Six Miles to Charleston: The True Story of John and Lavinia Fisher (Murder & Mayhem), by Bruce Orr

About the Author

Bruce Orr was raised in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and grew up hunting and fishing the plantations of Berkeley County with his father and brothers. It was during those times he spent many evenings listening to the tales and legends surrounding this historic area. As a young boy, he had an insatiable appetite for the bizarre, unexplained and paranormal and was always searching for answers behind the events he heard at the hunt clubs and fish camps. As he grew into an adult, this natural curiosity in seeking the facts brought him into law enforcement where he eventually became a detective and a supervisor within his agency's Criminal Investigative Division. Now retired, he uses the skills he obtained in his career to research some of the most notorious cases within the Charleston area. He seeks answers through historical documentation in an effort to separate fact from fantasy and to keep the truth from being lost in legend.

Bruce Orr tells a riveting story based upon facts thought to be long lost to time. As someone who also grew up around Charleston,he proves that legends and stories of the low country over time often morph into tall tells. Bruce has applied his skills a a seasoned detective to unravel a story I have heard numerous times. He not only brings a great deal of new information to light but also humanizes an injustice that took place close over 200 hundred years ago.I am willing to bet once you begin reading this you won't want to put it down.Thank you Bruce for your research and insights.

The story of John and Lavinia Fisher seems much different than the legend. More interesting, too. Maybe not serial killers, but instead victims of corrupt local politics. The details kept fascinating me more as I read. The writing could be more disciplined — it wandered from the point several times — but the historical details stuck in my head more than the style. I’d probably mention this book to anyone who brought up Lavinia Fisher.

The legend of early American serial killers is buried with Orr's well researched work. A quick read but a bit repetitious and conclusions are a bit of a stretch at times. Misspellings of repeated names also a bit distracting.

I found this different take on John and Lavinia Fisher quite interesting. I have always heard the myth - Lavinia was the first female serial killer put to death in the US... she haunts the sugar shack to this day, etc. But what Bruce Orr does is really inspect the facts of what happened at the time and that in fact, Lavinia may have put to death for a crime that she didn't commit or that really didn't even happen.

On our first trip to Charleston, SC, my husband and I took one of the historic carriage tours and as we passed by the Old Jail, we heard the story of Lavinia and John Fisher. The tale was so gruesome and haunting that it spooked our 7-year-old goddaughter, who insisted on sleeping with the lights on for the duration of our stay. Retired detective Bruce Orr sets out to find the truth in Six Miles to Charleston: The True Story of John and Lavinia Fisher, and what he discovers is even more shocking and disturbing than what we previously knew to be true.In the late 1810s, John and Lavinia Fisher ran a hotel on the outskirts of Charleston called Six Mile House. The legend told by historians is that the beautiful Lavinia would poison their patrons with oleander tea. Then as they slept, husband John would rob and murder these men and then take them into secret chambers under their inn where he would dismember their bodies and leave the remains. One potential victim was able to escape the clutches of the Fishers, and ran into town to tell the authorities. The police are said to have found dozens of victims buried under their inn. Both John and Lavinia were hanged--Lavinia was said to have worn her wedding dress to the gallows and haunts the city to this day. Lots of other myths have spread about Lavinia including she was the first woman hanged in the United States and she was the first female serial killer. Orr figured that if the case were indeed this sensational, that there had to be some kind of paper trail. "I don't care when the events occurred, the fact that a married couple who robbed and murdered their guests and were executed for it means it's going to be documented somewhere." Orr used police reports, court documents and newspaper articles to discover a totally different tale and one where the Fishers were probably the victims. In fact, almost every "fact" that we have heard about this case is incorrect.Charlestonians pride themselves on getting their history correct, and anyone licensed as a tour guide must take an exhaustive exam. After reading Six Miles to Charleston, it's time for Charleston to rewrite their history books to reflect the real reason that John and Lavinia Fisher were arrested and hanged. Even websites like Wikipedia need to set the record straight. Maybe then, we'll see a little less of Lavinia's ghost haunting the Holy City.

The author has clearly done his research, which is fantastic. However, although this book tells an interesting story, the writing is only adequate and quite confusing. If you're not interested in this topic and this legend, I would advise against buying. Simply because the writing is rough. Great research though!

I am pleased with the book as a fact filled account of circumstances surrounding the Fisher's executions but feel that the writer might have done them an even better justice had the book been an easier read. Still, am happy to have a factual account rather than an exaggeration told on the ghost tours.

Six Miles to Charleston is a quick and interesting read about the facts behind the ghost story of John and Lavinia Fisher. The legend is dark and gruesome, but the true story is full of prison escapes, corrupt government, and years of bitter land disputes. Actually looked into getting the book because it was mentioned on a ghost television show. Was worth the read.

M: The Man Who Became Caravaggio, by Peter Robb

From Publishers Weekly

Recognized now as a peer of 17th-century masters Rembrandt and Vermeer, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) painted notoriously provocative religious and classical tableaux, yet left few traces ("no letters, no table talk, no notebook or treatise") of his life beyond his art. Australian -born Robb, whose ex-pat tour-de-force Midnight in Sicily: On Art, Food, History, Travel, & La Cosa Nostra took readers through that fascinating island, has created an idiosyncratic but dazzling biography of Caravaggio by exploiting almost every extant fragment, including a handful of sightings by friends and enemies, and the scanty Italian police files. More audaciously, Robb spreads through the life many pages on every known canvas, leaving appropriately theatrical description in his wake. Robb's Caravaggio--or "M," as he insists on calling the multimonikered and aliased painter--was a violent man of "hairtrigger touchiness," who fueled the passionate intensity of his painting with his professional and emotional frustrations, managing to register raw life in a religious culture that demanded, according to Robb, vapid holiness. Bisexual, he painted and loved pubescent boys, and patronized the female prostitutes he used as models. To great effect, Robb inserts reflections by the painter's contemporaries within his own sentences, offsetting them with italics rather than quotation marks: "M's repeated and humiliating requests for small advances from Masetti confirmed the need. That wasn't his style and he reddens whenever he sees me." He studs his own descriptions with odd words, obscenities and anachronistic, out-of-place contemporary references ("... like Ronald Reagan playing the cowboy"). Yet it all works--Robb's flawed, melodramatic, swollen biography is crammed with more about the dark, driven Caravaggio than any previous life. Just as Caravaggio took art to the edge, Robb takes biography there. 16 pages of illus., 8 in color, not seen by PW. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Of books about the art and life of the great Caravaggio, there are apparently no end. Unfortunately this comprehensive consideration of the master's life and oeuvre neither particularly expands our understanding nor further illuminates our appreciation. Attentive as he is to the immediate world around the artist, Robb's hostility to Catholicism and his insensibility to the religious content and emotion of Caravaggio's mature paintings vitiates not only the sometimes perceptive value of his analyses but also the quality of his contextual reconstruction. His evocation of qualities in the paintings are not always apparent and are at times dubiously inferred from problematic biographical data. Similarly troubling are his sexualization of the artist's content and the sometimes feverish conspiratorial nets that are educed from a limited body of documentation. "Caravaggesque" provocations, vulgarity, neologisms, colloquial jargon, Australian slang, and smart-alecky allusions mar the verve of Robb's prose. Collections desiring a contextual approach will be better served by Helen Langdon's Caravaggio: A Life (LJ 6/1/99), while those concerned with accessible formal elucidation and comprehensive illustration will wish to acquire Catherine Puglisi's Caravaggio, LJ 4/1/99.---Robert Cahn, Fashion Inst. of Technology, New York Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Excellent bio and a great analysis skill by the author. i read many separated documents on the subject and I notice how well constructed is everything in this book and fits what documents and sources tell. Highly recommended

My main gripe with this book is the terrible quality of the reproductions. They are so bad I bought a $10 Caravaggio book from Taschen and tried to cross-reference. Awkward, but better than relying on the fuzzy reproductions in this book. Robb points out that the life of Caravaggio remains mysterious. Robb's version of it is exactly that: his version. He takes great pains to back up his opinions, but apparently he did his own translations. Did anyone edit his translations? The biographical elements of this book I find questionable, and to some extent he admits that they are. On a more positive note, however, Robb's commentary on the major paintings is thoughtful and fascinating. If this book remains in publication, better reproductions would certainly be helpful.

The art of Caravaggio has always stopped me in my tracks. Peter Robb's book, M: The Man Who Became Caravaggio, help me understand why so many people were affected this way. It's not just the way he tells the story of Caravaggio's life, but how he infuses the paintings with the painter. It's not only the sketchy outline of his life, it is the times in which he lived, the city in which he lived, the people who lived there with him, and the places which are still standing, as they were in the start of the seventeenth century. If you were REQUIRED to take an art history course in college, and you have broken out in hives whenever you approached a masterpiece ever since, then this is the cure.

Peter Robb has managed to achieve a miraculous symphony in this long (500 + pages) book: It's a biography, a detective story (little is known about Caravaggio's life), a social history of Rome, and a definitive art book. As a result, you can read this book on many levels. I read it first as a "beach book" for the story, and then again, when I took a vacation to Rome and tried to see as many of his remaining paintings as I could.Robb explains how Caravaggio was a breakthrough painter in his use of light, and in his use of recognizable local models (almost all of whom Robb has been able to identify) to express the religious art of the day. Mannerism died at his hands. Moreover, Peter Robb builds a credible portrait of Caravaggio's brittle personality--it's easy to see why people were out to kill him. At first I thought the title "M" was a little contrived, but by the end of the book, I realized that it's cipher for the real man behind the familiar name. (Calling someone "Caravaggio" after the town is like giving someone the nickname "Boston").The reproductions are carefully chosen and richly presented. You'll enjoy reading--and re-reading--this wonderful book.

The literary style was a blast, the closest we will ever get to an art biography penned by James Ellroy. I subtracted the star because some of the biographical speculations made by the author have now been proven be inaccurate elsewhere. Don't be dissuaded by stuffy reviews...It's a hell of a lot of fun and need not be definitive to be worthy of a look.

This book has it all - erudition, polemics, irreverence, controversy, intrigue, irony, eroticism, romance, depravity... the list is endless! Meticulously researched and annotated, soundly argued and reasoned, Mr. Robb is a gracious champion to the very complex artist who is historically reduced to a one-dimensional churl who happened to have a way with a paint-brush.Caravaggio was a pioneer (a very dangerous occupation during the counter-reformation), - the manner in which he approached his subjects, the lighting (or relative lack there-of), his refusal to sketch out a work before painting it, his perspective, his "earthy" handling of religious themes; these approaches became both his claim to fame, and his downfall. A downfall facilitated by jealous contemporaries, greedy art collectors, and Caravaggio's own sexual and social indiscretions. Not a light read by any means - make sure your thinking cap is well positioned, and your seat belt is tightly fashioned - you're in for one hell of a ride!

A wonderfully researched and clearly written account of the life of Caravaggio, the great Italian artist who died mysteriously at such a young age. All Caravaggio's paintings are available on the internet and it was great to be able to read Peter Robb's description of the paintings while looking at the image on my tablet at the same time. Caravaggio has always been one of my favourite artists and I loved this book.

Riveting book about the life of a great and fundamentally influential painter. As one art critic put it, "There was painting before Caravaggio and there was painting after Caravaggio."

Man that was sooooooooooooo good! I did not expect it to be so darn good. I've read many Christian fiction, but this one was different. It was real. I could connect because it was real. Little things made me love it and it's authenticity. Like blowing one's nose in a jacket while crying. Like a father having an outburst of past sins and the daughter not batting an eyelash. Like being broke and announcing it freely. Like not hiding from sex, even though it's a Christian book. Man I could go on. I loved the characters! I loved Erica! She was pretty blunt and I loved it, she said what was on her mind, even to Caleb. And it was funny! I have not laughed like this from a book in so long and it was refreshing! 5 full happy stars

By: Brenda BarrettPublished By: Jamaica TreasuresAge Recommended: AdultReviewed By: Arlena DeanRating: 5Series: Three Rivers #2Review:"Loving Mr. Wright" By Brenda Barrett was another good read that only this author can give to its readers. What a 'beautiful and inspiring' Christian romance storyline that only shows how God can give you ... your true desires of your heart. Yes, it did have its drama moments but when the whole story is unfolded you were given a realistic view of just what had happened to our hero Caleb Wright. The only thing that is left for me to do after reading "Loving Mr. Wright" is to get the next series: 'Unholy Matrimony' (Three Rivers Series) as the story will continue on. Would I recommend this series? YES! I loved the book cover!

I wanted to really like this book.... however it was just okay. I read 2 other books by this author and the physical descriptions and character dynamics are quite repetitive. Also, the characters could have been developed a more so that the audience could get a better ideal about the life struggles and how their relationship with God. The relationship between the main characters seemed to emphasize the physical attraction more than anything else. There were a few references to the attraction of character, but nothing of depth.

Overall I am enjoying this series. I find the story lines to be engaging yet parts a little far-fetched but overall good reads, they hold your attention and you can move through them rather quickly. My biggest complaint is editing! I have found many errors and after awhile they become distracting. I will continue because I must find out how everything turns out for Phoebe and Chris Donahue but I would suggest Ms. Barrett gets a reputable editor to assist in correcting all the grammatical errors.

This book was so pivotal in showing how we as Christians often forget where we've been and what it took for us to come out of sin. It shows how God will sometimes allow the enemy to come against us, but in the end we win. Caleb's story is the life of anyone who has stood accused but through salvation can be declared...not guilty!

I read the first book in this series as well as this one but both ended so quickly, as soon as the boy got girl, it was over. I would have preferred to have a bit of story on the end of the book. Both were good books and I enjoyed each. I am heading now for the final book of the series and I anticipate it to be just as good as the other two. They are all light summer reads that you will enjoy if you don't mind the abrupt endings. Bj

This story was only okay especially after reading it right after book 1 (Private Sins). It wasn't as good as the the first book, it didn't capture my interest as much and I thought the ending was rushed. I still enjoyed the characters, but I hope that the third book is better. I still think Brenda Barrett is a good writer and I do enjoy her books. I will probably read Mr Right again at a later time and see if my opinion changes.

I loved the story. God's mercy endures forever. Trusting Him is the only way to live. Being scared happens, but lustening first instead of jumping to conclusions, is a better way to make informed decisions. I was reminded that loving someome means trusting and opening our hearts towait and trust in God's gudance to help us make decisions for our day to day existence. This book is an excellent account of Italian warfare in the Renaissance. It can get a bit dry in a few places, but Mr. Mallett does a good job of keeping things moving along. Clarity is another strong point of this book: I never had trouble understanding what the book was trying to tell me. This should be commended, since this kind of subject matter is easy to render painful to read. This book is quite old at this point by scholarly standards, and its age is starting to show in some places. Most notably, its account of the Battle of Castagnaro is almost completely wrong. (The battle's Wikipedia article was, at the time of writing, much more accurate. It's also worth a look, since it's one of the more famous condottiere battles.) That said, the rest of the book holds up excellently, and it's totally worth a read for anyone interested in the subject.

Detailed overview of the Italian Condottiere in the 15th century. The focus is less on individuals, battles, or social histories, but more on the administrative interaction between mercenary capitans and the Italian city states.Good read for anyone interested in the topic but a bit dry for dabblers.

Interesting, but some detail may not be correct. The author indicates the crossbow came into use in the 12th century, but it ws there long before that and not invented in the West. He may have meant it largely replaced the longbow then. Interesting details on some of the leaders and operations.

well researched and fairly easy read

Very good analysis of a complex topic. It was a pleasure to read. More detail in descriptions of battles would have been helpful.

Very detailed yet interestingly written.

This is simply the best book about warfare in Renaissance Italy. It is a serious academic study, but trust me, it reads as a good novel. The author opens for us a bright window into the world of condottieri, tyrans and heroes of Renaissance Italy, world of enormous passions, ambitions, lust for power and money, chivalry, violence and war. One of my favourite books on Renaissance warfare!
