I am a fourth grade teacher. This book has been like gold in my classroom this year. It has been passed from one student to the next, and each student has loved it. I have a student that cannot get through more than a few pages in a book before he gets "bored," and he couldn't put this book down. Highly recommend!

I bought several copies of this for the young athletes, in our family. They had favorites, in the book, and have enjoyed the read! This was just another way to expose our kids to great athletes and it shows how they, too, have everyday lives and struggles.

This book was especially amazing because of its short but detailed passages about all of these future amazing athletes. If you haven't read this book yet it is great and it won't let you down! Also read "Kid Presidents" this book is also awesome and has short but detailed passages about all of these future presidents. My favorite story from the "Kid Athletes" book was Tiger Woods and his distracting dad. Make sure to read this book! #awsomebook@amazon.com

I especially appreciated the bio of the author of “Hunt Them Down.”The opening displayed great potential, for enjoyment and for disappointment. By Chapter 4, I was, alas, leaning towards disappointment. Why?1 - The author gives us an info dump about Chicago and the street value of a kilo of heroin and how some $15 Mn is peanuts to a drug cartel. Granted, if done correctly, this sort of information CAN lend credibility, so at this point I’m not too concerned, but...2 - The writer decides he wants the embedded tv journalist (equipped with his own camera, I think, to be a hater of police “bullies” (author’s words, not mine). The reporter is a ‘prima donna’ who live tweets a raid, thus enabling an escape/defense by cartel members, who kill a member of the team. Mind you, all of this happens in the first three or four chapters, so I don’t consider these revelations to be spoilers. When you come across a reporter who dares to even think of his greatness stemming from tragedy, well, part of me wanted to toss my Kindle-app equipped iPad across the room. But, then, as a former journalist, I don’t view the media as an enemy of the people.But, I abhor reviews that reveal too much of a book’s plot, so will stop here.BLUSH FACTOR: One might expect an Action-Adventure to feature hard-edged characters evoking profanities. In that sense, there are no surprises here. Some will be disappointed in the number of eff-words, but, as for me, the language spoken felt real, even if the number exceeded the artistic needs. Everything desirable in a life or death kidnapped teenage girl(s) tale of torture and revenge and acting maverick outside the box. Very very violent but very little over the top carnal behavior or sexual violence.

I try to finish every book I start, but after reading the first 80 pages, I just could not find anything interesting in this book to make it worth wasting the time to finish it.

THE SURGEON of CROWTHORNEIt's the story of the relationship between the Scottish man that headed the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary & the man that contributed the most as a volunteer layman to it's creation. The head of the project started life as a commoner & the layman was from a dynastic American family. The layman became a surgeon & served during the Revolutionary War. These opposites ring their lives & yet they spent 20 years working together on the OED (which took 70 years to finish) but never met until about 10 years into their collaboration on the project despite the fact they were but few miles apart. The Scot holds the place of one of the finest scholars that ever lived & the American descended into madness & killed an innocent Englishman in England due to his insanity. The American then spent all but the final 10 years of his life in a sanatorium, quite literally insane until his death in 1920 & the Scot did not know that his number one amateur contributor was in an asylum until ten years of collaboration had past. This, despite the fact they lived less than 45 miles apart.The book is a contrast of their lives & a telling of their collaboration done in such a way as to be hypnotic. It also covers the difficulties of creating dictionaries but that is a side story. The contrast, comparison, confluence & inverted results of these two lives from their beginnings to their ends is told in a style that I can only compare to Paul Harvey's The Rest of the Story. It is also a grander use of the English language than Paul used in my mind. I simply can't read it fast because I don't want to. I read a few pages, think about what's in them & then read a few more. I can't recommend it highly enough to those that like History & researched personal stories about those that lived through them. Two great & fascinating characters who you would never expect to meet each other, let alone becoming the cornerstones of a great undertaking that didn't end for seventy years. It's a good primer on those times too & certainly not an extremely long read.The ending of the story is a paean to sadness, tragedy & loss amidst the creation & fulfillment of a great project that is today the foundation of communication of thoughts, ideas & understanding in the English language. The Author's Note at the end of the tale is not to be missed due to the accurate description of this tale & the impact on those involved. A story of powerful achievement that is yet overpowered by its description of an all too human series of events that has as it's single redeeming feature its facilitation of understanding between humanity.

This book was recommended to me by lucky chance, as otherwise I may never have discovered the delight of reading The Surgeon of Crowthorne. Simon Winchester is a master of his craft - every page is written with sensitivity and takes you into other worlds. Right down to the final Postscript, Simon keeps you enthralled with this compelling narrative. Tragic it may well be, but an extraordinary tale, not only of the fine line between madness and genius but how the Dictionary that shaped our very language came into being.

If you like Simon Winchester's "Krakatoa" and "The Man Who Loved China" but couldn't bear "The Men Who United the States," then this is your book. No attempt to unite disparate facts into some strange thesis.

An historical account in novel form the key protagonist in this book is a real life madman and a murdering madman at that. Although obviously in possession of a brllliant mind some of his actions are inexplicable, shocking even. So why did I come to sympathise with him so much? The author himself is entirely non commital in terms of his judgement of this man's weaknesses but there is something about his almost arms length writing style and his gentle unravelling of the story that gives the reader no choice but to form an opinion. Parallel to the madman's story runs the incredible true story of the beginning of the Oxford English Dictionary. And what a story it is. The sheer immensity of the task of defining every word in the English language is articulated brilliantly as volunteers labour painstakingly to provide examples of the use of every single word in alphabetical order. Entertaining, enlightening and strangely emotive I highly recommend this book.

I think took me half the book before I decided to actually read it! It reads like a documentary rather than a story. Quite interesting once I figured that was it. As a 'documentary', I liked it although I would not have ventured past a quarter of it were it not for the book club book of the month.

Fabulous, riveting read. The opening chapter was read as an introduction on a lecture entitled "You and I" about the relationship between reader and writer. And, of course, the only way that the two can communicate is through words. This book is about how words got defined but it reads like a detective story.

A thoroughly engrossing true story of a mentally disturbed man, his great literary knowledge, and his enormous (and unheralded) contribution to the production of the world's greatest dictionary. An excellent read.

I was never a big journal or diary keepers as a child. After a pretty serious head injury that resulted in some memory issues. I had a new found respect for the idea. However, I really wasn't to sure how to get started. So I tried this book first. I have recently finished it. I enjoyed how it is well balanced between serious and funny topics. Another thing that I liked about this book is that it is a hard cover book. As I plan to keep it and may even pass on years from now. I would recommend it for those (older) beginning journal writers out there as in the front cover it states suit able for adults and not children or teens.

First, I must say I am in no way affiliated with the author or Publishers of this book. I just love it!I purchased this book as a part of a self-discovery process and I can't speak highly enough about it! It was referred to me by a highly respected therapist in my area, and I loved it so much I bought several copies of the book to give to others, who also gave me great feedback.The book has multiple formats of asking questions. I find this particularly effective because one format does not necessarily work for everyone. There are true and false questions, fill in the blank questions, multiple choice, etc.The font is large enough, and the pages short enough, that I never felt overwhelmed when reading / filling out the book. In fact, on the contrary, it was so much fun, I had to use discipline to keep myself from trying to complete the book in one sitting... Which I do not recommend. Some of the questions require deep thought... Make sure you take the time to do just that, and give quality answers. You'll look back later and be happy you did.Another suggestion I have four people is to look at the book one year or two years later and read your answers. Sometimes it's surprising how much you've changed. I found it beneficial to buy another copy a few years later and fill that one out, and I plan to continue this process. It's very interesting to go back and read my various answers throughout the years in my growth process.Definitely a quality use of time and money - order it today!

Love love love these books. This is the 3rd one I've bought. I got one for myself, my mother and father so that we can pass them down throughout generations. Its a nice family heirloom that will allow our relatives to know exactly who we are, our beliefs, our egos, our past, hopes, dreams, careers, loves, likes, dislikes, ext. Its the foundation of our family & im so thankful that this book was made. I'll be ordering one for my fiancee as part of his bday present soon and when my daughters old enough, she'll also be receiving one. I just love this book!

I first filled this book out when I was 21 years old; looking back now on my answers, they're definitely cringe worthy. Fifteen years later I purchased another book, and it's refreshing to see how different my answers are now that I've matured, now with a family of my own, a career. I definitely recommend this to everyone I know, these make great gifts too, to cherish forever!

Great journal! I have been struggling to put pen to paper for months now and this has offered an excellent solution and guide to my dilemma. Whether you are looking to get back to writing, need some reflection or healing, this is a spectacular item for yourself or a friend. A mix of thought-provoking and simple questions, it does a great job of detailing one's life. The mundane facts of daily life are gathered just as well as the exciting episodes.My reservations-Though the writing areas can be a bit narrow, I have no real complaints. It does ask some questions that can be overly personal, but that is why this book should be kept private/safe anyway.

The only downside to this book is that it has glossy pages, but that was an easy fix if you have a fine tip sharpie. Besides that this is a great book.

A fantastic little book that captures life. A great way for parents, children, and significant others to know something about each other. People change and so do views so every two years you give each other one of these books during a special event (Christmas, Anniversaries, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Wedding etc.). These are filled out at your leisure when you're by yourself and think about how to answer the question. Highly recommended which serves to capture family historical events.

These books are amazing and make great gifts. I did one 10 years ago and another one just now and plan to do one every 10 years. It's like a time capsule of yourself and when I'm 80 I'll be able look back at my thoughts when I was 20 and in my opinion, that is priceless!

I bought this with every intention of filling it out and havent even started page one yet. Its almost overwhelming. Its extremely detailed and some of the questions i saw further into the second halfnof the book, i think i might pass on. If my kids read this some day, its none of their business how many sexual partners ive had. THIS IS NOT FOR KIDS. It really is a good book and could be fun but now it just feels like a daunting task. As if im a 33 year old 5th grader pretending i dont have homework and doing anything to avoid it.
