Timothy Masters received a PhD in mathematical statistics with a specialization in numerical computing. Since then he has continuously worked as an independent consultant for government and industry. His early research involved automated feature detection in high-altitude photographs while he developed applications for flood and drought prediction, detection of hidden missile silos, and identification of threatening military vehicles. Later he worked with medical researchers in the development of computer algorithms for distinguishing between benign and malignant cells in needle biopsies. For the last twenty years he has focused primarily on methods for evaluating automated financial market trading systems. I really wanted to like these books but the quality is just too low. TM thinks that just b/c some C++ code is included that the writing doesn't matter. The explanations of core concepts are terrible. There are many typos and confusing sentences and even whole paragraphs that just don't make sense. Much of the content for the other two books just copies content word for word from each other. There is very little in the other two volumes. Literally, whole sections are copied and pasted into Vol 2 and Vol 3. There a very few diagrams of anything and the diagrams and graphs that are included are of such low quality as to not be useful. I really want to support self publishing but these books are basically C++ code documentation. With all the DNN frameworks available such as Caffe, Torch, Theano, TensorFlow, CNTK there really isn't much point in studying this guys C++ code. Not to mention there is cuDNN with many of these core operations implemented.There are many good resources on the internet that are of much higher quality. Checkout Michael Nielsen's free on-line book, also deep learning dot net has many good resources. Additionally NVIDIA offers self-study course for deep learning (just google) and also their deep learning institute (again just google).

Still working my way through this, trying to learn CUDA an OpenCL. It is a good example of an application of neural network application.

This gem is the first practical book I've came across for implementing machine learning at a professional level. This book is for practitioners, who want full control of the process along with speed optimizations, which you lose when loading a library like theano, tensorflow, caffe, etc. This is rare information that's incredibly useful for those that have moved beyond theory, or are trying to.

Very parctical book, containing large volume of code.Provided code fragments are parts of larger project, so you'll not be able to use it by copy-paste way, but it is not a disadvantage, because it makes you to read theory carefully and work by yourself.

This is a good resource for learning Deep Belief Nets, especially considering the limited resources available online on this topic.

This book is absolutely amazing. There are people that use prebuilt machine learning libraries and then there are those that actually make those libraries. As a result from studying this book my machine learning models have not only dramatically improved in accuracy but they have dramatically improved in execution speed as well. This is an absolute must have for any machine learning / artificial intelligence practitioner.

First, I must disclose that I have known Dr. Masters for 20 years and have collaborated with him on various projects including a book we co-authored.(Statistically Sound Machine Learning for Algorithmic Trading of Financial Instruments). In addition he was a crucial adviser on my book Evidence Based Technical Analysis. He is also a friend.With that said, Dr. Masters is a person of integrity, humility, intellectual honesty and competence. When he became interested in Deep Belief Networks, also known as Deep Learning Nets, I took that as a signal that this was a truly important development in the field of machine learning and I’d better get my admittedly slow human intellect exposed to DBNs.Amazon allows you to look inside the book so I won't reiterate the table of contents or outline what the book contains. Interested readers can do that themselves.The key point for interested readers is this: deep belief networks represent an important advance in machine learning due to their ability to autonomously synthesize features. Feature engineering, the creating of candidate variables from raw data, is the key bottleneck in the application of machine learning to any field. If feature engineering is done well, even a relatively weak model, such a multiple linear regression can produce a useful predictive model. If done poorly, even the most powerful machine learning methods will fail. Thus feature engineering is the "without-which-not" of success. Of particular importance is that the feature engineering conducted by a DBN is performed in an unsupervised fashion ( no reference to the target variable). Thus if it takes a DBN numerous layers to self-organize the critical problem features, there is no risk of over-fitting was would occur if the target variable were to be considered during this phase of model training. The target variable is only considered by a DBN after feature engineering is complete. Of course this threatens the key role currently played by "domain experts" upon whom the feature engineering task currently falls. These people may find themselves on the same unemployment line as truck-drivers put out of work by self-driving 18 wheelers, and tax advisors whose job has been usurped by IBM’s Watson computer.What this book does is bring you up to speed in this very exciting area of machine learning. Background material is written in an intuitive fashion that allows the non-expert reader to grasp the big ideas. A disturbing story line - and I was hooked immediately. There are several characters and at first I was getting worried about how to keep them all straight. After a few chapters I realized it wasn't necessary to keep them straight which helped me enjoy the book even more. This was the book of choice for our recent book club and it sparked lots of conversation.Like many, I have Amazon set up to confirm when items are purchased, shipped, delivered. It was (and still is) funny to me that when I received updates that "Nothing" was purchased, "Nothing" was shipped, "Nothing" was delivered. This bit of irony is absolutely fitting for this particular book where "everything" and "nothing" are virtual characters in the story.

I loved this book from beginning to end because of the author's understanding of human behavior and how collective thought can lead people to do the most vile atrocities. The story takes place in a small town where young teenagers try to deal with one of their peers who seems to have lost belief in all meaning and climbs up a tree and stays there throughout the novel hollering phrases that irritate the rest but somehow are reflective and inspire common sense.

I started reading and reluctantly got up to get a granola bar and use the restroom, otherwise I was glued to every single page for 3 hours. Yes, this is a haunting and disturbing book. Yes, it is totally out of most people's comfort zones but for those of us who have oddly felt like we'd like to climb into a tree and watch it all go by....well, I related in some ways, was shocked in others, completely horrified at times but could see that this is LIFE as it's all happening now. Insert different characters, different places, add some conflict and some unkind words, mix it all up and you have war, crime and everything that happens everyday everywhere. We should not be so shocked. Best book I've read in a long, long time. Unforgettable-

I just finished reading this book. I am flummoxed. The good sort of flummoxed. I suspect I will find myself rereading this book every few years and will get something different from it each time. Not sure I will ever entirely decide what to make of it. Neat.

This is supposed to be a book for 12 and up but it's pretty heavy and disturbing. It's by a Danish author and translated into English. A 13-year-old boy decides life has no meaning so what is the point of school, work, dating, or anything. A group of his classmates want to prove him wrong so they start the "heap of meaning" in which each of them must add their most meaningful possession. Each kid chooses something for someone else to add and the choices get more horrible as the book goes on. I could see this book opening quite a discussion with teens--for young teens, they would need to be pretty mature.

Left me with an odd feeling. Disturbing yet enthralling, like some sort of weird, beautiful art piece. Not for the squeamish. I personally love this sort of thing, but I can imagine some people feeling frustrated and sickened by the book's pessimistic message. Has a faint 'Lord of the Flies' quality- I love LOTF, by the way! Very interesting. Although ultimately a very grim story, I found it darkly humorous at times. If you like that sort of thing, you'll enjoy it. There were deeply disturbing moments, however. The writing style was effective. Overall, an interesting book that left me feeling something I've never quite felt before.

Paola Quintavalle was born in Rome, Italy. She has worked with kids and in the world of books in a variety of contexts. She has held classroom workshops based on Bruno Munari’s methods and ideas on book construction. As the book expresses, this tradition of the Gnostic order of St. Mary Magdalene is an oral tradition, just like the Catholic Church or the outer and un-spiritual church as they call it, handed down it's beliefs and teachings orally, same with this one. It claims to have originated directly from the secret teachings of Jesus or Yeshua as they call him by his Aramaic name and that of St. Mary Magdalene. As a Catholic myself I will admit there are some really abstract ideas that will make you raise your eyebrow and say to yourself "what the heck did I just read?" However, I'm not going to bash Gnosticism here, I am fascinated by it's teachings and it's writings, and it really makes me wonder sometimes, "how much do we really know in the end?" We only know what very little the bible actually tells us of things, so you can only sit back and read this book with awe and fascination as I do. There are various tales and legends about St. Mary Magdalene in this book, tells the story of her early life before meeting Yeshua (Jesus) and her many sayings and teachings scripture versus in her Gospel. I love these types of books, regardless if the Church calls these teachings heresy, I still read these books with great fascination and awe, sometimes they will say things that will just seem to hit the mark in your heart that will leave you saying to yourself "I know this isn't what the Church teaches, but for some reason, I feel that this resonates with my heart." If you're looking for something unique and refreshing you cannot go wrong with this book!!

The book is a fairly decent compilation of Gnostic themed stories and legends about Mary Magdalene, as well as some meditation exercises. The stories themselves range from early legend to near modern times. Tau Malachi emphasizes, if you make it through to the conclusion - or understand Gnostic themes - that the purpose isn't to convey fact through the stories, but to provide lessons through stories and legends to be meditated on and contemplated.If your interest ranges toward Gnostic spirituality, the book is an interesting collection of legends, stories and meditations. The influence of the sacred feminine on individual and collective spirituality is central to the book, and somewhat effectively conveyed. If you are looking for researched, scholarly or orthodox examination of the Mary Magdalene tradition, this is only tangentially useful for exposure to the legends (though they are not cited by source in the book) and little else.

I could really relate to Tau Malachi's experience, having seen the Lady in Red as a teenager and I am now 64..Tau writes an experience about her as having been raped, kidnapped and forced into prostitution in Babylon, which happens to millions of women and children, she used her experiences and position to obtain wealth(she dressed, wore jewelry, wore perfumes and oils, she became the favorite of the Elite) went back to her home and met Jesus on the way and he worked with her to return her soul to the way she was before her terrible experience, I wondered why she was 27 when they married but, this explains it..I have also read other written material that brought out her sordid experiences but, she used them to walk beside Jesus with more knowledge of the world then any other descipleAlso this explains why she had so much Power over women because she could teach them to expand themselves to being able to walk above their lowered positions, can you imagine what she learned as a prostitue to teach other women.And yes, the other Apostles did not accept her except, Thomas, Bartholomew, and PhillipAll reference to her and writings by these Apostles were omitted from the bibleI feel she earned her right to walk above the others at the side of Jesus , and possibly taught Jesus a few things

The stories are breathtaking, the 250 sayings are profound and take the gospels to a whole new level. It's about time we started re-thinking our spirituality through the lens of our twentieth century minds!This book not only re-envisions Jesus' message, it re-envisions our current world paradigms and asks us some serious questions about where we are going to go next with our spirituality. I think it has become crystal clear to most of us that going back into the patriarchal mindset isn't the right answer, nor is going forward by cutting our roots out from under us. This book re-envisions by being well-rooted in the tradition of Jesus and his message, but at the same time re-envisions and calls us to question our current paradygms. This book is what I was waiting for.

I collect books on Interior Design, but they have to be extraordinary if they are to become part of my library and home office. I am a designer, and the daughter of an exceptional designer himself. We were taught how to "see" by my father and somehow learned the art of balance and scale, authenticity and the importance of adding the unexpected, when and how to break the rules and how to bring charm to rooms that don't offer that up easily. This book does all of that in spades. My heart races each time I sit and scan photos of this remarkable book's beautiful design. I bought an extra copy for my coffee table and even bought a third copy requested by a friend who came by for tea as she reminded me of her birthday the following week. We giggled at the time and now find ourselves calling one another over the phone for an afternoon break with this book in hand discussing things each of us discovered on our own. I cannot recommend this book enough, especially if you lean more towards timeless traditional and true elegance. The book"s designers pay special attention to finishes and know precisely when to stop.

I absolutely love this book. I found every image and written word inspiring. It's full of beautiful (rather grand) homes, that still feel so warm and inviting. If you love classic/ traditional interiors with a "quiet palette" then you will love this book.

Great book. Photographs were beautiful. The stories about the houses and why the type of decor was used was also quite interesting.

If you love reading about interior design and its processes, you will love this book. The authors take you step by step through eight homes that they have designed---all have neutral backgrounds allowing the color to come from the art, rugs, and fabrics. They are all exquisitely timeless and comfortable. You will learn the "whys" of the design decisions made by these talented design partners. I am two-thirds of the way through the book and am reading every last word and loving it!! I won't tell you how many design/architectural books I own that have not been "read"!
