This is a gem of a book. Part cookbook, part memoir - it takes you through the author's journey from her childhood memories of the food she loved then to the food she cooked in kitchens, both humble and challenging, along the way to becoming a culinary celebrity in her own right. One does not have to be terribly familiar with Joanne Weir to enjoy the stories in this book because it turns out that Weir crafts prose as deftly as she crafts her recipes. The book is beautiful designed - more like a carefully kept scrapbook than anything - and it starts out with Weir's childhood. One of the first recipes in the book is one for a simple tomato sandwich, but her description how particular her mother was, even about making the simplest things to eat, will have you baking your best bread and whisking up homemade mayonnaise to pair with the ripest tomatoes you can find so that you, too, can experience what brilliance there is to be found in a simple tomato sandwich. From there, Weir's experiences include stints with the infamously demanding Madeleine Kamman, to working at Chez Panisse where she watched the California food movement unfold, to discovering new and exciting flavors on trips abroad, and finally to opening her own restaurant. She documents her tales with the very special recipes she learned and developed along the way. Although there are many recipes with ingredients that may be difficult to find outside of major cities, there are enough recipes with easily obtainable ingredients to make the book entirely worthwhile. Who makes every recipe in a cookbook anyway?Weir's recipes, even the most ambitious ones, are accessible because of the tremendous amount of detail in the instructions. Her enthusiasm is infectious, so you will more than likely find yourself making a shopping list from each chapter you finish. When you get back from the market and start to follow the recipe, you will notice that Weir has written every step of the instructions with the kind clarity that every cookbook should have.If you are looking for a highly readable cookbook that will take you on a journey from Mom's Whoopie Pies to Stuffed Chicken Breasts with Dried Figs and Fontina to Fried Pork Belly Tacos with Pipian Sauce with plenty of delicious stops in between, then this might very well be your ticket. It's easily one of my favorite cookbooks of this year. It's also a good read even if you don't cook.

Kitchen Gypsy : recipes and stories by Joanne Weir is a beautfully presented food memoir with lots of photographs, recipes, and remembrances of her past, and earlier cooking experiences. The marinated and grilled Halibut with a pistachio -mint salsa verde was delicious and her spiced chicken was very good. I'm looking forward to trying many more recipes, and also to making these two recipes again very soon.

I am so enjoying this book. I have tried a few of the recipes- they have all been delicious. It is also a great read. I' ve enjoyed reading about her grandparents farms and their traditions. It has been my lunch break read for a couple of weeks. ( leading to much better dinners!)

This book is fabulous for those of us who enjoy Joanne Weir's PBS cooking shows. She writes in such a way that I was hooked from the beginning, her story is as interesting as one would find in a novel. However, for those of us who love to cook, it is far better than a novel. For one cannot read it without going away hungry and inspired to close the book and cook. Which may be why it took awhile to read all of it.This book is both memoir and recipe book. So if you just want recipes, reach for another of her books. If you want to learn more about Joanne and the way she cooks... then this is the book for you.

I am proud to say I own all of Joanne Weir's cookbooks. As each one is so unique with such incredible recipes, reading about her life and how her passion for food actually started was so amazing. She speaks so openly, it is a joy to read. I have already made so many of the recipes and they are all fabulous. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. What a true gift Joanne is to all of us.

This is a great read as well as a lovely and approachable collection of recipes. I have several of Joanne's earlier books that have always been counted in my go-to favorites. With Kitchen Gypsy, the collection of memories woven around the food lends context and texture to the cooking experience. The recipes are well-tested and clearly presented, and Joanne's penchant for vibrant flavors and approachable technique makes this a book that lives on the kitchen shelf that holds all my favorites.

I found this book to be informative and entertaining. I have made the Lemony Lemon Bars and they were delicious! I would highly recommend this cookbook.

I am a big fan of Joanne Weir and on her TV show it said her recipes were available in Kitchen Gypsy. I purchased the book then discovered there was no recipe from that particular show featured in her Kitchen Gypsy book. I was truly disappointed.

I can't wait to try all the recipes. Every recipe I have made so far has been good and straight forward.
