This is not my usual book to read. We chose it in book club, but I loved it. Great writing and really made me think about how we treat each other as human beings. Also gave me more empathy for the troubled and bullied kids out there. Cried for the last 3 or 4 chapters. It is truly a heart wrenching story (situation) for all those involved. I certainly re-evaluated some of my opinions of people and reminded me not to judge others when I don't know all the facts. This was a book I could not put down!

I've read this novel twice. Once a few years ago and again recently for a book club. This novel is timely and very well written.I am in my late 60's and glad that my childrearing days are well behind me. Parenting is very challenging, especially the teenage years. Although people always look to the parents when a child exhibits antisocial & troublesome behaviors but while the parents may be the primary caregivers the child comes in contact with many people who help shape their personalities. This book examines every aspect of Peter's life experiences and leaves us to decide which influences contributed to his attitudes.

As an avid reader and fan of Ms.Picoult's stories, I recommend this story of a family that could be your neighbor or family. A regular couple living in ANYTOWN, USA, Dad,a firefighter, a stay-at-home Mom and 3 kids....a boy, and two girls. However, the 2nd child, a girl is very ill and needs constant medical care, hospitalization and surgery. Their lives revolve around this child and story takes place over a few years. No Spoiler here. Ms. Picoult draws us in to their lives and all the drama it entails.

I'm pretty shocked that parents had a problem with this book being assigned to high school students. It's completely relevant to today's youth. What's surprising about the attempt to ban this book was that parents had a problem with the sex scenes, not the violence. Sure, a kid shoots other kids and that's no problem but even the mere mention of sexually active high school students sends parents into a fit? Grow up. There are much larger issues in this book, as in life, and sex doesn't always have to be the first thing on everyone's mind. Come on adults--let's set a better example of our kids. Read this book to remember what high school was like and see it through your kid's eyes. Talk to them about bullying, and about sex, instead of trying to ban a book that can easily open the conversation.

Three stars for Ms. Picoult's courage to write on such a difficult subject, and for her mostly appropriate portrayal of the various age-groups and the genders. Minus two for what came across as sometimes a juvenile writing style (her book Plain Truth was much better imho), and for the cutoff at the end that left too much gap between what occurred throughout the story and the abrupt ending she left hanging for some of the characters. She tried to tie it all up in the final chapter, but it did not answer many questions, nor did it do justice to the buildup during the story.

Wow! What insight into the minds of those who are so relentlessly victimized that they finally snap and become victimizers. I've worked with adult clients who say, based on their own experiences of being constantly bullied throughout school, that the victims of mass school shootings deserve it. I don't agree, of course, but I understand the rage. Having worked in the public school system, I can guarantee you that the preferred method of dealing with bullying is to ignore it. We cannot let this continue. Bullying destroys the self-esteem of people for many, many years, if not a lifetime. I was bullied throughout elementary school and, thank God, my parents moved so I could get a fresh start where I was accepted and even enjoyed a certain level of popularity ... so it isn't always the "victim's fault" that they are picked on. If your child is bullied and your school won't deal with it, (1) turn them into their superintendent, (2) turn them into your state's education agency, (3) insist that the district allow your child to change schools, (4) if you must, move, (5) arrange for QUALITY home school, (6) pay for private school, (7) get your child counseling with a counselor who enjoys playing with younger kids or talking to older kids and teens, but DO SOMETHING because school bullying causes lifelong self-esteem issues that affect academic success, careers, and whether or not your child becomes a bully or marries one.

Being a retired teacher, I was drawn to this story. (I also really have enjoyed reading many Jodi Picoult stories). Too many children are bullied in today's world. Too many children try to hide their soft, quiet personalities just to try and blend in with those who bully others. Jodi describes the world those "picked on kids" live in and she does it with her emotionally charged writing style. Well done!

This has to be one of the thickest books on my shelf but I read it in a couple of days. Couldn’t put it down. Jodi takes a shot at a real life headline story and manages to pull her audience into this powerful thought provoking scenario which makes you second guess yourself and question your judgement. She brings front and center, an issue (school shooting) relevant in our society today. She makes you empathize with the villain. And she teaches you a powerful lesson, that there’s more to a story beyond its headlines. I couldn’t put the book down until i read the last line. She conjures human emotion like no other author. She motivates you to step outside your preconceived notions and judge things, people, situations, for what they really are. You should read this book as a parent, as a teen, as an adult or as an educator.

I bought this for my 7 y/o nephew who really likes dinosaurs. It is age appropriate, maybe a little advanced for some 7 y/o, but they can grow into it & develop their reading skills which is always a plus. It is a fairly large, thin book & easy for them handle. It has large pictures. Some people complained about no correct pronunciations, but they are listed in the back of the book. I firmly believe in children learning to read & comprehend well. I always told my young daughters when they were small (20-25 years ago) that I would not always buy them a toy that they wanted, but that I would always buy them a book that they wanted! They are both great readers. One is now a successful attorney & the other is an administrative assistant for a non-profit agency. Being able to read fast & comprehend well is an invaluable asset in life. I give my small nephews toys for presents on birthdays, etc., but I always give them a book also. I was somewhat irritated when his mother made a smart remark that now she was going to have to read to him every night. I just bit my tongue since it was my sister's daughter who lacks success in life. Case made for the importance of reading!

This was a hit with my 9 year old nephew. I thought that he may think the book is too childish because it's a huge l, thin book. The pictures are stunning and the information is easy for him to understand. He loves it so I love it!

My son loves dinosaurs so I stumbled on to this book! And wow I was pleasantly surprised! It’s fantastic. The cover is so colorful, shiny, realistic and just great! Catches you attention immediately! The book is big in size so the pictures are big and very detailed. With pictures that will excite you and any kid. The text is good size so it’s pretty visible and easy to read with understandable words for smaller kids. My son loved this book at 6 years old. It’s hardcover and it’s great quality. So I would really recommend this book for any kids or adult. You don’t even need to love dinosaurs, because this book will capture your attention for hours!

Bought this for my 5 yr old grandson who loves dinosaurs. What a surprise when it arrived. The cover is beautiful. The dinosaur is iridescent. The pictures of the dinosaurs are great. The scientific names are hard to pronounce, but there is a glossary and beside each name is a pronunciation of the species. Beautifully illustrated book.

Really large book with bright, big pictures and short descriptions. Read this myself when the 5 year old wasn’t even around.

Scary cover, just was a GREAT GIFT for a dinoasaur fan of a grandson for Christmas!!! Great renditions and easy to read, highly recommend it!

This book is a must read for any and all parents attempting to raise children in a Christian environment. Dr. Mamalakis is the type of guy who can throw down impressive amounts of knowledge both in the realm of psychology and theology (doctorate and MDiv, respectfully), but does not beat the reader over the head with his vast expertise, opting instead to write a book that is easily understood by all.My one caveat to the book is not that it has a short-coming (it doesn't), but rather that it is best understood if read in conjunction with another work he draws from: "Parenting From the Inside Out" by Dr. Daniel J. Siegel and Mary Hartzell. Read these two together and you will gain a truly profound understanding of parenting -- both from a scientific and theological perspective -- that will be humbling, rewarding, and (hopefully) life-changing.I am happy to give as many stars as possible to this book because it was truly a great read and very helpful. Thank you, Dr. Mamalakis.

Phenomenal parenting book. My sons are 2.5 and 6 months and I am so glad I am reading this now (although it would be appropriate for parents with kids of any age! A few of the highlights I got from it were the importance to when parenting be calm, kind, firm, and consistent. Also I liked how it talks a lot about how parenting is not intended to force your child into your mold but rather to help them grow well. So so much more in this than just that. My husband and I honestly dont read a lot but both of us found this book incredibly easy to read and flows very well. A definite must read for parents who want to raise kids even if you are not Orthodox.

The wisdom and simplicity of this book blow me away. Dr. Mamalakis is not only a deep thinker, but an exceptional writer, with a seemingly effortless perfection in writing technique (Strunk & White could do no better) and a winning, engaging style. The personal examples he gives so frequently from his own parenting struggles are honest, transparent, and real. They illustrate his points with a clarity I cannot recall experiencing, ever, in the many parenting books I have read over the last two decades. How I wish I had had this book when my kids were young! Be warned, though: This is not a book about managing children. This is a book about changing hearts, growing characters, and creating the desire to do right — and not just the children's. It is a book about creating a family, not just about getting your kids to behave (though it definitely does that too, even with my teens). Okay, yes, I've also read other books about creating a family...but this one is different. It is doable. It is real. I wish I could give it six stars.

Excellent, well-written, thoughtful, and timely. an approach to "gentle parenting" with a spiritual center

Excellent. Many books in this genre tend to be a bit redundant and somehow unsatisfying. Mamalakis is poignant, clear, deeply thoughtful, and very practical.

This author knows kids. He had 7. So he gets that parents mess up and are overwhelmed. He's got strategies for loving your kids while setting boundaries and teaching them to be people. This is a wonderful and useful parenting book.

I'm a teacher and a parent and see the benefits and wisdom of raising a child this way and the consequences and failures of not doing so. This book taught me a lot I hadn't placed my fingers on and reminded (renewed my mind) with other good and novel points buried in my subconscious. Even as an educated and informed person, I was in a cave and feel much better equipped and inspired.

I am SO glad I bought this. Colu Henry is a truly gifted cook and this is definitely my kind of recipe collection. The recipes are well-written and they work. It is a great range of spirited pasta dishes that are the kind I and my family like to fix and eat. I have already tried quite a few...Tuscan Kale Caesar Pasta, Scallops Sungolds and a Mess of Herbs, Frutti di Mare with Squid Ink Pasta, Pasta with Pickled Peppers, both pasta with escarole recipes, Roasted Cauliflower with Cavatappi, Baccala and Green Olive Pasta with Olives, and Papparadelle with Duck Confit Olives and Raisins: these are all splendid, absolutely splended, and just a fraction of the greatness that lies between the book covers. Lemony Spaghetti is another.... These are unpretentiously sophisticated but straightforward recipes with a Neapolitan, Southern Italian spirit. A great mix of classic (Cacio e Pepe) and her own very capable creative spins (Fettucine with Crab and Jalapenos). The list of excellent recipes just goes on and on....it is one of the few cookbooks the I really want to cook my way through. Throughout she makes goid suggestions for adapting recipes to meatless. Great use of olives, capers, walnuts, greens and other veggies in pastas...but then, I am a sucker for pasta with walnuts and veggies in varied combos so that won me over. The production value of the booked is truly top quality, with excellent paper stock and binding, beautiful graphics and lay out, excellent photos of the food and of inspiring scenery. The head notes for all the recipes are excellent and very helpful.Disclaimer, of sorts: this cookbook may not be for everyone, but please, don't blame the cookbook or its author. If escarole, radicchio, broccoli rabe are not your thing, maybe it's not for you (but if they are, you will love this.) Some recipes include ingredients - like nduja, duck confit, baccala, pickled Italian hot peppers (not pepperoncini), ramps - that can be hard to find in some areas so if that is an issue for you...there are plenty of other recipes, but maybe this is not for you (these things are common to our pantry so I am thrilled to work with those recipes...). The style of these recipes (like pasta with walnuts and greens and more...) may not work for some families or folks who are well set within their own particular comfort zone - so maybe not for you. This cookbook is boldly just what it is...the recipes are easy (to me), but it is definitely not "Pasta 101" or Rachel Ray's 30 Minute Weeknight Meals" ... It definitely can call for some ingredients that many people may not have on hand. So good to consider all this when deciding if this is a good fit for you.But for me... I am crazy about this cookbook and look forward to cooking more of the excellent recipes. A welcome, working addition to my, well, huge, cookbook library. Enjoy!

I saw Back Pocket Pasta on Food 52 when the envelope was opened by staff to expose the cover of the book and the beautiful photo's inside. If you love pasta, you will love this book. The main idea of the book is to provide easy meals for weeknights when you are tired or have no idea what to make for supper. The recipes are printed on one page, with a beautiful photo of the dish prepared alongside. The ingredients are easily purchased in the grocery store and with a well stocked pantry, you are on your way to preparing easy, lovely meals during the week. I am looking forward to making a number of Colu Henry's dishes such as Orecchiette with fresh corn and burrata and Crab Fra Diavolo to name just a few. Verified Purchase.

Here is the thing about this cookbook: it is so worth the effort. My wife and I have had the book for a short time but we use it all the time because the recipes require minimal effort and maximal eating experiences. Normally people make babies to music. We are gonna make a baby while enjoying one of these masterful recipes (and music). Buy this. You will not be disappointed. Not to mention it is very veggie/pescatarian friendly but also brings the ruckus when it comes to meat if you're in to that kind of thing.

In love with this cookbook. The recipes are beautifully written and represented beautifully through their pictures. I enjoyed hearing Colu’s voice through her writing. I have really enjoyed everything I have made from the book. Aglio e olio, Cacio e pepe, pasta puttanesca, her basic tomato sauce, her Alfredo recipe is also great and somehow feels lite. Most of the recipe says in this book require ingredients that I always have on hand/ or they are at least very easy to get ahold of. They are truly recipes you can reach into your “back pocket” for. After only making a couple times I have all of the above recipes memorized. Easy easy easy! Only problem is now I want to eat pasta every night hahah.

My resolution for 2017 was to cook at home more often. This makes it so easy! Colu Henry has a list of ingredients to keep stocked in your pantry so that when you want to make a new recipe, you only need to pick up a couple things from store (if anything). Most of the recipes are vegetarian. I've already made 5 or 6 of these recipes (and most of those more than once!) since I bought the cookbook. It is my new weeknight go-to. And the photography is just stunning.A no-brainer if you like to cook and eat!

Wonderful book! The photographs are fabulous and the easy, tasty recipes are GREAT. These family recipes seem too easy to be perfect...yet that is exactly what they are!! I'm using a lot of the sauces on fish and chicken as our family is low carb...and the sauces are perfect for that too.The book reads like you are talking with a friend. Little hints here and there; a conversation about using the pasta boiling water or which tomatoes to use seems like Colu Henry is right there with you in the kitchen.There's wine, pantry and cocktail advice too!! That AND these recipes!! Home run!

Enjoyed reading the book as well as I plan to make many of the recipes. Photos are beautiful! I have been in the process of donating cookbooks and determined not to buy any more..... till this one. I'm glad I changed my position just this once.

Smart, simple, comprehensive, and well organized with spot-on directions and crisp illustrations. Ms. Henri's book has quickly become my go-to kitchen asset during weekly family meals and a favorite gift to friends and family that love cooking (and eating!) pasta. The downside is they will know how simple it can be to yield delicious results but this one is too good not to share. I plan check out her favorite spots for ingredients she mentions during my weekly NYC trips. Thank you, Colu!

This book is such a cool way for kids to learn about the Human body. We love that you get a true 'inside-out' view of every body part. This has been so good for my home school library stash. This type of book keeps your child engaged. Looking forward to purchasing other titles. Perfect for the holidays or birthdays.

SO interesting! My little 8 year old biologist is taken with this book which allows him to explore his young understand of the human bosy and how it works. Strongly recommend!

I have read a few books now in this series and they are excellent.The facts are great, the images and illustrations are spot on and they are a fun and enjoyable learning resource - 5 stars
