#213,908 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I sat down with the intent of detailed and thorough reading, but by the second chapter I was accelerating through, skimming quickly and finding the same discursive, repetitive and not very original ideas. I wanted to like it given that scenario planning is something of a preoccupation with me, and I warmed to the avuncular style, but I couldn't help but shake the image of The Graduate ("plastics!").Basically: read a lot from disparate sources, confront biases, constrain your futures to a manageable number.Paradoxically, the unique challenge of our age is not a lack of information but, with the constraints on resources and time, knowing what to ignore (like this book).

The Art of the Long View by Peter Schwartz is mainly a training guide for scenario planning. It does not give step-by-step instructions without the reader having to go through the whole book. The book is an easy read but starts out in the first chapter or two seeming like an info commercial trying to set the foundation of the product right before the viewer (or reader) changes the channel. This foundation of Schwartz’ background and case studies, particularly in the oil industry, are referenced throughout the rest of the book and are necessary before the reader really starts getting into it. Schwartz did a great job in his case study examples explaining how one has to pull the past historical data of events for expectation of what could happen on the three scenario paths that can be taken. The reason for stating “could happen” is that Schwartz made it clear to the reader that scenario planning is not a prediction of the future but merely a tool to use to drive your decisions and prepare for what could happen from the worst extreme to the best extreme outcome. What are the big issues and how does one go about using filters to overcome obstacles for what’s important? These are skills that have to be learned by some but may be a natural instinct by others. Schwartz also mentions that one should narrow the scenarios’ to no more than three as they may overlap and to write the scenarios out as if you were writing a book. He also mentioned that the “driving forces, predetermined elements, and critical uncertainties” must be looked at in order to give “structure to our exploration of the future”. Among the driving forces any event of “society, technology, economy, politics, and environment” can change the course of the future journey. What I liked mostly about the book is how Schwartz went back in time with the readers to the 1960 – 1990’s (my era) and explained the events and how they effected other events socially, politically, economically, and even the drive on the environmental issues. He really did a great job connecting some of the dot’s that drove our economics at the time. It was educational and the younger adults could benefit from this history. His analysis on the teenagers, particularly the baby boomers, was right on target. The baby boomers made major social changes and there are the “global teenagers” that will also make an impact but maybe not as big economically since some of those groups are from poorer countries. (I think I will check into some stocks in the medical industry and hopefully get out in time before so many hospitals and medical facilities are no longer needed as the baby boomers grow older… Schwartz book just makes me think is all…) The last item in my review is the technology scenarios mentioned in the book. One has to continually remind themselves when the book was originally written; in 1990. I don’t believe there were too many updates, if any, to the 1996 books printed. Schwartz made some pretty good scenarios in the book regarding the virtual world but maybe one network overlooked is the wireless market which has really played a large part in technological advances since the book was written. Perhaps Schwartz should write a second part called, “The Art of the Longview: The Past 25 Years and Planning for the Infinite Future”. The history for his next scenario would cover the dot.com era, events on 9/11 and the aftermath, at least two major hurricanes, iPhone and Smart phone market, the drive of converting analog to digital, the first black president, impact to the Japan tsunami, the capture of Saddam Hussien and Bin Laden, affordable healthcare, new regulations, gun control, Washington and Colorado passing sale of marijuana, our borders, how the Cowboy’s haven’t won but one playoff game since the mid-90’s (JK), etc…. etc…, etc… There is a lot to write about for Schwartz that has happened in the past 25 years along with comparing his scenarios’ giving new ones.

I belief that I possess a strong and reliable gut-feel or instinct. I also have a good knack for organising and quantifying information to help me in the process of decision making. Together these factors which have helped me through many decisions, from moderately difficult to life changing decisions, such as immigration. But Peter Schwartz's book takes planning for the future to a much higher level. Subtitled "Planning for the future in an uncertain world", in "The art of the long view" Schwartz illustrates his own successful recipe for practical futurism. He outlines a "scenario" approach for developing a strategic vision. This approach involves developing 2 - 4 varying scenarios. The approach is based upon a series of steps for developing each scenario, preparing for the likelihood each scenario, and recognising early on which one (or more than one) scenario is actually eventuating, so that appropriate steps can be taken.Although the proposed scenarios are to be presented in a narrative form (which may make some people uncomfortable), the "Long View" approach is quite methodical (though it could perhaps have been presented in a more organised fashion). Apart from that, the approach holds much advantage. I expected a full-on business book glorifying globalisation, knowing that Schwartz had been involved with several multi-nationals like the Royal Dutch Shell Oil Company. I was therefore pleasantly surprised with Schwartz's environmental leanings and his inclusion of the ecological impacts of decisions in scenarios.Taking into account the success rate of teams in which Schwartz has been involved with in the past, the scenario developing strategy definitely seems to me to have much merit. (It would be interesting to see how his predictions for 2005 turns out - in 3 years time). Now if we could only get politicians to read this book and look past their re-election windows. Highly recommended.

This is a must read for those interested in strategic thinking, strategic visioning, and in moving beyond biases and assumptions to imagine the future. Schwartz noted, "I wrote this book [to show individuals] how to begin using a method for investigating important decisions" (p. xiii). He continued to note that the point isn't to pick one future but instead to " make strategic decisions that will be sound for all plausible futures. . . . Scenario planning is about making choices today with an understanding of how they might turn out" (pp. xiv, 4). Such an important discussion and aspect of imagining new possibilities! In an appendix Schwartz identifies the steps to developing scenarios.

A fine read on the foundations and methods of scenario planning. I learned a great deal about the why of this type of planning, not just the how. It was a bit surrealistic, since it was published before Sept. 11, 2001. Some of the possible futures of U.S. society suggested in the book, in hindsight, appeared naive or quaint. Yet, even then, it was instructive reading, because it made for a great example of how unforeseen events actually do change the scenario planning process in real ways. I enjoyed the book, evidenced by the fact that I started and finished it while on a Caribbean cruise. It kept my attention even then.

Review

In these exuberant, surprising, joyous, gorgeous pages, artist and writer Misha Maynerick Blaise celebrates THIS PHENOMENAL LIFE with facts that will amaze and artwork that will delight. What a great way to reawaken our connections with the universe! (Sy Montgomery, author of The Soul of the Octopus, finalist for the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction)“This book lies in the ever-disappearing intersection between beauty and truth. Every single person I know would love it to pieces.” —Ella Frances Sanders, author of the New York Times bestseller Lost in TranslationI have a new favorite book in the universe and it’s called This Phenomenal Life. It explodes with the wonders of creation and the beauty of being alive. (Rainn Wilson, actor, author)'Blaise’s characters are almost all adults, but older children as well as grown-ups may enjoy this lovely graphic book, which offers a sweet-spirited reminder that all human beings are more alike than different, and that the entire cosmos is interconnected in ways we’re only beginning to comprehend.' **Starred review** (Publishers Weekly)Blaise (My Wondrous Cloud Odyssey) provides illustrations for a trove of scientific facts to demonstrate how closely humans are intertwined with the natural world. Playing with both meanings of the word 'phenomenal,' Blaise depicts dark skies dotted with stars, swirling currents, riotous flowers, and creatures from microorganisms to elephants—a vibrant visual world shared with ethnically and culturally diverse humans. Gentle whimsy prevails: a bewigged avian playing a harp illustrates an aspect of birdsong that’s similar to human music, while two people shyly sitting far apart are yet connected by their 'microbial clouds.' Addressing such wide-ranging topics as the Big Bang, plant neurotransmitters, insect husbandry, hidden water footprints, and 'mitochondrial Eve,' Blaise encourages a sense of wonder at the phenomenal world. 'Even in an office with no windows,' she writes, 'every breath we take contains trillions of air molecules that cycle through the world and connect us with life on Earth.' Blaise’s characters are almost all adults, but older children as well as grown-ups may enjoy this lovely graphic book, which offers a sweet-spirited reminder that all human beings are more alike than different, and that the entire cosmos is interconnected in ways we’re only beginning to comprehend. **starred review** (Publishers Weekly)Children and adults alike will appreciate Blaise's vibrant illustrations paired with a bevy of scientific facts. Whether they be atoms or our enormous universe, these eye-catching depictions detail how closely connected we are with the natural world. (Green Living Magazine)

The Dangerous Book for Boys, by Conn Iggulden

Amazon.com Review

Equal parts droll and gorgeous nostalgia book and heartfelt plea for a renewed sense of adventure in the lives of boys and men, Conn and Hal Iggulden's The Dangerous Book for Boys became a mammoth bestseller in the United Kingdom in 2006. Adapted, in moderation, for American customs in this edition (cricket is gone, rugby remains; conkers are out, Navajo Code Talkers in), The Dangerous Book is a guide book for dads as well as their sons, as a reminder of lore and technique that have not yet been completely lost to the digital age. Recall the adventures of Scott of the Antarctic and the Battle of the Somme, relearn how to palm a coin, tan a skin, and, most charmingly, wrap a package in brown paper and string. The book's ambitions are both modest and winningly optimistic: you get the sense that by learning how to place a splint or write in invisible ink, a boy might be prepared for anything, even girls (which warrant a small but wise chapter of their own). Inside The Dangerous Book for Boys Figure 8 Knot Sheet Bend Knot The Battle of Waterloo Questions for Conn Iggulden Conn and Hal Iggulden are two brothers who have not forgotten what it was like to be boys. Conn taught for many years before becoming one of the most admired and popular young historical novelists with his Emperor series, based on the life of Julius Caesar, and his newly embarked series on Genghis Khan, while Hal is a theater director. We asked Conn about their collaboration. Amazon.com: It's difficult to describe what a phenomenon The Dangerous Book for Boys was in the UK last year. When I would check the bestseller list on our sister site, Amazon.co.uk, there would be, along with your book, which spent much of the year at the top of the list, a half-dozen apparent knockoff books of similar boy knowledge. Clearly, you tapped into something big. What do you think it was? Iggulden: In a word, fathers. I am one myself and I think we've become aware that the whole "health and safety" overprotective culture isn't doing our sons any favors. Boys need to learn about risk. They need to fall off things occasionally, or--and this is the important bit--they'll take worse risks on their own. If we do away with challenging playgrounds and cancel school trips for fear of being sued, we don't end up with safer boys--we end up with them walking on train tracks. In the long run, it's not safe at all to keep our boys in the house with a Playstation. It's not good for their health or their safety. You only have to push a boy on a swing to see how much enjoys the thrill of danger. It's hard-wired. Remove any opportunity to test his courage and they'll find ways to test themselves that will be seriously dangerous for everyone around them. I think of it like playing the lottery--someone has to say "Look, you won't win--and your children won't be hurt. Relax. It won't be you." I think that's the core of the book's success. It isn't just a collection of things to do. The heroic stories alone are something we haven't had for too long. It isn't about climbing Everest, but it is an attitude, a philosophy for fathers and sons. Our institutions are too wrapped up in terror over being sued--so we have to do things with them ourselves. This book isn't a bad place to start. As for knockoff books--great. They'll give my son something to read that doesn't involve him learning a dull moral lesson of some kind--just enjoying an adventure or learning skills and crafts so that he has a feeling of competence and confidence--just as we have. Amazon.com: You made some changes for the U.S. edition, and I for one am sorry that you have removed the section on conkers, if only because it's such a lovely and mysterious word. What are (or what is) conkers? Iggulden: Horse chestnuts strung on a shoelace and knocked against one another until they shatter. In the entire history of the world, no one has ever been hurt by a conker, but it's still been banned by some British schools, just in case. Another school banned paper airplanes. Honestly, it's enough to make you weep, if I did that sort of thing, which I try not to. Reading Jane Austen is still allowed, however. Amazon.com: What knowledge did you decide was important to add for American boys? I notice in both editions you have an excellent and useful section on table football, as played with coins. Is paper football strictly an American pastime? I'm not sure I could have gotten through the fourth grade without it. Iggulden: I like knowing the details of battles, so Gettysburg and the Alamo had to go in, along with the Gettysburg address, stickball, state capitals, U.S. mountains, American trees, insects, U.S. historical timelines, and a lot of others. Navajo code talkers of WWII is a great chapter. It probably helps that I am a huge fan of America. It was only while rewriting for the U.S. that I realized how many positive references there already are. You have NASA and NASA trumps almost anything. As for paper football, ever since I thought of putting the book together, people keep saying things like "You have rockets in there, yes? Everyone loves rockets!" Paper football is the first American one, but there will be many others. No book in the world is long enough to put them all in--unless we do a sequel, of course. Amazon.com: Do you think The Dangerous Book for Boys is being read by actual boys, or only by nostalgic adults? Have you seen boys getting up from their Xboxes to go outside and perform first aid or tan animal skins or build go-carts? Iggulden: I've had a lot of emails and letters from boys who loved the book--as well as fathers. I've had responses from kids as young as ten and an old man of 87, who pointed out a problem with the shadow stick that we've since changed. The thing to remember is that we may be older and more cynical every year, but boys simply aren't. If they are given the chance to make a go-cart with their dad, they jump at it. Mine did. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to know the book is being used with fathers and sons together, trying things out. Nothing is more valuable to a boy than time with his dad, learning something fun--or something difficult. That's part of the attitude too. If it's hard, you don't make it easy, you grab it by the throat and hang on for as long as it takes. The book is often bought by fathers, of course. Their sons don't know Scott of the Antarctic is a great adventure story. How could they if it isn't taught any more? Good, heroic stories don't appear much in modern school curriculums--and then we wonder why boys don't seem interested. Amazon.com: And finally, on to the important questions: Should Pluto still be a planet? And what was the best dinosaur? Iggulden: Pluto is a planet. I know there are scientists who say it isn't, but it's big enough to be round and it has a moon, for crying out loud. Of course it's a planet. Give it ten years and they'll be agreeing with me again. As for the best dinosaur, it depends what you mean by best. For sheer perfection, it probably has to be the shark and the crocodile. Modern ones are smaller but their record for sheer survival is pretty impressive. I only hope humanity can do as well. The only thing that will stop us is worrying too much.

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8–Intentionally old-fashioned and politically incorrect, this eclectic collection addresses the undeniable boy-appeal of certain facts and activities. Dozens of short chapters, in fairly random order, cover a wide range of topics in conversational prose. Simple instructions for coin tricks and paper airplanes alternate with excerpts from history such as Famous Battles and facts about ancient wonders of the world and astronomy. The dangerous aspect is more apparent in such chapters as Making Cloth Fireproof, and Hunting and Cooking a Rabbit, but also applies to the overall premise that action is fun and can be worth the risks. A section on stickball, for instance, includes advice to possibly flee the vicinity in the event of a broken window. The information is appropriately concise. The knot-tying section, for example, sticks to five basic varieties with clear instructions and useful diagrams. Occasional topics such as Marbling Paper and Latin Phrases Every Boy Should Know may not fit the stereotypical interests of young males, but support the general theme of cultivating curiosity. The authors refer to their own experiences as they tested the activities, lending an appealing personal tone. Tongue-in-cheek humor emerges throughout, notably in eight bits of advice offered in the chapter called Girls. Already a best seller in England, this American edition features several adjustments, such as substituting The Declaration of Independence for Patron Saints of Britain. Both premise and content should appeal to many boys, and might be even more successful when nostalgic dads join in.–Steven Engelfried, Multnomah County Library, OR Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. My twin grandsons really like this book. However, they had a hard time finding things they wanted to show me. So, with a little help from the boys, I made an index for the book. Before purchasing the book some time ago for my son, I read the "1 star" reviews first. The complaints there fell generally into one of two camps. Either it wasn't edgy enough or it was like a watered down version of the boy scout manual. Shameful as it is to say, I didn't purchase it based on these reviews. I am an eagle scout and was brought up with a love for knowledge and exploration and yet, I hated much of the scouting program. To my mind it was too diluted and attempted at every turn to turn the mantra "safety first" into "the whole world should be bubble-wrapped but isn't, so don't ever risk anything". Childhood is the time to make mistakes while the stakes is still small and the consequences are generally mild. But due in large part to the litigious and politically obsequious climate in our society, I find myself chafing at the restrictions of our pretend adventures. A watered-down scout handbook was the last thing I wanted. I happened upon a copy in-store and took the time to peruse its pages. I was astonished by the broad expanse of the knowledge it contained. While the book certainly caters to younger minds, I found myself giddy that there were other people in the world who valued the skills of bushcraft as well as the sciences, literature and history. But most of all I found that the book captured an overall narative of the virtues of manliness, which are, contrary to popular opinion, patience, kindness and humility. This narrative is well evinced by a quote inscribed in the first few pages: "Don't swagger. The boy who swaggers - like the man who swaggers - has little else that he can do. He is a cheap-Jack crying his own paltry wares. It is the empty tin that rattles most".I have only returned to leave this review as I needed a copy for my youngest boy as well.

I bought this book for my 8 yr old grandson. He didn't seem too impressed, I guess the new generation likes the electronic toys more than books. I had a chance to look through it myself and I thought it was a pretty neat book, but then again that's grandpa talking. Perhaps later in his life, if he holds onto it, he'll appreciate information on tying knots and other more traditional boys stuff.

Got this for my 15 year old brother as a Christmas gift. I had read the Daring Book for Girls years ago and really enjoyed this. Before I gave it to him, I read it and was surprised at how well-written and informative this book was. It was also, from an aesthetic standpoint, a beautifully made book, with a thick hardcover and marbled front and back pages. My little brother ended up really enjoying this book and trying the projects in the book. He has never been a strong reader, but he ended up being engrossed in this book. There are very detailed pictures that explain most of the things going on in this book. If you have a son/daughter, you cannot go wrong with this book. I am thinking about buying this book for myself!Ages ~10(for advanced readers) - 18 or older

I was given a copy of this book over a decade ago (the British version) and loved it for myself! I now have 29 nieces and nephews - each received a copy on their 9th birthday. It's become a bit of a tradition, and they all love it. My one year old already peruses the pages with his dad nightly, and is getting pretty good at making paper airplanes. I highly recommend this book to learn general life skills in a way that kids (and adults) can follow and enjoy!

Delicious journey filled with discovery and love. Both of these MC's are smart, capable men, driven career wise and neither had much luck with relationships. These guys find their connection intense and they explore their dynamics of submission and dominance in the bedroom. There is very light BDSM play explored as they find what works for them.Elliot and Caleb are so steamy together and their connection creates a beautiful compatibility in their lives. I enjoyed how these guys talked and worked together to find their way. i also really enjoyed the description of the country-side and the people in the story. i would love to visit Alaska and this was a delightful peek into a beautiful land. The supporting characters were interesting and i hope we get to see more of them. This is book one of the Submission Series and i am looking forward to the next story. One of my favorite quotes of the book is:'We would converge upon the same spot, wherever that place might fall in the universe. At the end of the day, we would be together. We would find each other. Now and again throughout the span of space and time. His soul belonged to mine and mine to his. ... '

Elliot was in Alaska laying the groundwork at the research station and Caleb was the pilot bringing in some of his supplies. When Elliot literally fell for Caleb, it triggered something in Caleb that he wanted to explore. Neither man was looking for love, but they both fell hard and fast. I laughed when both Elliot and Caleb thought it was a great idea to sabotage equipment in order for them to stay together longer. Daniel was sweet enough to make himself scarce so Caleb and Elliot could really discuss their future without an audience.'I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.'

This is a sizzling hot romance of not just opposites attract but opposites attract then combust in white hot melting heat.I’ll quickly cut to the chase. Elliot is a grad student sent to a remote research lab in Alaska by his flakey boss, Dr. Murphy. He meets Caleb, a ruggedly handsome Alaskan pilot who comes to Elliot’s rescue. How you may ask? Well, you’ll find out when you read the book. Let’s just put it this way. They meet and then.....WOW!This book has all the traits I’ve come to love about this author. He takes you to a place, in this case it’s Alaska, where I have visited by the way, which he describes in perfect detail (flora, fauna and food = oh my!) like he’s not only been there but he’s lived there. He then includes an array of local characters to support the star attractions, namely Elliot and Caleb.Everything works in this book and I can’t wait to read what follows in this series.

My first Jason Collins book.. This was closer to 3.5 stars than 4...I absolutely loved how descriptive he wrote about the scenery of the Alaskan wild. I could envision the view perfectly through his description. This is definitely not only an insta love but...perhaps requires a little suspension of belief. Do men suddenly decide they are gay (without ever having that thought before) late in their lives? I suppose it is possible...it just seemed a bit much for me that this connection was made so perfectly without a person having an issue within themselves. But there was plenty of steamy connections and an HEA which I enjoyed.

This was an entertaining story, nice happy ending, but not tense/intense enough for me. Lots of good feelings but didn't make me sit on the edge of my seat or want to keep reading to see what would happen next.

I really enjoyed this story between Caleb and Elliot. Even though is has d/s tendencies it still a very light and sweet love story. I really like stories like these that don't have a lot of drama and angst just two people who are in love and work together. I highly recommend this book!!!

I liked the show of respect the two showed for each other. Domination but with respect. Truthfully, I cannot recall anything in the story that I did not like, and I am very critical. Reading the story was a highly enjoyable experience.

3,5*PLEASE READ FIRST MY RATING SYSTEM!!!To my ratings (thanks to amazon I had to change it again and 'upgrade' it a little bit.My old 3* is now a 3,5* and clicked with a 4* but in review marked as 3,5*):5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-Away-book like 'Jesse's Smile' and Joey' from Angelique Jurd, 'Save the kids' series from EM Leya or 'Liberty' from Seth King),it's like an A+4* - very good and will be often reread and is a WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises (like most of Andrew Grey books) it's like an A3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few times (most romances where you can enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in hospitals). I can recommend them definitively! It's like an B+3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader (2-3 times a year), it's like a B2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-reader (I wouldn't recommend it heartily, but it was ok) It's like a C-, D1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an absolute NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole line, dismissed, repeat the classIf you never read a D/s book before, just give it a try. It's very light D/s-theme in a sweet romance story!

About the Author

Dan Harrington began playing poker professionally in 1982. On the circuit he is known as Action Dan, an ironic reference to his solid but effective style. He has won several major no-limit hold em tournaments including the European Poker Championships (1995), the $2,500 No-Limit Hold em event at the 1995 World Series of Poker, and the Four Queens No-Limit Hold em Championship (1996). Dan began his serious games-playing with chess, where he quickly became a master and one of the strongest players in the New England area. In 1972 he won the Massachusetts Chess Championship, ahead of most of the top players in the area. In 1976 he started playing backgammon, a game which he also quickly mastered. He was soon one of the top money players in the Boston area, and in 1981 he won the World Cup of backgammon in Washington D.C., ahead of a field that included most of the world s top players. He first played in the $10,000 No-Limit Hold em Championship Event of the World Series of Poker in 1987. He has played in the championship a total of 15 times and has reached the final table in four of those tournaments, an amazing record. Besides winning the World Championship in 1995, he finished sixth in 1987, third in 2003, and fourth in 2004. In 2006 he finished second at the Doyle Brunson North American Championships at the Bellagio, while in 2007 he won the Legends of Poker tournament at the Bicycle Club. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest and most respected no-limit hold em players, as well as a feared opponent in both no-limit and limit hold em side games. He lives in Santa Monica where he is a partner in Anchor Loans, a real estate business. Bill Robertie has spent his life playing and writing about chess, backgammon, and now poker. He began playing chess as a boy, inspired by Bobby Fischer s feats on the international chess scene. While attending Harvard as an undergraduate, he became a chess master and helped the Harvard chess team win several intercollegiate titles. After graduation, he won a number of chess tournaments, including the United States Championship at speed chess in 1970. He also established a reputation at blindfold chess, giving exhibitions on as many as eight boards simultaneously. In 1976 he switched from chess to backgammon, becoming one of the top players in the world. His major titles include the World Championship in Monte Carlo in 1983 and 1987, the Black & White Championship in Boston in 1979, the Las Vegas tournaments in 1980 and 2001, the Bahamas Pro-Am in 1993, and the Istanbul World Open in 1994. He has written several well-regarded backgammon books, the most noted of which are Advanced Backgammon (1991), a two-volume collection of 400 problems, and Modern Backgammon (2002), a new look at the underlying theory of the game. He has also written a set of three books for the beginning player: Backgammon for Winners (1994), Backgammon for Serious Players (1995), and 501 Essential Backgammon Problems (1997). From 1991 to 1998 he edited the magazine Inside Backgammon with Kent Goulding. He owns a publishing company, the Gammon Press, and lives in Arlington, Massachusetts with his wife Patrice.

I enjoyed this book. I take a star off my rating because I am primarily playing live games, and there were a lot of examples targeted to online players. That said, I enjoyed the example hands and the thought processes behind those examples, but I felt there were a bit too many of them. As other reviewers have noted, the TAG style was given much attention than the LAG style of play.I read both volumes and would happily recommend both.

I have read many poker books and this is probably the best no limit cash game book I have read, especially for covering all stakes. Largay's low limit book is a good read for a very limited game and probably offers some more intensive coverage of that slice of the pie but Harrington covers most of what Largay does and much more in this book.I have read a lot of poker books where the hand examples are almost unbearable to read; in this book I found the presentation of them interesting and understandable. Whoever did the editing of the hand examples seems to have taken special care to make them more easily read than in most poker books, this alone is very helpful.

They say that 'luck is the residue of preparation'. This is especially true when it comes playing poker. So, plan to get very lucky after you read Dan Harrington's 2 volumes on cash game no limit hold'em. I've been a limit player for 20 years. Recently, I decided to devote myself to no limit because of the greater profit in these games. From my general knowledge, I knew that there were significant strategy differences in correct strategy for no limit so I read a couple of books. However, these books didn't really help very much. Then I got Harrington's books and it was like someone had turned on a light in a dark room. It made a world of difference in my game. I 'get it' now. To put some perspective on this, I'm playing in a $2/$3 blind no limit game with a $200 cap on the buyin, in a brick and mortar poker room. I mention this because some of the reviews of these books have critized them for being too basic. However, if you're playing in a small game, basic strategy is probably the BEST strategy. In the second volume, there is a chapter about playing in small no limit games. I recommend you jump ahead and read it first. Keeping this chapter in mind as you read everything else will really give you a great perspective on how to beat a small no limit game. With respect to beating the bigger games, I really don't know if these books will help because I'm not playing in those games yet. But if you are new to no limit, or you are just having trouble beating the small game you're playing in, these books are great.

I have been playing cash games for almost 40 years and have read a lot of books. After reading Cash Games I applied some of Harrington concepts in my games and seen an improvement. Of all the books I have read about poker and gaming I would rate this as on of the top 5. I plan on rereading the book and study it closer now that I am believer in most of his strategies. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is I would like to seen a whole chapter on what you do for the hours between the time you can play a hand. He discusses it some in most chapters, but since you spend most of your time not playing a hand I would like to see more details about the dead time. I would recommend this book to anybody who want to improve there game.

great book for beginners and intermediate players who need a refresher on fundamentals, granted the book is a bit dated but most of the concepts in the book still apply to the game today.Keep in mind no one reads a book and becomes a champion the next day it takes years of dedication practice and whether you like it or not some luck too ,but this book is a great read and must have for any true grinders poker library. also strongly reccomend any and all of phil gordons little books.

This is the single most comprehensive body of poker theories that even a blind poker player(one who doesn’t depend “tells”) can follow. No nonsense and purely logical.

No, this book won't offer a lot for intermediate or advanced players. But then again, it wasn't intended to. Dan Harrington's series is for beginners; an introduction to the world of playing No Limit Hold 'Em cash games (a very different animal from online play). The analysis that Harrington offers (from the perspective of various players' positions), is second-to-none in terms of usability. If you're here and wondering if it's worth it, do yourself a favor and at least pick up the first book in the series. You won't be disappointed.

One of the best if not the best book that I have read in poker. It is important to know the difference between cash games and tournaments. The books is very easy to read and gives great examples. I highly recommend this book, it is woth your investment. I look forward on buying the volumen 2 and 3

Review

"Few historians have the courage to attack great subjects; fewer have the grasp to succeed. This is a book that lets the reader look into the face of one of the major social upheavels of history. . . . A People's Tragedy will do more to help us undersand the Russian Revolution than any other book I know." —Eric Hobsbawm, The London Review of Books"I doubt there is anyone in the world who knows the revolution as well as Figes does." —Norman Stone, The Sunday Times (London)"An engagingly written and well-researched book. . . . Will stand for some time as a standard of historical scholarship." —Steven Merritt Miner, The New York Times Book Review"Huge in scope, brilliant in vignette, dark and implacable in theme, it is a modern masterpiece." —Andrew Marr, The Independent

In South African Schools the Russian Revolution takes a prominent place in the curriculum. As a history teacher I thought that I knew this period of history backwards and I chose to read Mr Figes book because 2017 marks the centenary of the event and, now retired, I thought it might be refreshing to read a history with a more social history slant. You can imagine my surprise and delight to find myself caught in a page-turning account, warts and all, of the historic event and its immediate aftermath. What impressed me most was the scholarship. I read the book on Kindle and was able to disbelievingly check the footnotes. Having read the book I feel our teaching of the revolution is too structured and formulaic. The Bolshevik coup and the early communist policies like War Communism and the NEP evolved more organically out of necessity rather than policy. To me this was a more credible understanding of Bolshevik policy. I also enjoyed the analysis of the failings of the Provisional Government which as liberals we tend to romanticize in the classroom. For anyone interested in this history and especially the insights it provides on modern Russia and the ex-soviet states like the Ukraine, this is a stunning piece of historical research and writing. I would compare it to Simon Schama's "Citizen" on the French Revolution in breadth of account, depth of analysis and fluency of style.

If you want the definitive one-volume take on Lenin's revolution and all that it entailed, this is your book. I was mesmerized from the first page and it lasted right until the end, complete with characters who are followed throughout the entire story, quick and dense analyses of the forces behind events, and a full explanation of the consequences that inevitably followed. It is a masterpiece of historical exposition. The story begins with an analysis of the old regime, the last major one to survive in Europe. On top was the Tsar and the aristocracy, which dominated government and much of the bureaucracy. They owned most of the land, had the most education, and controlled the armed forces. There was a slim tranche that represented an urban middle class, a rising bourgeoisie that dominated commerce and the rudiments of a manufacturing industry, but they were too weak to have much political influence. All the rest, over 90% of the population, were peasants in primitive villages, most of them illiterate; though serfs until the 1860s (bound to the land under the total control of the gentry), they had recently gained some legal rights, including minimal self governance; they were a mix of reactionary conservatives and the disgruntled, who carried a simmering rage.Nicolas II, the Tsar, was so ill-suited to his role that the socio-political forces he faced led to complete catastrophe. Rather than take an interest in the reforms needed - or even in the practical tasks of governing - he chose to live in a dream world in which he imagined the "people" loved him as the eternal soul of the entire country. After a series of assassinations and violent uprisings, he indulged in the idea that autocracy was the answer for the Russian Empire, egged on by his German wife, who believed he should rule as Ivan the Terrible had done. Because Nicolas II was suspicious of anyone who challenged his authority, he actively undermined the government and bureaucracy, preferring the fawning nonsense of manipulative courtiers and religious figures, such as Rasputin. As the social situation worsened, he remained studiously unaware of what should be done to protect Russian institutions and his office. After the 1905 revolution, the Tsar agreed to establish a Parliament, the Duma, but he did not choose to nurture or work with it, losing a significant opportunity.Had there been peace, more peaceful political change might have eventually come, but Nicolas II chose instead to join in the Great War as a Western ally. This war - the first fully modern one that required both an industrial capacity and more flexible institutions - brought the situation to a head. Not only was the aristocratic military revealed as incompetent and uncaring of the lives of its peasant foot soldiers, but the catastrophic conditions under which the war unfolded completely undermined the support of the masses for the Tsar's autocratic government. The result was a revolution that forced him to abdicate in favor of a new parliamentary democracy, which was soon identified with Kerensky. One of the weaknesses of coverage is the precise configuration of the institutions that emerged to fill the gap created by the collapse of the autocracy. First, the Duma remained unrepresentative and weak, particularly with the absence of any viable middle class. Second, there were the Soviets, which apparently were more spontaneous groupings that better reflected the revolutionary forces, though they varied widely in their composition and openness. It was here that the Bolsheviks (the "Reds"), Mensheviks, and various Social Democrats met to debate courses of action. Third, there were disparate groupings that might be seen as power centers, including conservative Aristocrats (the "Whites") and many others, such as ethnic groups, but few added up to any coherent force. I was never clear on how these interacted or what their powers were.Nonetheless, the politics of the situation is very well covered. As the rage of peasants was unleashed in a series of violent movements that attacked and disenfranchised the landed gentry, the Duma appeared impotent to restore order to the situation. Meanwhile, as the war wreaked havoc on the economy, the Bolsheviks emerged as the only ones who clearly opposed continuing to fight (as well as the only party to endorse the aristocracy's destruction as wholly desirable as well as the takeover of industries by workers). This won them the political heart of many peasants, who identified the Reds as the only true force genuinely supporting the revolution. No one else seemed to understand these political facts in the civil war that erupted after the Bolsheviks seized power in the October 1917 coup - the Whites appeared to want to restore the monarchy and land rights of the aristocracy, which at this point was politically impossible and hence completely undermined their cause in the medium term.It is at this point that the personal stories become important. Figes proves that Lenin was the dominant politician of his time, pushing the Bolsheviks to seize power and establish their own form of autocracy, improvising the whole time with decisions that would prepare the ground for the ambitious Stalin to take over the party apparatus and soon (with his ability to appoint cronies in key positions) the entire government. The portraits of these men and scores of others are compelling and fascinating in their quirky detail. Figes is of the opinion that, due to the institutions that Lenin set up, Stalin was an inevitable and natural outgrowth of all that followed, even though Lenin came to oppose him while on his death bed.Once the Bolsheviks were in power, even though they withdrew Russia from the war (with great difficulty), they made a series of mistakes that plunged the country into famine, renewed civil war, and desperate anarchy that took years to set right. To keep themselves in power, they relied on terror in a similar manner to the Tsar, but with ideological purpose guiding their actions and a huge bureaucracy that they installed, often run by uneducated and inexperienced peasant revolutionaries. Figes covers this process well, but his explanations of the impact of Marxist theory were less than satisfying for me, perhaps due to my own ignorance of it (i.e. he goes on about the lack of a capiltalist class, which had to be skipped).Throughout the book, Figes exhibits an admirable skepticism, never indulging in romanticization of any of the characters or their ideas. Except for certain individuals, no class or group comes off well - not the peasants, not the revolutionaries, not representatives of the old regime. A very interesting analysis is offered regarding the mentalities of each group. Cut off as the vast majority was from the ideas in ferment to the west, there was a poverty of ideas under discussion, with few alternatives emerging organically from the society. Instead, the few ideas that did get into the country were viewed as exclusive panaceas rather than part of a mix that required compromise and negotiation; rather than an openness of mind, the lack of education and ignorance promoted rigid minds that rarely questioned opinions once they were adopted. For their part, the Bolsheviks disdained the peasants and workers, in whose name they established their dictatorship. I cannot do justice to the subtlety of Figes' ideas here, but it was one of the most interesting cultural aspects of the book for me. (For example, he views the search for philosophical answers to everything as a key to the appeal of the great Russian novelists of the 19C.)This book is as satisfying an intellectual meal as the general reader could hope for. I simply could not stop reading it and almost never felt bogged down over its 800+ pages. It is an astounding achievement: for the first time in my life, I feel I truly grasp this revolution and all that it meant. While sometimes exhaustive in its detail, Figes never covers events to excess: there is always a purpose to his narrative, so that every single battle or political maneuver is not described; instead, significant or illustrative episodes are highlighted, a relief for lay readers.Recommended with the greatest enthusiasm.

My book club read this book. I wouldn't have picked it out or read otherwise, but I learned a great deal.

The author takes the reader on an informative journey through the Russian Revolution. Much of the text is devoted to elaborations, justifications, and explanations of persons and events, and this can be soporific, especially if you aren't caught up on your sleep. But if you forge ahead, you will be well rewarded. Colorful and historically important characters like Nicholas II, Lenin, Stalin, Trotsky, and Gorky are brought to life with insight, along with the important events they take part in. A large supporting cast, with characters like Alexandra, Rasputin, Kerensky, General Brusilov, and Prince Lvov add to the dramatic saga, highlighted by many tasty anecdotes. You get only a few, unremarkable maps, but you get many photos, and they are good."A People's Tragedy" is a great accomplishment, and a reading of it will enrich you.

Figes's history of the Russian Revolution is detailed and an enjoyable read. Figes's use of individual storylines is especially helpful in elucidating this complicated subject matter. These individual storylines never lose their context and Figes does not stray too long from the main story. Figes should also be commended for not pulling punches. Figes is sure to point out each party's weaknesses and positives. He also spends a great deal of the book (first 1/3 of book) examining the causes of the Revolution, including the 1905 Revolution. This portion of the book can be frustrating when you mostly want to know about the actual events of the Revolution. However, the reader is rewarded once the details and events of the Revolution are told. The actual Revolution is complex, proper introduction and context enhances the reader's understanding to a great deal. This information is especially important because of the different parties involved (Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, The Duma, the Social Democrats, the Revolutionary Democrats). A handy index of these parties is helpful; but more detail in the index would be helpful.Overall, this book is a detailed and compelling telling of the Russian Revolution. Although, its length will give some readers pause (rightly so), taking the plunge with this book will reward the reader interested in the Russian Revolution.
