We have most of the " Night Before" books and really enjoy reading them. This particular book has very dark pages as well as most of the pages have blue or black text. There are a few pages with white text that can clearly be read but there are a few pages that are extremely difficult to see and read the text.

I liked this book even better than expected even. it is really well written to cover kid's fears, expectations, and excitement from getting a loose tooth to how to get it out (apple or a doorknob with string), and the tooth fairy finally coming. Very cute. My husband liked it too

Got this for my 5 year old grandson. He had a wiggly tooth and thought I would get this for him along with the "hedgehog tooth fairy pillow" as a gift. He just loved this book and the pillow. Great combo. Book had a great storyline with very good illustration.

I purchased a few of these to go along with a birthday gift theme that I gave to several children. Included for each child was....a Tooth Fairy pillow with a little pocket for the tooth to hang on their bedroom door (name engraved on each one), A Tooth Fairy pillow case (also personalized), a Tooth Fairy doll, and naturally this wonderful Tooth Fairy book. Their mommies can read them the story before they fall asleep that night and see what was left in the pocket where the tooth "used to be". Children love to be read to, and reading this book to them makes the "magic" even more enchanting.

Cute book. Got it with a tooth pillow and left it on my daughters bed. When she came home from school she had thought her very own tooth fairy named Natasha Wing (the authors name) had brought it for her. We read it weekly with the hopes her tooth will soon fall out!

Very simple easy read but wish the story line was longer or slightly more complex or had more about the process of a kids real fears/emotions about pulling or losing a tooth. In the book the kids tooth just pops out when a dog bumps into him which isn’t very realistic.

Love the rhymes. Very enjoyable to read to children of all ages. We have the whole collection and read them for the associated occasion.

This was such a cute book. I have a 5 year old son who just lost his first tooth & a baby who is growing his first took & this book was about two brothers going through the same thing so it was so perfect for us.

Mr. Nosey is horrifying! I instantly returned this book once I was able to read the entire thing. I cannot believe people think this story is okay. I’m pro original Hans Christian Anderson tales, gore and all, but this story is terrible. Cutting off someone’s nose because you think they’re annoying? What lesson is this supposed to teach? That it’s okay to be violent towards people that annoy you?

The Little Miss: Pocket Library was a bit disappointing. Each book is about 5 pages. They are not stories; more like bios of each character. Not what I was looking for.To be fair, the books are good quality (very small board books). I just wished there was more to them.

This book (Mr Dizzy) is missing pages (deliberately). The writing has been merged and pictures removed. It seems this kind of thing is also concealed by the fact that reviews are not of individual products. Note, this is not a review of the story, but I don't think that matters as the reviews are all merged anyway.

My Son just loves this book! He lost his first one, so this was a replacement. The whole book collection is worth while, I consider the humor just a little more to an adult level, not in a R rated version. Parent's will get a kick out of this book also.

I should have read the details better. These are tiny board books with very little writing. Was trying to get a Miss set to go with my daughters Men. She is 6 and like them, but it's not much ready for her. These are baby books.

Mr. Greedy LOVES food! What he eats for breakfast would feed our whole family and more. No sooner has he finished breakfast then he starts thinking about lunch! Out on a walk, he comes across the giant's house and the delicious meal waiting on the table - sausages the size of pillows, peas the size of cabbages etc! The giant has him sussed and decides to teach him a lesson. (Reminds me of Bruce Bogtrotter with the chocolate cake in Matilda.) Is there maybe a better way to teach your child not to eat as much? Yes! BUT the lesson here is that Mr. Greedy did indeed learn his lesson, kept his promise not to be greedy ever again thereby gaining control over his original lack of self-control and ended up looking much better for it.A great book for all ages!

Mr. Grumble is as you can guess by his name, GRUMPY! When his alarm clock goes off in the morning he says, "Bah! It's the start of yet another horrible day!"Hmm... how to cure him? Well, a wizard comes along who doesn't "like people who are constantly grumbling and moaning." What does he do? He turns Mr. Grumble into a little pig! As you read on through the story, you will read how each time Mr. Grumble grumbles he becomes a larger and larger pig? Does this cure him? You'll have to read to find out!

I loved these books when I was three and now my three year old loves them too. I'm so glad they are still in print and easy to find. Something about these simple colorful illustrations and fantastical stories really captures the attention of children ages 3-5. Added the little miss collection to my daughters Christmas list :)

Blow Fly, by Patricia Cornwell

From Publishers Weekly

"Please don't go there. The past is the past," sighs New York Assistant District Attorney Jaime Berger, who herself was introduced in Cornwell's last Kay Scarpetta novel, The Last Precinct (2000). Alas, many of Cornwell's fans are bound to agree. One fascinating nonfiction bestseller (Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper, Case Closed) later, Cornwell now returns to Scarpetta, formerly Virginia's chief medical examiner. From the start, however, the formidable author is up against the equally formidable task of getting her charismatic main character off ice and back in action. We encounter Scarpetta languishing in a crumbling little rental house in Florida. She has taken refuge there and become a private forensic consultant after she was driven from her job for her alleged involvement in the murder of a deputy police chief. The violent death of her lover, Benton Wesley, the brilliant FBI psychological profiler, has left her filled with an unappeasable grief. When the coroner in Baton Rouge asks her advice on a cold case concerning an affluent woman found dead of a drug overdose in a seedy hotel, it seems little more than a diversion. Yet it becomes clear that the overdose may be related to a fresh string of serial killings. Also disturbing Scarpetta's somber peace is a troubling letter from someone out to kill her, the sick and obsessed death-row inmate Jean-Baptiste. When Scarpetta is at last allowed to get back to business, she is a feisty, independent powerhouse whose capacity to concentrate and observe rivals Sherlock Holmes's. But too much of this book is bound up in retrospective musings about events in previous books. The great Scarpetta, her fiery crime-busting niece, Lucy, and a colorful supporting cast deserve better.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Kay Scarpetta fans will miss their favorite forensic pathologist in this new thriller, as Cornwell cedes much of the spotlight to other characters in the long-running series. Lucy, Kay's defiant niece, and Marino, the bad-tempered, opinionated cop, are here, as are several familiar depraved psychopaths--among them, "Wolfman" Jean-Baptiste Chandonne and his twin brother, who first surfaced in Black Notice (2000). It appears that Chandonne, whose execution date is drawing near, wants to see Kay, ostensibly to reveal information about his family that will ensure the collapse of their Mob cartel and to have her administer the drug that will end his life. But, as usual in Cornwell's more recent books, absolutely nothing is what it seems. Granted, there are some compelling (and gruesome) moments, and a few loose ends from previous books are finally taken care of... Otherwise, though, this is a murky stew, indeed, with action careening in way too many directions. Oh, for a return to the Cornwell who created the tough but vulnerable Scarpetta, who, at center stage, used her intellect and forensic training to solve a more straightforward mystery. I very much dislike this book. I'd bet it was written by someone else, the syntax is different, the cadence is different, the primary characters are wrong, and the book is even written in 3rd person, unlike all the prior books in the series. This book sucks. If you want the spoiler, I can summarize the 2 plot items you'll waste hours extracting. If it saves you the misery of reading this drivel, I'll consider it a consolation prize.Maybe the next will suck too, not sure; but after several engaging books, this is a poor example of the written word, and a complete waste if my valuable time.I might be done with this author for good.

I've read quite a few Scarpetta books and know the characters. With past experience in mind, I thought this one would be good. I was dissapointed as it was needlessly long in some portions of the story where I found myself skipping through much of it as it didn't really add that much. I finally got to the climatic end and it did just that - ended suddenly. I know the author wants cliffhangers to spur sales of the next one, but this was really sub par in how it was handled IMO, especially in light of how the long winded story lines were done through most of the rest of the book.

The early Scarpetta novels were well-paced, full of character development, and fun to read. This was disjointed and flat. I spent the entire book waiting for the story to get started. When I reached the end, I wasn't sure what had been accomplished, how we had gotten to where we were, or what the actual point of the story was. Not worth the effort...to read or to write.

Can I give Blow Fly 0 stars? Terrible! It seemed as though this book was written by a totally different author - completely different writing style & story telling. No longer is Dr. Scarpetta telling the story in the 1st person, & there was a good bit of revisionist history. Did Cornwell forget the story arcs from the previous books? Also, while the previous novels in this series were somewhat graphic, this one was simply gross & bordering on pornographic. I almost quit reading it after the first few chapters but kept hoping it would get better. It did not. The ending was terrible & made no sense at all. I'm not sure I'll be reading any more of this series. A sample of the next one seems to contain the same priblems as this one.

haven't read her for awhile so when a buy deal was offered, I jumped. Now, at more than half way thru, I'm here hoping to find a review that tells me the end so I don't have to read anymore. It's a well written book; but, I just don't like all the gore and jumping around with so little dialog. The characters are barely recognizable and I don't believe thats all because of my absence. So disappointed...mostly because no reviews reveal the end and I actually have to go back and finish the last 30%.

I have read all of the books in the series. This one is way off track. I prefer a more realistic story. Kay's character is plenty interesting without adding super human villains and unbelievable story lines. Come on cornwell, get back to what made the books great. I want to see Kay doing what she does best, forensic detective. And put Marino on a diet and get him healthy! That would be more realistic than some of the villains in this book!

I’ve read every Patricia Cornwell Scarlett’s Mystery, except for this one. I stopped reading this one when it became too graphically gruesome. I am officially in mourning.

I've read many Patricia Cornwell novels and was unable to even finish this one. I may do so at a later time, but was unable to stay interested and focused on the storyline. There is usually a murder to be solved and this one did not really have Dr. Scarpetta working on a crime and I was over halfway into the book! Very disappointing to me as a Cornwell fan. I moved on to the next book in the series after trying to finish Blow Fly unsuccessfully. It just wasn't the style I prefer reading so I moved on to another.

I passed the SHRM CP test using only this book and 8 years of HR/Operations and 20 years of working in a professional environment. My tip is to read through the Q&A before going back and reading the sections. Because I was already knowledgeable on the relevant laws, I skipped most of that in the book and studied the subjective and situational questions/answers/info. Im glad I did as there was only a handful of legal questions.

I had to write this review while the test was fresh on my brain. First off, I PASSED!Secondly, this book is the reason I PASSED so easily! The questions were almost EXACTLY the same on the test. I passed with 2.5 hours to spare.I have a fairly good background in HR and did study thoroughly, so this book doesnt get all the credit. However, none of the other sample quizzes I purchased were this spot on. Having it on the phone made studying even easier as I could do it anywhere. Seeing the answers and reasons to the answers immediately added so much value. It doesnt have an app, but you can login using a browser on your phone. It looks good enough on my phone to study with (Motorola Z3).The cost of the book compared to the benefit, its probably the most worthwhile investment you will make in your journey to become an HR leader.I believe in formal studying, so don't avoid doing that, but this book basically gave me the answers to half the exam. A MUST BUY.

I would like to inform you that I ordered your study guide SHRM-CP Exam, I tried different kinds of study guides, and nothing assisted my needs in this study. So far, my experience with this study guide is excellent, and the study material meets my requirements. My rating is positively a 5 (highest rating). I will certainly refer this product to my peers.Thank you.Amy V.

This book along with the SHRM approved study guide are what I used to self teach for the exam. I did pass the first time.I would give yourself plenty of time to learn these concepts, but these do cover most competencies that SHRM wants you to learn. Make sure you learn the competencies first, but allow yourself time to understand how to apply them. Give yourself time to complete the practice tests too! The actual test takes a lot more time than the practice tests, so take these as many times as you can to prep.

Overall, I give this study guide an average rating. It has a feel of a cut/paste project that was thrown together in a rush. Yes, there are a few noticable grammar errors, but it doesn't bother me much, as content and user-friendliness are more important to me at this point. PROS: It addresses relevant SHRM info, and is concise. CONS: I feel it could have been structured in a more "precept upon precept" manner, for easier review and retention.

Great preparation guide! This was the only study material I used to pass the test the 1st time. The practice tests were very similar to those on the actual exam. I made flash cards of the terms in the book as well.

It probably didn't hurt but I'm not sure how much it helped either. Some of the answer key letters were wrong thought the explanation applied to the correct answer which was irritating because it brought into question the validity of every question I had already went through. The questions, like the actual test, were very subjective and I disagreed with some of the answers; though I probably would disagree with some of the answers the experts decided were correct on the actual test as well. Most importantly, I passed the exam; I'm just very unclear on how much this actually helped me.

I have never used a study guide that was so informative. It provided me with the right techniques/tools that I need to be successful. I think this study guide is excellent for anyone preparing for the SHRM Certification. I like everything about the SHRM Certification Prep: Study Guide.

I do not know what I expected when I started reading this book, but soon found myself totally absorbed in each story on the battlefield. Since I have not been in the service, let alone in combat, I was fascinated by the places they worked and the accommodations for the nurses. It amazed me how many were regulars, away from their husbands and children! I can not imagine leaving for a year or two with small children at home! I am a retired Nurse Practitioner who has not worked in any situation except civilian hospitals in my younger years and then Public Health after age 40. The nurses of my generation served but not during war time. The book is very well written and researched. I feel it a privilege to have entered into these brave peoples lives while they served our country, and did it so well! It is bound to have a major impact on the rest of their lives!

I know nothing about nursing or about military life but this book gave me the opportunity to learn. The stories are remarkable. I had no idea that the living conditions were so primitive or the danger so ever-present. The type of injuries that these nurses dealt with on a daily basis were horrific. I came away with a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for these men and women and have been recommending this book to everyone I know. It's a shame that the media has covered very little on the subject of military medicine and the work these people have done should be common knowledge in our country, and sadly that isn't the case.

Real People, Real Nurses. This is a must if you know or knew anyone in the military or in the health field. Dr Scannell-Desch writes from personal experience who is a retired Colonel in the US AirForce. Validates and captivates. I am thankful that this has been made available for all to understand the many faces of war.

As a retired Army nurse, I respect my colleagues from all branches of the military. The authors have managed to capture emotions in these life-saving stories. Ivolunteered for OIF three times, yet was not selected. After reading these rivetingaccounts and talking with other Army nurses, I think I was blessed because no onereturns the same. The authors did an outstanding writing of important narratives.

Very interesting book, highly recommend for those nurses or medics who are about to deploy or have deployed these past 10+ years. By learning from others experiences, future deployers will be better prepared for the experiences and hardships of war. The book is very readable, fast paced and covers experiences of nurses in various roles and geographic settings. The authors did a wonderful job, both with their research and presentation of these nurses making them real to the reader! Sections by both Gen Stierle and Gen Rank were wonderful additions!!

Great book, I was in Afghanistan as a Nurse. Tells it like it is from a personal perspective of those who served.

Whether you're thinking about a career as a military nurse or just wanting to share in the experience this book book is a great read.

I love this book, For all the Women and Men who use there skill in Nursing to help these wounded men and women, I Thank You for you Service and Dedication. Also to My Daughter-in-Law on the cover, one of the many highly skilled CCNS.

It's not often that once I start reading a new book that I intentionally "go slow" and re-read paragraphs to make sure that I fully understand what's going on. In a sense, it's a strategy to prolong the pleasure of the read. This is one of those rare books. In addition to being one of the few decent Japanese accounts of WWII, the destroyer (and cruiser) commander's observations are noteworthy. He gives insights into tactical and strategic blunders on both sides of the conflict. Moreover, he participated in most of the major engagements of the War (although his role at Midway was very minor), and fills in details about how the Japanese Navy used and misused its assets from the very start. The grinding effect of growing material and technological advantages by the U.S. is clearly delineated, as is his grudging respect for the talents of American sailors as the War progressed. The only "difficult to digest" comments made by Captain Hara are assertions that Japanese actions such as the infamous rape of Nanking were "exaggerated". He retains the blinders that almost all Japanese have worn since the late 1930s concerning the realities of their actions in the Asian theater of War. Despite this, it's a truly fascinating book.

I first read this book back in the late 1960s. As a history major at the time, I had been studying the naval war with Japan for many years and much about it just did not make sense. Why did the Japanese keep on making so many mistakes? There were not stupid, notwithstanding our own propaganda to that effect. After Captain Hara published his book, historians all over the world were jumping up and down. At last they had an inside view of how the Japanese military had been structured, how inflexible it had become, how it was strategically commanded not by naval staff, but by the needs of the Army. They also came to understand how in the early battles, the U.S. naval forces had fared so badly. Much of it was because of Captain Hara's torpedo doctrine and the navy's vastly superior long range oxygen driven torpedo. But the army was so focused on its own problems, it did not prepare for the obsolescence of its own equipment and/or the needs of the navy which it relied upon for so much. The Japanese naval high command was also a mess. It did not rely on battle hardened veterans, but rather stuck with its rigid class system and kept on promoting those who never understood the nature of the enemy they faced or the influence technology would have upon its outcome. That Captain Hara was critical of these commanders can only be seen as a very good thing. Many fine Japanese sailors died needlessly because of their errors. Hopefully, today they have eliminated these problems and will not be fighting the last war when the next one is forced upon them.I have recommended this book many times to young people who have shown an interest in the naval war in the Pacific. It is simply the best book to come out of the war, and notwithstanding the many fine military folks who disagree with me, preferring a more patriotic view, it reveals our enemy of the time in fine detail and tells a story of that conflict no one on our side could match. No study of the naval war could be complete without a thorough understanding of Captain Hara's great adventures. If he made mistakes in his depiction of various battles and/or facts, as some here have claimed, those mistakes have been matched many times over by our own battle observers and writers. That is the nature of war and bias.Gerald Lane Summers. See my own books.Mobley's Law, A Mobley Meadows Novel

Once a century there is a great naval war. Somewhere ahead in the 21st Century one lies in ambush. While Trafalgar, Tsushima Straits, and Midway capture the headlines, the deeper truth of victory lies in the battle of attrition that is fought by the patrol craft, frigates and destroyers on either side. Capt Hara has done a great service to all professional Navy men is dissecting why Japan lost the naval war with the United States in World War II. In the early days, Japan had the better destroyers and the tactical edge. Theirs were faster and with the Long Lance torpedo put their ships outside the reach of US naval gunfire. They won most of the early engagements at the tactical level because of this and their practice of perfecting it in night engagements. As Capt Hara points out so starkly, they lost because of three factors.>First, the Americans achieved tactical parity within a year but at a high price in Iron Bottom Sound. They discovered and corrected the problem with their own torpedoes failure to explode on impact at the high price of battle losses. They rapidly mastered the intricacies of night fighting. More importantly, they became better at combined arms, meaning their use of ships, planes, information, reconnaissance and surveillance started jelling together in a boxer's combination of footwork, body blows and one-two-three punches to defeat their enemy over time rather than seeking one knock out punch.>Second, on the operational level, the Japanese navy failed to commit a sufficient naval mass, which they had at hand, to crush the American's at Guadalcanal. The Japanese High Command was focused on China and Southeast Asia leaving the backdoor open in what Churchill may have called the "soft underbelly" of the Solomon, Marshall and Caroline Islands. Caution: I wouldn't use that term to a sailor, soldier or marine who fought their way up to the Philippines, Iwo Jima, or Okinawa.>Third, while trite today to say this, Japan had not the industrial strength or stamina to out produce the United States. Its losses were permanent. They put too much steel into super battleships like Yamato and could not produce the massive amounts of ammunition for them or their other ships that the United States commanders could use without a second thought of running out of shells. The famous quote attributed to Admiral Yamamoto's after the attack on Peril Harbor came true: "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with terrible resolve." A great part of the hobbling of Japan's industrial strength goes to the Navy's strategic decision to commit its submarine force to the destruction of Japan's merchant fleet of ore and oil carriers. One can only wonder in today's era of super containerships and extra large oilers what a short, high intensity submarine campaign could do to cave in the American consumers will to win a war among titan nations.>For the amateur and the professional alike, Capt. Hara makes it abundantly clear that defeat at the tactical and operational levels rested at the highest strategic command levels. Actually, Capt Hara is very pointed that only one man, Chief of Naval General Staff, was responsible for all the major command decisions of how the fleet would be deployed. The American's on the other hand praise the decisions of Adm Nimitz and Adm King, our top two flag officers during the war. The book leaves one to wonder: How do we decide who should make our strategic decisions? Should the makeup of the man, or now a day's possibly the woman, be the deciding factor or should the decision making process be the focus of concern? Probably both. A Navy is an expensive investment, just ask the Russians. Losing a naval war is not an option. Just read Capt Hara for proof of that.

I have a paperback copy I purchased in the 1960s that is almost worn to tatters. I was delighted to find it for Kindle to add to my digital library. The story is a very informative, and engrossing account of a Japanese Captain, and his life in the Imperial Navy. I have many books about the UIS Navy in the Pacific War, but this in one of only a few showing the "other side". In recent years a few others have been translated into English and made available to broaden my understanding of the events of my father's time.

Enduring Divine Absence: The Challenge of Modern Atheism (Davenant Engagements), by Joseph Minich

Review

“Most people today become atheists less because of persuasive arguments than because of the social realities of our secular age. There are plenty of good apologetics books out there. But few target the ‘gut’—that is, the pre-understandings and social practices that make belief in God more difficult today than in previous generations. This is a must-read.” —MICHAEL HORTON PROFESSOR OF SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY AND APOLOGETICS, WESTMINSTER SEMINARY CALIFORNIA "Joseph Minich’s Enduring Divine Absence is a marvelous essay that deals with the underappreciated temptation or psychological pull of atheism, the feeling that atheism is still somehow plausible even for believers who are aware of atheism’s intellectual problems. Minich thoughtfully analyzes this temptation, beginning with accurately and sympathetically explaining what it actually feels like (and I would know). He then gives insightful suggestions on some of its main causes, and ends by helpfully offering practical advice for those who feel it (who are more numerous than most of us realize). Again, Minich clearly understands those who are tempted in this way, gently assuring them that it is an entirely understandable feeling, but without going so far as to make doubt a positive, Promethean virtue that’s necessary for “the journey of faith.” I recommend this book to those who have nagging doubts about God’s existence or have been surprised by the sting of an objection to Christianity. I greatly benefited from it." —MITCH STOKES SENIOR FELLOW OF PHILOSOPHY, NEW SAINT ANDREWS COLLEGE “The problem of God’s hiddenness is not new. The Psalmist questioned, “Why, O LORD, do you stand far away?” Isaiah exclaimed in wonder, “Truly, you are a God who hides himself!” And yet, in the modern period—our secular age—a pervasive sense of God’s absence presses in on the Late Modern self with peculiar force. Even believers of deep faith, with a grasp on the rational reasons for belief in God, still feel the force of his absence. they too can be caught in the imaginative appeal of living bravely in a world without God. In this elegant little work, Joseph Minich explores a bit of the history and a uniquely perceptive account of the existential reality of how and why that is the case. More importantly, for all who would learn to faithfully endure nevertheless, he wisely points us to the God Who Is and who is for us in the Cross. I highly recommend this work.” —DEREK RISHMAWY TRINITY EVANGELICAL DIVINITY SCHOOL AND CONTRIBUTOR TO "OUR SECULAR AGE"

So, the one previous review of this little work shows the painful ignorance of the reviewer. Minnich’s book isn’t a book seeking to refute Atheism as such. Anyone with a modicum or reading ability would realize this. That being said, to the book! Munich does a good job of laying out a common problem for intellectual theists. Often we have this issue of finding atheism to be a viable or live option, even though we know it is riddled with logical problems. Whence comes this psychological phenomena? Minnich’s books seeks to answer that question.

Here is yet another fabulous book for our "secular age." However, the angle taken in this little essay is still unique, especially in regards to the way in which modern Christians in the West, in a sort of default way, feel as though the world in which they live is so far removed from the "enchanted cosmos" of previous periods and generations. As such, there is a powerful tendency among us to "lose" our faith in way that is less akin to being argued out of it and more like having it expire and drain out because we cannot, through our own willpower and mental faculties, keep up with the secular onslaught and maintain it in the midst of it all. Thus, our "apologetic" in the 21st-century might need to shift and look a little less like learning to rationally and philosophically judo chop our opponents (as it did in the 20th-century) and more like seeking ways to recover an enchanted cosmos, through historic worship, spiritual disciplines, and so on.So here's the bottom line: If you ever wonder why atheism has such a "pull" even on Christians, this book is for you. If you ever wonder how Christians can move forward despite our increasingly complex and secular times, this book is for you. But if you're looking for a book that will equip you with answers and arguments for your discussions with atheists, this isn't exactly what you're looking for (though I really think you should still read it).

The author is fair and square about his take on the subject of atheism. Some good points that will make you think about the whole subject.

Not a typical apologetics book. Helpful to understand the "aesthetic appeal" of atheism to both believers and non-believers.

Religious tract masquerading as a book about atheism!
