Review

Magic Medicine is an entertaining, up-to-date encyclopedia of the ineffable, offering easy-to-digest insight into a dizzying array of psychoactive drugs and sacred plant medicines. -- Don Lattin, author of The Harvard Psychedelic Club and Changing Our Minds -- Psychedelic Sacraments and the New PsychotherapyWhat a good book this is! A rarity among psychedelic publications, it is straightforward, useful, makes complex biochemistry understandable, and will be a reference for years to come. It is a drug-by-drug series of clear, useful descriptions of just what you need to know about both synthetic and plant-based psychedelics. I thought I knew all this stuff, but Johnson weaves in excellent scholarship and some wonderful stories that surprised and delighted me as well.-- James Fadiman, Ph.D., microdose researcher and author of The Psychedelic Explorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred JourneysMagic Medicine takes us on a journey into the most controversial and mysterious of medicines: the mind altering plants and chemicals responsible for some of our greatest visionary creativity and also our paranoid delusions. Cody Johnson does a great job at separating fact from fiction in this eye-opening book.-- Jason Silva, host of National Geographic's Brain Games and the hit YouTube series, Shots of AweThis is a delightful book that takes the reader on a pleasurable trip through several millennia of use and reflections on humans use of psychedelics. It is beautifully researched and pleasingly produced, with a satisfying balance of science, history and insights. I am sure that everyone interested in this growing field will find something new to intrigue and hopefully inspire them.-- Prof. David Nutt, Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Imperial College London, and author of Drugs Without the Hot AirMagic Medicine is a wonderful object as well as a valuable text on this essential subject. Johnson describes a wide range of psychedelic substances - their effects, history and contemporary uses - in a readable style of prose and set amidst an alluring and beautifully presented format. Highly recommended!-- Dr. Ben Sessa, psychiatrist, psychedelic researcher, and author of The Psychedelic Renaissance: Reassessing the Role of Psychedelic Drugs in 21st Century Psychiatry and Society

Let me start by telling you what this book is NOT so that you can appreciate the specialness of what it IS.If you want super detailed breakdowns of the intricate chemistry of psychedelics, this isn't the book to read.If you want lengthy trip reports of what happened when a person took mushrooms or peyote or LSD, look elsewhere. If you want detailed instructions for growing or cultivating your own psychedelics, you wont find it here. But if you want a gorgeous, engrossing, and simply joyful tour of the entire psychedelic universe?I cannot imagine a better book to pick up.This book delightfully weaves together the history of psychedelics, drawing you in with stunning visuals, fascinating historical anecdotes, and comparisons between how one mild-altering substance makes you feel versus another. if you are interested in wrapping your mind around this entire space (AKA becoming an "overnight expert" with interesting things to say and share with others) this book will not let you down.Ironically, this may be the book whose reading experience best approximates what it is like to trip on a psychedelic: a spacey, visual, and mind-bending tour of a world that is strange, foreign, subversive, and above all, FUN!You can tell the author had a blast researching / writing it, and I'm proud to say I had at least as much fun reading it.My research library on psychedelics would be incomplete without this volume.Pick it up. You wont regret it!

I’ve been reading about psychedelics since 2012, but I hadn’t read a book like Cody Johnson’s until I read his book. By consecutively reading from his book about the histories—from aboriginal to modern usage, or, for the synthetic compounds, like 2C-B and DiPT and MDMA, from synthesis through popularization and/or illegalization to today and the future—of 23 compounds, plants, or families of compounds, I gained a wider perspective on the world of psychedelics. The world seems bigger than it did before. I see more clearly now that there are many more psychedelic compounds and plants, and more varied usages of them, than I’d normally assumed.A book like Johnson’s can seem Wikipedia-like, but I mostly did not feel bored or like I was on the surface of things, as I would on Wikipedia. Johnson selects the most interesting things about each substance, citing pre-20th century sources, out-of-print books, obscure papers, and information on aboriginals, like the Koyrak Tribe: "At seasonal feasts and weddings, everyone consumes [fly agaric], often with berry juice."I learned that Leo Zeff, the pioneer in using LSD and MDMA in psychotherapy, also used ibogaine. Johnson quotes Zeff: "Of everything we tried, ibogaine achieved the most profound personal transformation of the patient—which after all is the goal and purpose of psychiatry. When it worked, the therapist was just a bystander.”Johnson writes from a sophisticated, open-minded perspective. He doesn’t get into his personal use of psychedelics, but I get the sense—from subtle clues in the writing—that he is experienced and deeply interested in natural and synthetic psychoactive substances, and in history and nature. I liked this sentence: "Tripping while depressed, anxious, or sleep deprived is a recipe for a difficult journey." On legality, Johnson points out that "the prohibitive approach actually maximizes their risks." He elaborates: "Imagine ordering a martini at a bar and not knowing whether you'll receive a martini or a triple shot of high-proof grain liquor—or a concoction with no alcohol, but a potent blend of caffeine, ketamine, methamphetamine, and stimulants you've never heard of."I recommend this book to have around. Even though I’d used ketamine before, and had read about it in scattered articles and papers for years, it felt good to be able to open Johnson’s book and read its ketamine chapter before using ketamine again, recently, to refresh what I know. The same could be done with the other compounds/substances in Magic Medicine—nitrious oxide, DXM, DOM, morning glory, peyote, Yopo, fish and sea sponges, MDA, 5-MeO DMT, and others.

To be up front, I'm not the type of person that would typically understand a lot of what this book is talking about - I have never been exposed to psychedelics in any form or fashion. The brilliant elegant cover and design pulled me to check it out, I read the first chapter, and immediately wanted more. Johnson does a fantastic job of tailoring his writing both to the very novice such as myself, as well as those most experienced with the psychedelics he highlights in the book. The book is easy to follow, well organized, and as elegant in writing as the typography and illustrations are throughout. The book served as a launch pad, prompting me to get online and research more about each one of the chapters. I may never try psychedelics, but I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about them, or who is already a well-seasoned fan of them and interested to learn a bit more about the history, and projected future of their medicinal properties. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Mr. Johnson!

Fantastic read and reference presenting the world of psychedelics from an informed and intelligent but not-at-all-pretentious perspective. Johnson is an excellent writer and his style of writing is extremely engaging. Bonus: a great coffee table display - it has already sparked a lot of curious inquiries and flip-throughs from guests to my apartment!

Magic Medicine is a fantastically written book, that is well organized and information. The illustrations beautifully complement the fascinating content. As someone that does not have a lot of experience in the world of psychedelics, I found the book both entertaining and informational. Word choice and description enhance the reading experience. As someone with family members that have experienced a tremendous amount of physical paint while battling illnesses, I wish I had had this book and information sooner. If you have friends or family interested in this topic, Magic Medicine is a great read and source of information.

NEW SCIENCE / EARTH CHANGESMany ancient myths from around the world tell of catastrophic destruction by fire and flood. These ubiquitous legends are so extreme that they are often dismissed as imaginative exaggerations. In Earth Under Fire, Paul LaViolette connects these “myths” to recent scientific findings in astronomy, geology, and archaeology to reconstruct the details of prehistoric global disasters and to explain how similar tragedies could recur in the near future. Compelled by his decryption of an ancient warning hidden in zodiac constellation lore, LaViolette worked with information from many scientific sources, including astronomical observations, polar ice core measurements, and other geological data, to confirm that our Galaxy’s core exploded near the end of the last ice age. This explosion unleashed a barrage of cosmic rays and enveloped the solar system in a dense nebula, which led to periods of persistent darkness, frigid cold, severe solar storms, searing heat, and mountainous floods that plagued mankind for many generations. Linking his scientific findings to details preserved in the myths and monuments of ancient civilizations, he demonstrates how past civilizations accurately recorded the causes of these cataclysmic events, knowledge of which may be crucial for the human race to survive the next catastrophic superwave cycle. This information reveals the intelligence and ingenuity of our ancestors who, when faced with extinction, found the means to warn us that the apocalypse that destroyed them could occur once again. PAUL A. LAVIOLETTE, PH.D., is president of the Starburst Foundation, an interdisciplinary research institute, and holds degrees in both systems science and physics. The author of Genesis of the Cosmos and Subquantum Kinetics, he lives in New York.

The work of Paul LaViolette has really important implications. It is a synthesis of evidence for effects on Earth of past intense cosmic ray particle bombardments from the center of our galaxy, with known geologic features showing evidence of rapid earth changes, and an examination of ancient legends about disastrous climatic events. But it is even more than that. The author proposes that our long-ago progenitors may have coded a message -- a warning -- about a physical danger that can quickly destroy a civilization. Have we just recently become knowledgeable enough about the universe to understand this message?~~ ZODIAC POINTERS TO COMING DISASTER ~~The author proposes that the Zodiac constellations and the Tarot cards, both of which go back to antiquity, are really pointers to a past event that ended the last ice age, causing sudden changes in earth's climate and a world-wide deluge as water was released from glaciers. These changes happened as the Earth became engulfed in dust coming from explosions in the galactic center. These "superwaves" affect our solar system, causing the sun to get hotter and release huge bursts of plasma which in turn melt ice formations on Earth and on Mars. This book gives a lot of information which is difficult at times to take in because of its complexity and novelty. The implications of the contents are breathtaking, including a real possibility that another of these Galactic blasts is even now on its way toward us. Remember, the last one caused rapid climate changes and wiped out existing civilizations.~~ CHALLENGING ORTHODOX SCIENCE ~~The author sometimes adds little pieces of speculation (based on pretty good evidence) on completely new ideas challenging scientific orthodoxy. For instance, evolution is possibly not just about "survival of the fittest" but has to do with physical mutations that occur quickly in all species when the Earth's atmosphere changes with the arrival of cosmic dust, speeding up evolution and advancing man forward (physically and/or spiritually?). Or that the galactic center is a violent place periodically emitting powerful blasts of rays and dust, but is also a place of creation, where matter is constantly created.~~ TALES OF THE FLOOD ~~Dr. LaViolette switches easily between heavy science and detailing of ancient legends from societies, past and present, all over the world, that tell of huge catastrophes that wiped out human and animal life. The most common are the tales of a flood that rushed over all land, drowning the inhabitants and destroying whatever they had built. Noah from the Bible is not the only hero emerging from these stories, which often include tales of survivors who hid in caves or climbed to mountaintops or who, like Noah, built a boat or raft and rode out the storm.Obviously, humanity DID survive, and so did many species of animals, and we have again built a high level of civilization that understands that our planet is part of something much bigger: a galaxy of stars with us way out on a spiral arm, located in a universe too vast to chart. The galaxy moves through space and our solar system goes with it. Along the way we meet with particles that come from elsewhere in our galaxy or from other regions of space that we pass through. Mostly, we take no notice, but sometimes -- with thousands of years intervening -- we pass through foreign particles and cosmic rays that can have an enormous effect, both on our world and on ourselves. The author examines the many theories of past civilizations like the Maya, Aztec, Hindu, Chinese and others that speak of "ages" of the world. Each "age" has a beginning and an end, the end usually coming from some disaster that destroys the civilization. He relates some of these to the zodiac positions of star constellations and what they represent and what they may be telling us. This is the most extensive recounting of these stories that I have seen in any book, and they come from all parts of the world. The last destruction must have been world-wide.He also has the most unique theory about Atlantis, mention of which is usually toxic for scientists. Dr. LaViolette goes right out on a limb and says Atlantis was really... a giant ice island in the Atlantic ocean! This would have existed in the last ice age, but would have melted and disappeared rapidly (just as Plato said in the Critias!) during the cosmic superwave of 10,700 years ago!~~ CYCLES OF EARTH HISTORY ~~Other books exploring mankind's hidden past have shown that knowledge of "cycles" existed in the remote past. The 26,000 year circuit of the zodiac constellations around the horizon, known as the precession, was encoded in many of the old stories and legends. This is a time span way beyond the survival of most cultures, and the movement of these stars is not discernable within a lifetime. How did the ancients learn of it and why did they attach importance to it?Dr. LaViolette's book picks up the same idea, tracing the zodiac arrangement back to antiquity, but also noting where it ties into a zodiac sign's relationship to the galactic center. The zodiac constellations become markers for the path a superwave would follow to enter our solar system. The last mass extinction of species occurred 10,750 years ago, when the sun rose on the vernal equinox in the constellation of Leo the Lion. The great Sphinx of Egypt gazes toward the horizon where the constellation would have been at that time. A pointer toward the location of zodiac constellations when important events happen can indicate when they happened.Could an advanced civilization have existed before the last destruction and have they tried to warn us via stories that are metaphors for the approach and destructive (but also creative) effects of cosmic dust storms?Even if we have a warning, what can we do about it? Turns out, not much. A cosmic blast from the galactic center would come without much warning. The author says we would first see a "blue light" or blue star that would be matter coming our way from the center of the galaxy; the blast of cosmic dust that could send our sun into a very violent and hot phase and to darken it as the dust envelops everything in its path would come next.~~ SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS ~~Despite the author's careful gathering of facts, using ice core information, geologic evidence and evidence in the sky, he has had a difficult time getting other scientists to listen. He has had some journal publications, but because of the spectacular implications of his work, universities and government agencies have been slow to assist or help.He undoubtedly earns the disapproval of his astrophysics colleagues by looking at unorthodox sources, such as "channeled" information from a psychic pertaining to the apparitions at Fatima Portugal in 1916, which have been considered by the Catholic Church as an appearance by the Virgin Mary. The "source" provides information which relates the message and what happened ("miracle of the sun') to an enactment of a past natural catastrophe which the author interprets as a possible galactic superwave. The apparition could thus be considered a warning about the future. But, in the case of the Fatima apparitions, exactly who is issuing the warning? And why did the message come 100 years ago, before we had solid knowledge of our own galaxy? Many of the sources with religious origins talk about a catastrophe that can be avoided if mankind will turn from his evil ways. Could the world of spirit actually be involved in somehow deflecting a superwave? The author doesn't quite go down that path, but he seems very willing to consider all sources in seeking answers.I think Dr. LaViolette has packed a bit too much into this book, giving the reader a lot to absorb. He does refer us to his other books for more details on his theories, and for me, reading this one does make me want to know more. His intelligence, intensity, persistence, painstaking research and desire to find the truth shine through this book. You can find more about him at the website for the Starburst Foundation, the organization he founded to further his research. There are many theories of alternative history, postulating past civilizations, ancient astronauts, visitors from outer space, etc. But this book brings a scientific framework for the theories presented, and loads of illustrations and charts with data backing up all claims. You can hardly read it and not conclude that the author has done the work, paid his dues and has something to say. His words are worth your consideration.

Started out with really mixed (and a ... cautious ...) willingness to read through what seemed (and may BE) kinda woo-woo stuff. But, despite my somewhat cynical misgivings, I kept going, and Dr. LaViolette kept getting more and more seriously scientific and backing up his stuff more and more. I was pretty firmly committed (and still mostly am) to "The Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes: How a Stone-Age Comet Changed the Course of World Culture" http://www.amazon.com/Cycle-Cosmic-Catastrophes-Stone-Age-Changed/dp/1591430615/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1445964217&sr=8-1&keywords=Firestone+Cosmic by Richard Firestone, Allen West, and Simon Warwick-Smith ; but LaViolette has thrown some serious doubts/conflicting science into my mental-mixer... I've also listened to some interviews with him -- and he seems very reasonable and well-spoken. I will continue to research his stuff, and see how my opinions move... Recommend reading BOTH this and Firestone's books!

I stumbled upon this book while doing my own research about past catastrophes in Earth's history for my book Mayan Calendar Prophecies: Predictions for 2012-2052: What the Mayan civilization's history and mythology can tell us about our future.. I kept finding evidence of multiple catastrophes (super solar flares, comet impact events, etc) all happening simultaneously which seemed to defy logic. Over and over again the ancient myths I was researching noted the appearance of a new star in the sky followed by major solar storms and impact events. How could so many catastrophes happen simultaneously...the odds seemed against such a thing UNLESS there was some underlying cause behind them all. Earth Under Fire provided the answer: eruptions from the center of our galaxy occasionally emit massive vollies of cosmic rays, which the author termed Galactic Superwaves, and these vaporized comets in the Oort Cloud surrounding our solar system, home to long period comets. This Superwave would push this debris into the inner solar system where it would fall onto the sun causing it to enter a T-Tauri like active phase spitting off coronal mass ejections and super solar flares. This cometary debris would also crash into the earth. The galactic core explosion would appear to people on earth as the sudden appearance of a bright blue star between the constellations Scorpio and Sagittarius where our galactic center is located. This finally explained all the evidence I was finding not only in ancient myths but also in ice core data, etc.Interestingly, the author noted that one such minor superwave happened in 3300 BC and this was likely the origin of the Mayan calendar start date in 3114 BC. Apparently the author was not aware that the Maya actually recorded a massive catastrophe happening on Earth in 3300 BC! This "myth" was recorded inside Temple XIX at Palenque. I decoded this myth along with several similar myths from around the world in my book Mayan Calendar Prophecies: Predictions for 2012-2052: What the Mayan civilization's history and mythology can tell us about our future.. The myth records the appearance of a new star followed eleven years later by a super solar flare, comet fragmentation event, and oceanic impact events that led to multiple mega-tsunamis that inundated Earth's coastlines.Curiously, the Maya noted that a green sky serpent (comet) they named Kukulkan/Quetzalcoatl acted as a herald or messenger of such events. One green comet, Comet Machholz, actually appeared in 2004 and was found to have a 12,500 year orbit and would last have appeared in 10,500 BC around the time of the last major superwave event. Coincidentally, it became naked eye visible in late 2004 around the time of the Indonesian tsunami which the author of Earth Under Fire says was caused by a gravity wave that preceded another superwave that hit earth at the same time as the earthquake. I also discussed this in my book.Overall I think Earth Under Fire has finally created a scientific theory that appears to explain ALL the data, both physical and cultural/mythological, that records a cycle of catastrophes on our planet. Highly recommended.

This book is a detailed read, but well worth it. I recommend this book even though I do not agree with every point made in the book, as he sees all past evidence as pointing to his theory, whereas sometimes it is clear that other things are being referred to, such as asteroid impact.Nevertheless it contains a huge quantity of information that will benefit anyone doing research in the subject of catastrophism, or the destruction of ancient civilizations. It even has information relevant to the future. Has numerous end notes and bibliography.

An interesting account of earth's ancient history. However, the author is a PHD & uses lots of mathmatical formulas which make sense to him but not me! Had to skip over these parts of the book.

Amazon.com Review

Are you an HSP? Are you easily overwhelmed by stimuli? Affected by other people's moods? Easily startled? Do you need to withdraw during busy times to a private, quiet place? Do you get nervous or shaky if someone is observing you or competing with you? HSP, shorthand for "highly sensitive person," describes 15 to 20 percent of the population. Being sensitive is a normal trait--nothing defective about it. But you may not realize that, because society rewards the outgoing personality and treats shyness and sensitivity as something to be overcome. According to author Elaine Aron (herself an HSP), sensitive people have the unusual ability to sense subtleties, spot or avoid errors, concentrate deeply, and delve deeply. This book helps HSPs to understand themselves and their sensitive trait and its impact on personal history, career, relationships, and inner life. The book offers advice for typical problems. For example, you learn strategies for coping with overarousal, overcoming social discomfort, being in love relationships, managing job challenges, and much more. The author covers a lot of material clearly, in an approachable style, using case studies, self-tests, and exercises to bring the information home. The book is essential for you if you are an HSP--you'll learn a lot about yourself. It's also useful for people in a relationship with an HSP. --Joan Price

This may be the best book I have read in years. Maybe a decade. I was a year and a half into a very stressful job with a bully boss when I found this book -- I'd heard about it for years but thought the title sounded girlie and wimpy so I hesitated to read it. I don't like gooey, emotional, sappy stuff. Well guess what... no sap here. Or at least so little sap that a person who doesn't like sappy didn't really notice. Instead I found a smart, astute, science-based book which explained to me why I was slowly dying at my job, why I could not sleep at night, and why I was so stressed at work that I literally could not stomach my sandwich at lunch but would almost throw it up every day (but I could eat at home) -- I was operating at a level of physical stress which was impossible for a highly sensitive person to sustain, and yet I was somehow sustaining it. (I am very stubborn.) Once I actually looked at myself, looked at my actual situation, stopped blaming myself for being "weak" and "broken" and "not tough enough" and stopped trying to be what I am not, I saw clearly that I was ignoring my physical body's symptoms of extreme stress and hurting myself bad. Reading this was a wake up call at a time in my life when I really needed it, and gave me enough confidence to finally stand up to my impossible to please, bullying, manipulative boss and just quit. I am going back to school and retraining to become a software developer so that I can work in an environment that won't kill me. Not everyone is the same; everyone has different physical tolerances. If you find yourself "too sensitive" etc, give yourself a break. You are not a clone of the extrovert next to you. Pay attention to your body and read this book. IF YOU ARE AN EXTROVERT, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. If you are NOT highly sensitive, please read this book!!! I wish to God every human being would read this book so people could finally start understanding each other, and society in general would stop hurting those among them who are not built with the same nervous system that the 80% majority of humanity has!!!! This has nothing to do with race boundaries, religion, nationality... this is all about pure genetics and how our species (in fact how over 100 species on this planet) function. It's ground breaking work.

I'm actually only partway into this book and wow. Wow. WOW. If you're reading my review right now and you've never heard the term Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) before, stop right now, open a different tab, and google it. Read stuff for a few minutes. If anything you've googled resonates, BUY THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY. Basically the author is the primary source for most of what you'll read online, and she has a very pleasant to read way of laying out the research and making it clear what things we know about HSPs and how and why we know them... it's like reading a well-organized textbook written by a friend you like. 15%-ish percent of us were born with brains that process this way, and if you're one of us, knowing about it will save you a heckuva lot of therapy, stress, and self-loathing.

I have always been sensitive. No, that is wrong. I prided myself as being NOT sensitive for years. To the point of disconnecting from my emotions. It took me a long while to come to terms with being an HSP (highly sensitive person). For anyone who is, I recommend this book. It is an illuminating look at the personality type of being an HSP and shows that being sensitive isn't such a bad thing. I've bog eared, highlighted passages, and put page markers all over it.If you think you are an HSP, or realize that you are one this is the book for you and it has helped me to not pathologize myself and to embrace who I am again.

This book is a mess; I found it to be largely fluffy non-sense based on loose generalizations with no scientific backing. I am a HSP, but this book is a complete joke. I am absolutely shocked there are so many good reviews. This book was a waste of time and should not have been written in its current form. The author should have waited until these claims could have been better substantiated either by more scientific studies/evidence or by coherent clinical experience rather than wild, all-over-the-place generalizations and annoying stereotypes. And the entire book could have been condensed down to 3 pages.

This book provides insight into some of the many questions as to "why" 20% of us experience life so differently from the majority who set the norms in our society. The HSP's trait allows us to process input from our five senses so deeply and thoroughly that we require a different optimal balance of "in" and "out" time in society to reach our highest potential without over-stimulation and/or burnout. The other 80% whose traits process less intense depth, detail and stimulation from their senses tend to value the more assertive/aggressive behaviors therefore they often misunderstand the HSP's need for quiet reflective time as a sign of timidity. The Warrior Kings (80%) need the Royal Advisers (20%) to point out the benefits and/or consequences of an action...and so much more.

If you're on the fence on this one, buy anything from this author. I'm not sure it inspired my rooms yet but the writing is like eating honeyed toast, it is full of content, and it makes you feel good to read it. Love it. Thinking of buying a physical copy.

I liked the way the author had the reader take stock of their room, their lifestyle and what they how they wanted to live in each of their rooms instead of telling the reader here is a living room and here is how you should decorate it. The author gave simple, sensible and in most cases inexpensive advice on making the rooms in house reflect your style and personality. Thanks to this book my home will be more personable and less "trendy" and I won't break my budget decorating it. Best of all I'll enjoy living in them and sharing them with friends and family.

First of all this is a BEAUTIFUL book to browse through - the photographs are outstanding and beyond inviting. Go deeper and Melissa does not disappoint. Better than her blog, Melissa inspires and guides you to create a thoughtful personal home.I would certainly recommend this book to beginning homemakers. As well as more seasoned homeowners looking to refresh their home or tweak it by looking at each room with fresh eyes and embellishing what you have using Missa's fantabulous tips. She thoroughly explains her thought process behind each tip.Great book - this is a winner and would enhance any coffee table - just leave it out and browse through it when you're having one of those days when you need a pick me up for your home.Thank you Melissa !!!!!!!

SERIOUSLY helpful book. After reading just one chapter I transformed my entryway (which doesn't really exist, but now I realize it does, thanks to Melissa!) into a beautifully warm and welcoming space. I recommend this to anyone who wants functional, beautiful help but doesn't know where to start or have much experience with it!

beautiful photographs. This book does have a coastal vibe, which I love, but may not be to everyone's taste. At the very least it makes a gorgeous coffee table book.

Love this book. The designer does not tell you how you have to design your home or give you rules of decorating. She focuses on helping you find your style and inspiration to decorate the house you live in and love it. What I like best about her style is that it's not overly fussy but it actually looks like a beautiful, practical, and breathable home. If it's not your design style, you can simply get inspiration to find what you love. It's really easy to read and feel engaged. The cover itself is beautiful and can be used as decor as well.

So delighted I bought this book. Melissa has a special way of making decorating ----- for which I have NO talent!--- a joy! It's a simple and enjoyable approach that no one has ever taught me. I've had several decorators come to my house, and although they were very good, they talked me out of things that I wanted because it wasn't 'how it's usually done'. Melissa works within the basic design elements, but elaborates on how you can modify anything to fit your taste. I love how she emphasizes how your home should be your sanctuary. Your safe and peaceful place. And that the journey to getting that place is part of the joy!.

Melissa Michaels is inspiring. Someone suggested her first book to me when I had just moved into "new built" house & I was longing for the home I had lived in for 35 yrs. It really helped me see I could transform my new house into a home that was me. (I'm still working on it). I am a 67 yr. old grandmother who followed the fly lady years ago. Much of what Melissa writes about is not new to me but I sure needed to be reminded that the soul of my home resides within me.

#779,537 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is really an excellent book. It is very well -referenced. it offers just the right amount of history, background and necessary physiology, and then dives right into very well organized and clearly described exercises.

This is book is not what I expected at all. I didn't have much time to spend on what book to buy for my vacation, and for some reason chose this one. It was a complete waste of money. It is a very very basic book, I felt like it was written for seniors, especially when the author went on about safety of walking bare feet for pages... There has been numerous books written on benefits of earthing or grounding. I started skipping through it after about 20%, since I knew at that point that I won't get much out of this one. I have been doing meditation, Yoga, qi gong for over 15 years, and all of that was way more effective and helpful than this. He gives very specific assignments to memorize and follow (like at high school) and do it for months adding some other formula to it every week, and doing it for years. There was a lot of anatomy review of various senses and nervous system, which was nothing new for me. I was hoping that the primal awareness part of the book will be more interesting, but it wasn't. All it was his specific instructions on how to get closer to nature, such as go on a tree stand in a forest and spend hours there, how to bury yourself overnight safely etc. Even when he was sharing his experiences of being buried alive and having NDE, there was no any inspiring insights other than it changed his life, gave him different perspective on things, more feeling of connection to Earth and confidence. It's surprising it took him that much to feel that, he could have done it way easier with yoga and qi gong, probably within a week of practice. The only thing I might try from this book is using solid color backgrounds when I meditate on chakras with specific colors, which is hard to visualize for a long time, but I am not going to hold a piece of fabric for 10-15 min, that's not going to help me relax, I will find easier way to do it. Overall, you can help yourself more by going to youtube for free and finding what appeals to you, such as hypnosis from Michael Sealey, healing videos and mantras from Nipun Aggarwal etc. So, unless you are very new to any kind of relaxation techniques, don't waste your money.

I’m a big fan of Autogenic Training. I cut my teeth on this process as a fresh Ph.D. looking for an alternative to hypnosis to explore altered states of consciousness and the psychic/spiritual realms. Hypnosis, as popular and effective as it is, nevertheless has an aura of ambiguity around it—What is hypnosis? How can you tell if someone is hypnotized and how “deeply”?—our answers to such questions are more matters of operative convenience than necessarily agreed upon specific realities, such as a saying it is a state of heightened suggestibility. Besides, being “suggestible” doesn’t sound like a positive attribute. Autogenic Training, however, has very specific steps in a mind-body process of disengaging the conscious-sensory mind and activating the subliminal mind, the subconscious and its imagination and ability to affect bodily functions. The training also gives specific focus to developing the skill of “passive volition.”Set your intention, and then let go and let the intention do the work. I’m sure you’ve heard of such advice. In Autogenic Training, we learn this specific skill. To the wise, passive volition actually is suggestibility, but one voluntarily engaged as a positive, creative act. This same ability underlies the various improvisational arts, including “channeling,” although this fact may be hard to recognize by folks who maintain a dualistic notion of reality. I have found Autogenic Training opens an important doorway to higher consciousness. I’m glad to come across a book that focuses on this spiritual dimension of Autogenic Training.Advanced Autogenic Training and Primal Awareness: Techniques for Wellness, Deeper Connection to Nature, and Higher Consciousness, by James Endredy is truly a new and innovative approach to AT, one that respects the important basics, but which goes far beyond what the creators of AT had originally imagined. The author has written previously on the subject and knows it well, but he has brought to it an entirely new (to AT) dimension, one that I have been familiar with and am glad to see the connection I’ve experienced be explored—“primal awareness.” The author shows us how to use AT to develop this special relationship to the outer world. Primal awareness has to do with a very fundamental response that we have (but often ignore) to the outer world. It is easiest to recognize when I give as an example, “the vibes we feel when we walk into a forest.” It is a direct experience of inner relatedness. Something about the forest “speaks to us.” It is not what we see, and it is not “feeling” in the sense of emotionality, but something we perceive nevertheless. In my work, I call it “seeing with heart awareness,” but regardless of the name we give to it, it is a dimension of consciousness that has the effect of uniting us with the world, rather than separating us as our senses do.The first half of the book gives the Autogenic Training part. He has expanded its applicability in many ways, going beyond generalized healing to working with the subtle energies of the body parts, and introduces color and other modalities to accomplish a wide variety of goals. The second half of the book he explains how to build upon the AT skills to develop your primal awareness of your surroundings and how to interact with it accordingly. This work takes us into many types of initiation rituals that allow us to form working alliances with nature. Reading his accounts of making a primal connection with the elements, water, air, fire, and water, I found that even imagining it as I read to be a very inspirational experience. If you have the time to spend alone exploring your consciousness, this book will keep you busy and entertained for several years! Think of the money you’ll save from not bothering to go to the movies!

Review

"Wrenching ... Her book should be read, not just as a warning of the very real dangers of the world, but also of the price to be paid when, in the name of religion, people forget humanity." —The Wall Street Journal"A sometimes-sweet, sometimes-harrowing memoir by a smart, passionate ultra-Orthodox girl. . . . engrossing and so thoughtfully written, and never mocks the traditions and values of a culture that few of us can fully comprehend." —People.com"Painfully raw." —Susannah Cahalan, New York Post"Gripping. . . . Readers will appreciate Vincent's uncensored honesty in sharing the horrors of her past." —The Washington Post "As thoughtful and heroic as it is gripping and tragic ... riveting and relatable ... [Vincent] familiarizes, rather than exoticizes, the life she's led ... The finest example of this sort of memoir yet." —Flavorwire"Visceral and uplifting." —The Daily Beast"Compulsively readable." —Bookpage"Never before has rebellion been so sweetly rendered. And never—not since the memoirs of Mary Karr—has the connection between self-destruction and family dysfunction been so tangible and clear. To know Vincent is to love her, to ache with her, to kick up your feet and let down your hair with her. This is the kind of extraordinary book you’ll finish in a day, and think about for months and years after." —Koren Zailckas, bestselling author of Smashed and Mother, Mother"Cut Me Loose brims with a girl’s longing, and shines with a woman’s insight. This book so courageously describes the forbidden: the great bind of being caught between desire and tradition. Vincent’s voice is as lyrical as it brave, as hopeful as it is honest. Leah Vincent magically depicts the labyrinth of what it means to be vulnerable, sexual and female." —Christa Parravani, author of Her"Gutsy, smart, and incredibly difficult to put down, Cut Me Loose chronicles Leah Vincent's perilous and poignant search for identity. As she grapples with profound loneliness and her dreams for the future, she ultimately arrives at a place filled with hope." —Wendy Lawless, author of Chanel Bonfire"Leah Vincent's memoir is a fascinating view into Yeshivish life that feels as familiar to the reader as her own life because, Orthodox or not, we all grew up wrestling against our forbidden desires, mundane and normal as they were. Vincent's story is full of despair, of longing, of trying to find a place for herself amid a world that doesn't allow girls to be their whole yearning selves. The reader cheers for her when she finally escapes the prisons built by the various institutions she grew up with." —Kerry Cohen, author of Loose Girl: A Memoir of Promiscuity"Leah Vincent's family abandoned her in the name of ultra-Orthodox Judaism. In her poignant memoir, she explores the imposed ignorance of her fundamentalist upbringing, the open wounds of her abandonment, her desperate, at times self-destructive, yearning for connection, and the self-discoveries that gave her the courage to shape her life and find her voice. The voice Vincent has claimed is unflinchingly honest and incisive. It has already begun to resound on behalf of others who struggle to escape abuse and oppression." —Anouk Markovits, author of I Am Forbidden"Vincent’s writing brims with tension, insight, and longing. This quickly paced book is not about sex, though sex is a part of the narrative. It’s ultimately a meditation on love and its myriad cruelties, as well as its eventual beauty and transcendence." —Margaux Fragoso, author of Tiger, Tiger"Leah Vincent shares a harrowing journey that will speak to all children fleeing intolerance, who struggle to be seen and accepted on their own terms." —Julie Metz, bestselling author of Perfection

I heard great things about this book and thought that it might be an interesting read. Without knowing specifics about the content, I bought the Kindle version of this book for myself. Remembering that my grandmother also loves biographies, I sent a paperback copy to my her at the same time. Well, I just finished reading the book last night. Had I known about the explicit sexual nature of the book, I wouldn’t have sent it to my dear old Granny. Too late now! I called her this morning to warn her. She’s pretty open minded, but still .... granddaughters usually stay clear of sending books with explicit sexual content to their grandmothers! I am not compaining about the book by any means, I am just warning those who might ordinarily shy away from such things. There is some pretty heavy stuff in this book. There are disturbing, upsetting sexual encounters that may not sit well with some readers. I’m not overly concerned about prudish people getting offended, but rape survivors may be triggered by some of the content of this book. Be warned.I finished this book in one sitting. I just couldn’t put it down! Ms. Vincent had me going through a roller coaster ride of emotions. I smiled when reading about her childhood innocence and naïveté, but further along in the book, I became angry at the people who hurt her and took advantage of her. I cried many tears when reading of her self destructive behavior and lack of self esteem. Like Leah, I was brought up in a strict, religious environment. Mine was not nearly as extreme as hers, but I was a sheltered child nonetheless. Her household was Jewish, mine was more or less Christian fundamentalist, but the results were the same .... naive children who became adults that got chewed up and spit out by the real world. While my experience wasn’t nearly as extreme as Ms. Vincent’s, I recognized that our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors were very similar in many instances. I saw a lot of myself in Ms. Vincent and she put into words all the shame and self-loathing I felt in my destructive teens and twenties. This book has a happy ending, but Ms. Vincent went through hell to get to where she is today. I admire her courage and her tenacity. All I could think about while reading this book was how I wish I could have somehow gone back in time, found this poor lonely girl living in Brooklyn, brought her tupperwares full of homemade food, and hugged her. I am angry that she had to go through her traumas all alone. At least I had friends and family that loved me unconditionally even though they didn’t approve of my behaviors. I am so glad Ms. Vincent was able to overcome her terrible circumstances and become a successful, educated, loved, and appreciated human being! Unfortunately, things don’t always work out so well for other young people who are left to fend for themselves when they don’t adhere to the strict rules of their religious upbringing.

After reading the negative reviews, I had to read this book and judge for myself. I am in general reluctant to share details of my own life online, but the misrepresentations of Ms Vincent as a liar and even that she is mentally unstable (from one reviewer who claims to know her family) are without foundation. I feel I must stand up for the truth as I see it. And Ms Vincent speaks the truth.I read the entire book in a single sitting - it is extremely well-written and it is fascinating, helping the reader understand the thinking of someone who has lost their family and identity undertaking self-destructive behaviours. It became very painful to read - especially how she was taken advantage of by men and had no idea how to interact with them - because it is a deeply authentic account. How do I know? Because I had the same Yeshivish upbringing as Leah's. Everything from the small details and philosophy of her upbringing is true. There is no embellishment. With the important qualifier that in every community there is variation and that not all families are like Leah's, the fact is that many are. So while Leah's upbringing does not tar the entire ultra Orthodox community, it is also a valid account of her own experience for her own family and life, and her experience is representative of many ultra Orthodox people's experiences. Many ultra-Orthodox Jewish parents would have reacted with shunning at a female teenager's natural baby steps toward developing their own identity, like asserting things like wanting to go to college, and wearing a tight sweater. The slightest deviation from draconian modesty rules can make a girl the equivalent of a prostitute in this black and white world where there is only one path to God. Every move of a young woman is watched to class her as pious, or as a 'rebel', which is called 'prost' (which means what it sounds like). The goal is to make her a dutiful wife, willing to bear as many children as her body will handle in exchange for poverty, little real relationship with her husband, and to accept a position of inferiority to men (who are not in a much better position with their own lack of education and options).Punishments come down hard to nip deviations from the path in the bud; if they are not successful and the girl commits more 'infractions' that would be considered downright cute in normal society, banishment occurs because a teenager's reputation, once damaged, is lost forever, no matter her youth. She can rarely make a good marriage if she was a 'rebel' as Leah was by putting on an attractive sweater.Worse, her behaviour is deemed to cause 'shame' to the family and ruin the marriage chances of her siblings and cousins, so she must be cut off before she can 'worsen' and damn the entire family with her grave sins of writing letters to another teenager or expressing a desire for an education. Boys, however, are given much more freedom and are allowed to rehabilitate themselves. This certainly brings to mind attitudes of very traditional Muslim families, who severely punish their daughters for any perceived breach of chastity as bringing 'shame' on the entire family. It is not a Western mentality, and it takes some getting used to.The racism and the attitude toward non-Jewish people, especially Blacks, although I believe it has improved among the Yeshivish community, is accurately described especially for the time (15-20 years ago). So is the poverty, of material things, educational opportunities, and of time for children from parents, with the father constantly away on religious duties (including study and prayer even if the father is not a rabbi) and the mother keeping house with many children with no support from the husband. Boys get much more of their father's time than girls do, because they go to synagogue with him and learn Jewish law and Talmud with him in the men-only community study hall; girls are forbidden from being educated in Talmud. A desire to study it marks a woman as rebellious. Therefore, given fathers' lack of investment in time and education in daughters, in many ultra-Orthodox families the emotional relationship between a father and a daughter, especially when she grows up, is an extremely watered down version of a normal father-daughter relationship. There is also no open affection between parents, including physical affection that others can see, including even little things like holding hands and the slightest of loving touches. Open displays of affection, including in front of one's own children, are regarded as highly immodest in this ascetic lifestyle. The life is very functional: taking care of children, work, running a household, and adhering to myriad religious rules that pervade everyday life and take up substantial amounts of time.In this world, children do not belong to themselves but to God, their parents and their community, and there is no such thing as simply giving a child the best education letting them make up their own minds as to what they want to be so long as they are ethical people. The child is educated to be an ultra Orthodox adult - a copy of their parents - and is given no education to allow them to be anything else. All other forms of oppression flow from this: you are not your own person. You have no right to have your own choices respected.Leaving - although it is the only option for many people who need to be honest with themselves - is increasingly traumatic the more religious one's family is. One can lose one's entire family, and one is dumped out into the world with no skills, no money, and no identity. In other words: there is no such thing as unconditional love. Can you imagine how it would be if your entire family - everyone you loved, invested in and thought you could count on forever - would cast you out because of a private choice you made for your own life that had nothing to do with your love for them? The effect on most people is devastating. Especially with the financial hardships that come along with this (which mean a whole slew of hardships), people understandably lose their sense of self and self-esteem. Some take their lives. Don't judge until you've walked that mile in another person's moccasins. One commenter has said that Leah should have been happy to go to an ultra-Orthodox women's 'secular' college. Sure, if she wanted a substandard education with very limited choices as to career (limited to 'female' professions like speech therapy), and no rigour. That commenter seems to have little appreciation of the value of the Harvard education Leah strove to get instead.Fortunately, with the increasing use of the Internet, the ultra-Orthodox (frum) community has become more open, although this is still a work in progress. Leah's struggles happened a decade and a half ago, and the Internet (with communication among religious people through the blogosphere and other democratic forms of commentary) has only really started making inroads in the last 5 years or so. At the same time, there are well-attended rallies against the use of the Internet in these communities, because of its power to educate people to make up their own minds. Those who criticise this book seem to fall into roughly two categories. There are the apologists, who want to discredit Ms Vincent, degrade her and attack her pain, because they feel her book is embarrassing to the ultra Orthodox community or Judaism as a whole. Some of these are Orthodox or ultra Orthodox people themselves, made plain by their demanding to know why she couldn't stay Orthodox instead of ultra-Orthodox: a common attitude that shows the writer's religious certainty that they know what God wants. It's an attitude that shuts down all rational debate: people can speak only for themselves. A theological discussion, if one is desired, should be respectful. At any rate, people should accept that ultra Orthodox culture has its flaws like any other culture - instead of pretending it is perfect because it is God's right way, and the way forward to change is by books like these that ventilate issues for discussion. I trust people reading this book who are not Jewish are rational and realise it does not represent all of Judaism, just as a book on an oppressive aspect of fundamentalist Christianity does not represent Christianity as a whole, or denies positive things fundamentalist Christians do, like great acts of charity. The other camp are those who have no idea what this world is like, and what some of its teachings can do to a vulnerable young person's psyche. The frum girl thrown out in the world has less than a sixth grade education in real terms, and little confidence. She would be extremely naive in relationships. To those of you in this camp: Most of you have been reared with the privileges and freedoms others only dream of. You have received an education that helps you navigate the real world and has given you incredible options. Denial of education and real experience in the world stunts a person's development. Leah's experience is not that much different from an immigrant child's from a very different culture. It's hard to put ourselves in another person's headspace, but image yourself as a small child going out into a completely alien world and not understanding what people in it mean, what the rules are and what the governing philosophies are.For anyone who actually reads the book with an unvarnished, plain attitude: the book stands on its own merits. For now, bravo to Leah: you are a great success. A master's from Harvard KSG no less. I'm sure we'll hear wonderful things from you.As a final note: a number of fundamentalist religions have the same features as I've written above, and more. It is amazing to those who leave to realise how common these control methods are when they finally obtain information about the world outside their group. At the very pointy end of things, a community is simply a cult. These groups are called "high demand organisations". Katie Couric interviewed Leah along with women who had left the FLDS polygamist Mormon community and the daughter of a Westboro Baptist Church leader, and the similarities of the groups' beliefs are no coincidence. These are just a sampling of fundamentalist interpretations of religion: Muslims in fundamentalist communities face similar lives:Poverty. Denial of education from toddlerhood so people don't know what other options exist in life. Tightly controlled information within the group, including controlling what books, newspapers, magazines, phones, films and computers people can buy. No TV. Shaming and strong moral condemnation of even slight deviations from the very strict codes of practice in the group. Girls taught from a very young age (2-3) that their primary role in life is to be wives and mothers. Young marriage and no contraception so a young woman is trapped even if she wants to leave: The husband gets the kids in the event of divorce, 1800s style. Women providing enormous economic (but unpaid) benefits bearing children, running households. Women dressed in dowdy clothes and denying them a sense of individual identity. Individualism denounced as apostasy. Women covering hair or wearing them in girlish styles. Women treated like children compared to men. Strict gender roles: with powerful and lucrative jobs and positions overwhelmingly in the hands of men. Male-only clergy. And, importantly, so that people buy into this impoverished lifestyle that robs them of their potential in life: 1) the teaching that the followers are living the 'hard' life God wants to test them with so that they'll go to heaven, so their suffering is worthwhile; 2) the specific religious philosophy and rules of that group is ancient and unchanging from time immemorial; 3) the specific religious philosophy and rules of the group is the **only way** to salvation; and 4) all those outside the group are degenerate, disapproved of by God, unholy and crude, including in intelligence. Racism and bigotry is rife, but it serves the purpose of making the 'in-crowd' feel superior and special. After all, if other people were just as loved and valued by God even if they have a very different life, why not live their much less demanding and happy life?Ms Vincent has seen past this crap. She has gone on a journey that proves that she obtains her feeling of being special as all of us should: through education, and finding our unique calling in life that serves others. We all have awesome creative gifts to make this world a better place. We are all special. If that's not what's meant by the verse in Genesis that says that all people are created in the image of God, I don't know what is.Fundamentalist religion takes away the wonder of life and replaces it with a poor substitute, like an abusive relationship. It's important to see it for what it is. It's not valid. It's not loving. And it's not life-affirming. Fundamentalists have more in common with each other than other adherents of religion: so that moderate Jews, Christians and Muslims have more in common with each other than they do with fundamentalists of their own religion. Why the world has moved toward fundamentalism in the last 30-40 years is an important discussion to have. Please comment :)

This book was an absolutely fascinating look at growing up in an ultra orthodox household. Like many other closed religious communities, views of the inside out are hard to find. Of course this represents one person's experience, but the yearning to reconnect early in the book makes it all the more believable. Leah Vincent grew up in a family that was loving when she colored inside the lines. As soon as she made a misstep that love was withdrawn. Parts of Vincent's life were certainly extreme, such as going from a very religious chaste young woman to one that hung out on basketball courts and bedded near strangers. While a true story, it almost feels like we are missing some even more crucial element than the family disconnection. All in all, however, an interesting and worthwhile read. As other reviewers warn, the book contains explicit content.

Leah Vincent lets us in on a life of loneliness that is almost beyond description. What is hard for me to understand is why at leaving a cult like religion does one seem almost always to spiral down? The same thing goes on with the Amish. There is more to learn out there than loose sex, and filth. What of art museums and music, and beauty? I am not unsympathetic with her circumstance, and indeed have experienced similar. But why not choose exposure to better things? The book needed some proof reading in terms of grammar Highly readible, but having finished, I recycled the book in paper recycling rather than pass it on. In some ways It was too lewd to pass on to another reader.Still, I certainly lost my taste for teachers like her father, and I believe every word about her circumstances. Leah's family wasted her!
