate it...

Book 2 of the Wallflower series was so delightful. I read the first three out of order, but so far this book is my favorite one in the series. Lillian Bowman took an instant dislike to Marcus, Lord Westcliff, London's most eligible aristocrat from day one. They constantly display their dislike and intolerance for each other throughout this book and the first book. But some sort of spark and chemistry (which Lillian insists is a magical perfume) keeps bringing them together. Lillian and Marcus are two stubborn, and pigheaded people. For this era, it is unusual for a woman to speak her mind and do whatever she wants no matter what. But Lillian is way ahead of her time and continually goes to prove the independent woman she is and always will be. Her parents are worried she will never find an aristocratic husband. The saying is, opposites attract. Lillian reminded me so much of myself that I couldn't help but adore her. I found myself chuckling at Lillian's antics and could actually visualize Marcus shaking his head and rolling his eyes at her. More than 5 stars!!

Excellent, superb story, I am reading ALL of her books. There are so many exceptional reviews for all the bools I can scarcely improve upon them. I will say that I am most impressed with the unique plots of all the books so far. That must be that hardest part of writing a romance novel, yet they are always engaging and each SO different?! AND, the other thing I find quite different is that the HERO is as well defined as the heroine. I hate to stop reading these, but we do have to get back to our real life!But, an issue for you to watch on all Kindle books...just noticed that 2 days ago I paid 7.99 (equals the print price). Today Kindle price is 3.99? What gives ? Is this a sale I missed? When I bought the book, it was noted that publisher sets the price. Buyer Beware.Added post 6/11/15: Amazon reports that publisher dropped those prices, and that they continue to drop Kindle fees for books.This author is certainly WORTH the price, but if you are reading a lot, it does add up. And, to see a book you just bought dop $6 is a bit of a surprise.Amazon replied to this review and gave me a 15$ promotional credit, which I will of course I will apply to this author's fine work.I will leave the "Buyer Beware" tag with the 5 star rating as it may induce others to read it, and purchase these superbly written books. I also hope it will help you with your Kindle purchases.

The writing itself wasn't bad, but the "hero" is terrible. The first few times he kisses/gropes the h, she tells him no several times and pushes him away, but he ignores her and only stops because he doesn't want to get caught. At one point he is stone-cold sober and finds her stupidly drunk, I mean drunk enough that she gets her finger stuck in a bottle and thinks she's dreaming. So what does the H do? He takes her up to his room and has sex with her. That's called rape. He also chokes his mother and threatens to kill her. Sure, she's a horrible person, but you still don't go around strangling frail old women.

Much like Mark Felt's advice to Woodward and Bernstein to "follow the money," Mark Kurlansky follows the salt wherever it may lead. "Salt: A World History" is truly global in its scope, traveling from ancient China and Egypt to Morton Salt, often jumping between geographically disparate regions to follow the themes of salt mining, salt as a food preservative, and modern understandings of salt. At first, these leaps may jar the reader, but the larger themes are easily apparent and the internal logic holds true.Kurlansky appears to have left no possible source unmentioned and his work touches on politics, religion, language, food, technology, trade, travel, and every other topic remotely related to salt. His book could easily serve as a world history primer for those who have never pursued an academic interest in history while simultaneously offering new insights to academic historians. In his introduction, Kurlansky writes, "The search for love and the search for wealth are always the two best stories. But while a love story is timeless, the story of a quest for wealth, given enough time, will always seem like the vain pursuit of a mirage" (p. 13). Though there are no longer wars to control salt, Kurlansky so thoroughly demonstrates its importance both throughout history and in modern times, that readers could never view the various quests for salt as pursuits of a mirage.

One of my neices in college recommeded this book. I've read it twice as I usually do when the book is as good as this one.If you like wide-ranging and well-written books such as those written by Jared Diamond, you'll love this book. I've enjoyed reading, especially history all my life, and this book is the reason why: I learned a lot I didn't know.I certainly never realized that salt has been critical to human existence for thousands of years. From prehistoric times, the easily obtainable salt supply was far more limited than now, and salt sources were often the basis of human settlements word-wide throughout history until only recently.The book is never tedious or boring. Reading the book showed me (once again) that a well-written history book can be a fascinating enjoyment.FEU

With so many other reviews I will keep this short......Who in the world could make such a dry subject so interesting, entertaining and informative? Only Mark Kurlansky. Kurlansky has a natural, easy and fluid flow to his words that make him a joy to read. This work spans the years from the very first know salt works to the modern day efforts of Leslie and Morton. He spends a lot of time with the makers of Tabasco on Avery Island La. because that story is so darn interesting-and the product is familiar to us all. It turns out that the hot sauce maker is co-located with an underground pillar of salt that might be 40,000 feet deep. And don't let me get started on the complexities of Chinese cooking, not to say the inventiveness of Chinese salt manufacturers. This is an excellent story from a top flight writer.

This book should not have been this good. I mean, really, who would expect that a critical history of Salt, would make for a good read. But this is a darn good book. Mixing history, economics, anthropology, biology and cooking, it's an eye opening view of something that the modern world takes completely for granted. The writing is enjoyable and the author really takes you on a journey through humanity's love of, and dependence on, common table salt.

I had no idea that the word "salary" derives from the ancient Roman practice of paying soldiers with salt. This is just one of many dozens of fascinating little factoids peppered, if you will, throughout "Salt."The modern world takes salt for granted. But for most of mankind's history, salt cultivation and transport was a massive enterprise across every civilization. This is a fascinating, illuminating read, very well written and generously illustrated. It's one of those books you never forget. Highly recommended.

Kurlansky offers a wide-ranging history of salt--detailing its many uses--from food preservation to gunpowder and de-iceing roads. He talks about its various forms--sea salt, rock salt, and other salts related to sodium chloride, and discusses the many ways it is produced, shipped and marketed. As it is a bulk item generally produced with low labor costs, high shipping costs can shut down any active source. Salt has long played a political role--being used to pay workers or soldiers (salary), provided. free to citizens, or taxed as a reliable source of government revenue (but where the temptation to abuse the taxing power may also. arise, leading to citizen uprisings). Throughout the book recipes that use salt in one way or another, and taken from historical. sources, are reproduced. With the modern use of refrigerators and freezers salt is less used to preserve food, but continues to be an important raw material in many industries.

This book is built upon the stuff that for a non-professional historian would be the material for a wonderful and deep 20 page article. Salt .... a resource that was the basis of civilizations, commerce and war. The 'petroleum' and OPEC of the ancient world. But all the detail on recipes for medieval fish stew (or whatever) were wonderful to know to exist, but left me bored and frequently skipping pages. I will give it three stars for comprehensive research and a great embedded article, but really, the detail was too much. Two stars? FYI I have a degree in history....but that was 30 years ago, and meanwhile I have resided in the world of commerce. Other minds will differ; peace to all.

Great read for the history buff. Very interesting details of how a variety of things came to be and the roll salt played on it. While I wouldn't put it in the category of "non-fiction that reads like fiction", it held my attention very well and seems to be written very well and an easy read. Also contained a number of ancient recipes which illustrated that it sometimes took months, weeks, or days to prepare certain dishes. Strange but entertaining.

This book starts with some background knowledge, but what I like the most about it is how practical it is there are tons of teacher ready tools to use right away with your classroom, I have seen a lot of growth in my teaching and classroom management because of this book. Thank you Dr. Hollie for giving teachers tools to better connect with and recognize the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of our students.

Contains a lot of suggestions for activities and explanations on how to make teaching activities more inclusive.

It's an interesting read, but nothing that I'd consider new information as far as the classroom practices and ideas go.

Excellent tools for both conceptual background and classroom work regarding working with non-mainstream cultures.

This book is does a nice job of repackaging SIOP and other ESOL techniques, to show how they can be effective in providing opportunities for linguistically and culturally diverse student engagement and learning. This book has become very popular lately, makes me glad more people are learning effective techniques for reaching diverse students.
