This book was terrible, and had factual inconsistencies in it. My kids hated it. I bought it for them to read prior to a trip to Alaska, and they started fact-checking it some of the things that were written in the book, and it just wasn't right. So we were really disappointed in this book.

My son and I had to read this book together for his reading assignment. He seemed very engaged and couldn’t wait to hear what happened next. He was upset after reading Togo, that this book gave all the credit to Balto instead of Togo for saving the sick children in the 1925 Nome Serum Run. Other than that, this was a pretty good story. My son could really relate to the kids in the book and really is interested in reading more of Carole Marsh’s books.

As a teacher for 26 years, I used the Iditarod race for a teaching unit for many years. It was nice to have an easy to read book for my lower level learners in my high school classes. Other reviewers said that it was inaccurate. I couldn't find any issues with accuracy, but I'm only a fan, not a researcher. My students enjoyed it.

Use this with my 3rd graders during our Iditarod unit. The kids absolutely LOVE the story! Additionally, there is a teacher's guide that you can purchase that includes activities across the curriculum that you can copy and incorporate to help make the story even more useful. While it "stretches the rules" for the actual race (the young girl in the story gets to drive a dog sled during the Iditarod--you must be at least 18 years old to participate in the Iditarod), it makes for a great story with a wonderful lesson. Highly recommended!

I bought this to read aloud to my class at school as we learned about the Iditarod. They were not impressed and neither was I. They had the mystery figured out way before the end and couldn't believe the kids hadn't figured it out themselves. The ending was rather anti-climatic. The villain claiming he did it all to get money for his sick sister was a lame attempt to justify what he did. The premise is good, real kids having adventures in real places, it would be nice if it was really believable.

The Carole Marsh mysteries are a great way to learn. Good for my 7 year old granddaughters
