I've always kept a written journal, but never thought of being creative with them until I saw this book on display at a bookstore. I've sinced thumbed through many other similar books (including Perrella's) and Deihn's are more instructive and interesting. I bought this book before I discovered her other one (specifically for Journaling); I'd recommend the latter if you don't do scrapbooks.She covers dry and wet processes, cutouts, copier transfers, design layout suggestions, altering book coverers, watercolor/gouache/stamping, and more. There's lots of examples for inspiration. This book is pretty complete.

I love this book! I first checked it out at the local library because I was taking an art class and looking for inspiration. I found it here. I was sharing this library book with my BFF, and she insisted on buying it for me. <3. The illustrations are clear and the narrative is wonderful - I feel as if she was speaking directly to me. I was actually moved to tears when I read about her finding the tree cut down (her first journal subject for a biology class). I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about journaling or learning about collage/assemblage. It inspired me to action, after "thinking about it" for years.

In truth, I'd have to say the proper guidance in anything we are learning will make the learning of the skill awesome, and Gwen Diehn is an awesome guide! If you really want the guidance in creating an art journal, Gwen's book is the one for you; covering everything from tools of the trade to how to plan a page to making each page of your journal as unique as you are. I really can't express in words just how helpful this guidebook has been to me. My own art journals are vastly improved by the multitude of ideas for journal pages Gwen provides in her well-written book 'The Decorated Page'. The only problem I found with the book was it inspired me to create a new decorated page with nearly every paragraph I read! Due to this fact, it took me quite awhile to actually read this whole book. Obviously, I highly recommend this it! If I were going to buy only one book on the subject of art journals, Gwen Diehn's 'The Decorated Page' is the one I'd want.

Lark publishes some wonderful books on the arts and crafts and this book actually turned out to be one of the best I have read on the art of creating a deeply personal and richly decorated personal journal.Any one who works on paper will mention that that pure white sheet staring back at your is terrifying. this book gives direction to overcoming that fear.It is not for the very neat because you will be gluing, splashing, coloring, and clipping; all to overcome that fear of the blank sheet.there are different artists whose work is very generously shown and who are very varied in style and content.The samples are marked by quite a whole range of emotions and styles.I loved the authors story of her beginning in journal making and felt that, that alone was worth the price of the book.Enjoyable, useful, inspirational and above all approachable for the creative person regardless of training or past artistic endeavors.I really gave myself a kick start in turning my endless boring journals into little pieces of myself on paper: metaphorically speaking

This book is a perfect introduction to the tools and techniques necessary for art journaling. That does not mean that the book only covers "introductory" techniques, but rather introduces and visually explains the tools and techniques that can be used in art journalling in many different ways. Diehn provides expert guidance on the tools that are "must haves" and how to acquire these items without spending a fortune. The best part about Gwen Diehn's approach is that she does not advocate simply buying pre-made scrap booking materials and gluing them on a page, but rather taking a few basic supplies, learning how to use them, and creating your own vision in your journal. This book is a "must have"!

I came to THE DECORATED PAGE as a text-centric journal-keeper who rarely added anything else, and that would be nothing much more than gluing in a comic strip, artifact or article relative to the content of an entry. I was leery of a book with this title: what mattered was the text, so why decorate extraneously for decoration sake? Then I read what Gwen Diehn had to say (and show) and I immediately went out and bought a small inexpensive watercolor set, water color pencils and a pack of cheap brushes. Diehn offers general how-to information about various techniques and tools and her book is richly illustrated with photographs of a variety of journals. This is a fine companion volume to the author's other book, THE DECORATED JOURNAL. Both are good for beginner or more advanced journal keepers and artists.What Diehn has to say is, other media can augment the meaning of the text with mood, highlighting and/or explicit illustration. She recounts her own revelation while keeping a scientific nature observation journal for a college course, and it was that story that woke me up. I'm not breaking my allegiance to text, and I am not decorating for the sake of decorating, but when I record the time of sunrise, for instance, I first lay some streaks of color that record the visual impact of it and write atop the streaks, and when I include a bulleted list or a tide chart, I set it off on a color block. It's a start and I thank Diehn for the encouragement.

I teach journaling classes, and I took this book in with me to share with the students. They were mesmerized by the wonderful photographs, excited by the creative ideas, and inspired to try new directions by combining text and image in their own journals. In a 2-hr class, the entire time was spent with this book, in a page-by-page focus and note-taking. It's not a "big" book, but it's packed with wonderful suggestions and techniques which any journaler would itch to try! There are also variations on standard formats, such as Japanese stab bindings, page layouts using grids and mandelas, techniques for cut-outs and add-ons, and samples and how-to-do-it sections. And it's all in wonderful color.

This book is a must read for anyone over 50 who is finding themselves without their life partner because of divorce, death, or other change of circumstance.The voice and focus is squarely on this reader. After the grief subsides and the partners clothes are packed away, should you wish for another chance at love, you'll probably need to wade or dive into the dating pool. If you, like me, fear the alligators and sharks,or even the slugs, this is a great book to realistically paint the landscape while offering hope.It would have gotten a 5 If there were discussion questions because I want to introduce this book to a mixed book discussion group as a way of launching a Turning Single group discussion.Anyway, read it along the way, as you would a drink a delightful sparkling wine on a hot day. I've been widowed twice now, once in my early 30s and the second time in my late 50s, both devastating losses of wonderful men. My second husband was not only my lover and dearest friend, but also my partner in a company we started up and ran together for 16 years. Then he developed Alzheimer's, and during his 7-year battle with the disease, I had to choose between caring for him at home until the end, versus the company and my career. That was a no-brainer. Sooooo... now that he is gone and I'm beginning to think about trying to climb out of the depths, I started looking for advice for widows on how to figure out what to do after such life-altering losses. I purchased several books that promised to do that.Frankly, at this point, I have zero interest in another relationship. But the title of this book tickled me, and the reviews intrigued me, so I bought it on a whim. And it's done far more for me than the "for widows only" books. It isn't a dating guide, it's a guide to looking into your own heart and soul and discovering who you really are ... or would like to be. It is, as others have said, very well-written, easy to read, thought-provoking, and wise.

After my husband of 37 years died, I was very confused about how this part of the social contract works these days. Swiping right and left isn't exactly me. The title is an eye-grabber, and not really what the book is about. This book gave me permission not to worry about swiping, or anything else. Being me is more important, and there's room for growth and as much experimentation as I want -- when I want it. The book is more about relaxing and having hope for a freer future, with tips on how to achieve that, whatever that means to you. Highly recommended for people who haven't thought about such things in a while.

As a newly single woman, I found much of this book informative and helpful.After a 18 year marriage, and a 5 year long term relationship, I suddenly, and reluctantly, found myself out in the singles world again. Even as I was becoming more stable in my new role as a single person, I was still hesitant about "getting out there" again. The thought of meeting someone new was scary, and uncomfortable.The information in this book helped me look at my future relationship(s) in a different light. I am not quite as scared, and even a bit excited...some days.I came across this book in the Recommended Reading section of "Get Over the Guilt" by Macy Kayne. "Get Over the Guilt", as well as some of the other books Ms. Kayne recommends were very helpful for me.

The information is helpful, but it is definitely aimed at a much older divorcee or widow. As a 30-something divorcee with no children, who is the one who initiated the divorce, I found much of the information to be fairly mundane. By and large it seems like it was written of a woman who more or less gave up her independence and identity for her family. While there certainly was some helpful information and guidance, very little of it was earth shattering or particularly relevant for me.

WOW! Nicely done. Getting Naked Again is not just about the fear we have of "getting naked again", it's so much more. It is for the divorcee, the widow/widower, the gay man who can't seem to find the right guy, the forever single woman who can't seem to find the right guy. It reads for all of us who want love and are seemingly searching in the wrong places, or not searching at all. I don't normally order a book like this, but I was feeling desperate. I'm so glad I did! I'm sending it to my ever beautiful, high maintenance friend, who just became single, and to my gay guy friend who is so handsome, yet believes that he is destined to live life alone. I am also sending it to my beautiful friend whose husband passed away unexpectedly last fall. This book is good for our lonely souls. This book has a great amount of depth. Getting Naked Again keeps you interested with the dialog and is filled with so much more than I ever expected. It is written professionally and from the heart.

I talked to many people I knew about various chapters of this book. When I told them the title, they were a bit skeptical. It does cover physical intimacy but it is much, much more about being vulnerable and re-aquiring an attitude of hope when it comes to relationships.Some of the ideas were familiar to me but was explained in a more in-depth complete way than other books. It is easy to read, thought-provoking and very useful. I passed it on yesterday to my mom to read since she lost her husband last year.

After a long tern, marriage the thought of getting naked with a stranger was unthinkable. Low self esteem, and poor body image adds to the scary thought of a new relationship and how to go about it. I found this funny and enlightening, and while it hasn't happened yet I am better prepared if it does.

I am an experienced LRCC and PS user but the programs are so complex that I need a periodic refresher. This book fit the bill nicely. I bought the ebook version, loaded it into my ipad and I propped the reader in front of me while I did the exercises on my computer. I find this arrangement much easier than trying to maneuver a large paper volume with one hand and working the computer with the other. Most of the exercises are well thought out and were easy to follow but I'm not sure I would recommend this to a beginner.

Now that Adobe offers the Creative Cloud Photography Plan, which includes a monthly subscription to both Photoshop and Lightroom, for under $10 a month, many photographers are wondering how to fit these two programs together for the best possible images. The two can be integrated so that each does what it can do best. Lightroom is great for global adjustments (as well as other functions like cataloging and slide shows) while Photoshop allows combining images, local adjustments and retouching. My 6 year old boy loves these books! He asked me "Do you know who my favorite author is?", I answer "Troy Cummings", and he says with a big smile "You know it!". He also has read the first 15 or so of the Magic Tree House books, and he likes those, but he gets much much more excited to read the Notebook of Doom series.He started to write one of his own notebook of doom books... so this has definitely encouraged him to be more creative. The monsters aren't that terrible, but the books made him nervous a few times, and it was a good conversation starter for how monsters are not real, and how being scared/nervous is healthy, and what it means to brave/courageous.

I feel like it has pretty hard to find reading level appropriate books for my son that he gets excited about. When I found these Notebook of Doom books, I knew I had a winner! My son loves these books. He has all but one in his collection now. This series is tied for 1st (with Fanny K Stein series and Dog Man) as his favorite books to read. We started reading these together when he was in 1st grade, he started reading them more on his own entering 2nd grade & is now entering 3rd and has been reading them 100% on his own for some time now. He connects with the characters and LOVES all the silly situations they get themselves into. I highly recommend these books.

It arrived yesterday on release day, and we couldn't put it down! Absolutely wonderful addition to the series. A big surprise inside! My kids and I love The Notebook Of Doom!

This was another fun read for me and my 6YO. We love this series and seeing the characters being developed is really fun. He's already excited for the next book even though we don't know what it is or when it will come out!

My kids (ages 6 & 8) love this series. This is the only series that they will occasionally remember to ask if the latest book is out yet. They get so excited when the latest book comes in the mail!

My six year old says "It is awesome! It's just awesome, yo!" We have read all the books in this series and pre-ordered the next one. Enjoy!

All of the Notebook of Doom books are a must read! My grandchildren loved them and it inspired them to write their own journals!

Want to know what the greatest comic run is in the history of DC comics? It’s Alan Moore’s three years writing Swamp Thing. Yeah, I know. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and art is subjective but read this series and tell me I’m wrong. I had the wonderful fortune to read these comics as they were being published and looking back now I’m not even sure how it happened. I was strictly a superhero comic fan and Swamp Thing was out of my genre but I was probably influenced by the buzz about Alan Moore. I can remember going to the drug store with my grandfather, when he was still alive, picking up Swamp Thing and being mesmerized. I can remember every storyline in the three year span but none more so than the Monkey King featured in this first volume. It’s one of the most horrifying comic stories ever and cemented Alan Moore’s place as a force to be reckoned with in American comics.What Alan Moore did was look at Swamp Thing and find that his origin made no sense so he completely reinvented the character. At the time I wasn’t super thrilled but looking back it was absolutely the right thing to do. Swamp Thing was no longer a man turned into a monster, he was a plant who thought he was a man. One of the most indelible moments in a sea of indelible moments was when the Swamp Thing fully accepted who he was. During a battle between The Monkey King and Ertigan the Demon, Abigail Cable urges Swamp Thing to flee as there are two monsters and Swamp Thing replies ‘Three Monsters… Run’. 33 years after that line was written I’ve always remembered it. I can remember so many specific lines and particular pieces of art and I’m the type of person who can barely remember comics I read a month ago. That is how hard these stories hit.It would be a terrible miscarriage of justice to not include Stephen Bissette and John Totleben along with Moore as the reasons for success. Alan Moore’s writing is so good that even when paired with artists of modest skills *ahem* Eddie Campbell *ahem* he can still produce a masterpiece but in this case he couldn’t have asked for better artists. Not only are Bissette and Totleben fantastic artists they’re skills perfectly match Alan Moore’s horror writing. Dare I say they outdo even the legendary Bernie Wrightson? There is such an incredible creepiness and otherworldliness to the art and again they shine no greater than in the Monkey King story line. The Monkey King is meant to be the literal embodiment of fear and if you’ve ever read this story you will never forget the image of true horror.If you’ve never read Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing do yourself a huge favor and read every issue. There is NOTHING like it being produced today and Moore puts to shame any modern writers. In fact Alan Moore today cannot match the work he produced in the 80’s. It can be argued whether or not Swamp Thing is his best ever but I would definitely say that this was written during Moore’s peak. This is the greatest era of comic’s greatest writer. Read Swamp Thing, read Watchmen, read Miracleman and prepare to be changed. These are life altering comics and I was privileged to read all of them when they were first published.Let me finish off with a brief rant. What do Green Arrow by Kevin Smith, Identity Crisis and All-Star Batman and Robin have in common? They all have Absolute Editions. Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing does not have an Absolute Edition. Swamp Thing does not have an Omnibus Edition and currently no hard cover edition being sold on Amazon. How is that right? Swamp Thing deserves the royal treatment not some afterthought effort. Swamp Thing is not some historical DC footnote. It is a series that has continued off and on for over 40 years including up and until today. There IS an audience. Do it DC and make it right.

Where to begin? I had first experienced the story of Alan (aka: Swamp Thing) in the 1982 film adaptation starring the well endowed woman of most notably 70's sitcom "Maude" and of films "Creepshow" and John Carpenter's "Escape from New York" Adrian Barbeau.Now because the film introduced me first on the character of DC's ST, it did not inject interest in checking out the books since I felt Marvel's "Man-Thing" was the original "muck of yuck." But it was always in the back of my mind of probably taking a stab at it someday.Well, after the success of the tv show version it still did not hit me to view the book history, BUT now I'm a full fledge fan and DAMN PROUD OF IT TOO. From the beautiful illustrations to the creepy, yet piercing narrative and/or the cast of multi-layered characters of goth-ridden and psychological paradoxes is a work of art, in more detail and abstract imagination to enter into this world as a participant then a reader only.The utilization and integration of guest stars were well chosen and executed as support but never to overshadow ST, such as: The Justice League, The Demon/Jason Blood and even Arcane. I was really taken by the explanation of what ST is and how its origin is reinterpreted with more empathy and compassion then just as another human casualty.I'm looking forward to reading the rest of Alan Moore's take on this life of plants and vegetation for a long time!

I had no familiarity with swamp thing in terms of origin or his associated case of characters. I only got these books because Moore wrote them.With that in mind, the collection starts with issue 20 which Moore authored but does have some hang over story lines and a lot of characters I was unfamiliar with. They are clArified further is future volumes but it does make the first volume difficult to comprehend on first reading.But the book is amazing and I would highly recommend to any comic book fan.

This takes the Swamp Thing story in a direction I didn't see coming. Originally released when I was quite young, my first attempt to read it was around the age of 9 in the form of a graphic novel picked up by one of my parents at a garage sale.Needless to say I was too young to understand what Mr. Moore was conveying to his audience. But that didn't stop me from enjoying somewhat the Swamp Time movie and loving the Swamp Thing television show that aired around that same time.Reading this today gives me a better appreciation for comic book writing. I mean, I knew that writing was important, but seeing it really shine in this way is just something truly masterful.I hear there are five more volumes by Moore. I'm not sure when, but I'll be reading those.

Though this wasn't writer Alan Moore's first great comic book work, both V For Vendetta and Marvelman, among others came before, it was his jaw dropping writing on Swamp Thing which perhaps more than anything else propelled him to the level of elite writers in the comic book medium.Aided tremendously by the artwork of Steve Bissette and John Totleben, who joined the series with issue 16 (get those pre-Alan Moore issues as well, they're very much worth your while), this first collected volume features the first eight issues of their collaboration.A highlight is the very second issue presented, "The Anatomy Lesson", which offered an alternate/new origin for the Swamp Thing that radically changed the character without altering any of the past stories presented, including the incredible Len Wein/Berni Wrightson original 10 issue run from the early 1970's.A great start to a great series of issues. Highly recommended.

This account of Carmine Persico's life of crime kept my interest throughout. He came across as human. I wish there had been more about his day to day life, relationships with family and such. But people are dead or not talking. For all that, it wasn't just a list of facts strung together. The book is interesting.Persico is smart, but doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes. He's in jail, his fourth decade there. His kids, nephews, brothers--everyone behind bars. For years and years. I wonder if he ever asked himself if life in organized crime was worth the results.

Carmine Persico is one of those rare gangsters that make it to his 80s. The life of a gangster usually results in an early grave or a life in prison. Persico currently resides in a rather cushy prison in North Carolina. I did like the description on the hit Persico and Crazy Joey Gallo along with two others engineered on on "The Mad Hatter", Albert Anastasia, "The Lord High Executioner." Persico and Gallo were the shooters as I've read in other books as well. I did find it hard to keep track of all of the various gangsters in the book several of which I had never heard of. The trial and conviction of Carmine Persico is covered very well in the book. Persico acted as his own lawyer and the judge did praise his misguided intelligence. It's too bad Carmine didn't apply himself in a lawful endeavor. Other Persico family members were involved in crime as well.This book is a worthy addition to anyone's crime library. I'm somewhat surprised it took this long for a book on this gangster to materialize.

One of the best mob books ever. Writing style and research make this book both informative and entertaining. It was nice to read a mob book about a person not frequently discussed

Good book adding details not found elsewhere. At first read like any other old Mafia book, but found its legs and drew me in as a reader. Overall one of the better Mafia books published

Read the damn thing you mutts. Frank Dimatteo wrote an excellent well documented book on one of the most important figures in LCN history

lots of great inside info about the Colombo Family and Carmine's rise to become Boss. nothing shocking in terms of new info, but still some great bits that I had not heard before.
